Niklas Luhmanns Systemtheorie und das Fernsehen

    No full text
(...)  EnglischAttempting to understand the medium "television" theoretically the author rejects all respective theories (among others, those made by Adorno and Enzensberger). Referring to the theory of the socio~ogist Niklas Luhmann he evolves the thesis that television has repercussions on the evolutionary effects which created television and intensifies them in turn. He considers it more important to "know" about basic conditions of human life and their interdependencies than to "understand" complex facts, which is demanded by N. Postman. To give basic information is only one task among many others which television has to accomplish. To explain interdependencies, however, is declared to be the leading principle.

    Fragile Pluralism

This essay first appeared in German in Magdalena Tzaneva, ed. Nachtflug der Eule: 150 Stimmen zum Werk von Niklas Luhmann. Gedenkbuch zum 15. Todestag von Niklas Luhmann (8. Dezember 1927 Lüneburg – 6. November 1998 Oerlinghausen). Berlin: LiDi EuropEdition (2013), 73–100. A shorter version of the essay was published in Hans-Georg Soeffner, and Thea D. Boldt, eds. Fragiler Pluralismus, Wiesbaden: VS Springer (2014), 207–24. The present translation for Entangled Religions – Interdisciplinary Journal for the Study of Religious Contact and Transfer is by Nicola Morris.   The article describes the emergence of pluralism within the process of globalization and the impact of this development upon individuals communication and the definitions of the ‘self’ and the ‘Other’. The author illustrates the pitfalls of the human tendency to view the world from an ethnocentric perspective and with the corresponding attitude. He argues that in ‘open societies’, successful citizens will be capable of recognising and articulating distinctions between individuals, as well as between groups, beliefs, lifestyles and attitudes. These citizens must also be aware and capable of adapting for their purposes the full repertoire of language games and role games in their social world, in order to perceive and utilise comprehensive systems such as frameworks for cooperation. These skills will help them implement ‘maxims of communication’ and ‘existential hypotheses’

Observing observers in social systems theory.: an interview with Hans-Georg Moeller

    No full text
On November 4th, 2019, Hans-Georg  Moeller delivered a presentation on  systems theory at the Law School of  the University of São Paulo and was  interviewed about Niklas Luhmann’s  theory of society, with emphasis on issues such as law, politics, and the  history of philosophy. Professor Moeller is the author of important books such as Luhmann explained: From souls to systems (Moeller, 2006) and The radical Luhmann (Moeller, 2011), the latter also translated to Japanese and Italian. He also works on Chinese philosophy and is currently Full Professor at the Department of Philosophy and Religious Studies in the Faculty of Arts and Humanities of the University of Macau, China. Throughout the interview, professor Moeller situated Luhmann in the philosophical tradition of German idealism and presented the shift to second-order observation as a crucial aspect of contemporary society, in  religion and politics, science, economy and law. The interview was conducted partly in writing and partly in the form of a recorded and transcribed debate. This text presents an interview with Hans-Georg Moeller, a renowned researcher in the field of social systems theory. During the conversation, he points out some of the main aspects of the epistemological ruptures brought about to social theory by Niklas Luhmann\u27s radical constructivist approach. One of the phenomena that this theory helps to detect is the turning of contemporary society to second-order observation: each social system and even the social representation of each person are built by instances of observation of observations, such as rankings and profiles. This is a new way of producing communication, the basic element of society

The original German version of that talk was published in Jenseits der Utopie : Theoriekritik der Gegenwart / ed. by Stefan Müller-Doohm. - Frankfurt : Suhrkamp, 1991, S. 15-47: "Soziologie und Zeitdiagnose: oder: Die Moderne im Selbstbezug" s.a. http://publikationen.ub.uni-frankfurt.de/volltexte/2007/3906

Keepers of Law and Order or Managers of Mobility?

    No full text
This doctoral thesis examines organizational development in public management, using the example of a police department as a basis. It follows the theory of autopoietic social systems according to Niklas Luhmann and establishes what can be observed from a social science point of view within two subsystems of this public management organization (police authority and police clients) and what consequences may result from this. The dissertation consistently follows Luhmanns circular way of thinking in which every term used precludes knowledge of the following terms. The author adopts a critical stance towards Luhmann and persists on one central point where everything converges: an autopoietic social system is regarded as a social system which develops new communication elements from the communications of which it already consists

This is paper is a hermeneutical approach to Peter Middelkoop’s Bible translation in West Timor, East Nusa Tenggara. By way of Gadamer’s hermeneutical thought, the author deduced that evangelism is always impacting either the mission activities or the site of mission. Since any achievement of evangelism, which implicated the local languages is not a sole accomplishment of mission institutions, such as Netherland Zending Genotschaf (NZG), but an outcome of the engagement between the missionaries and the existing culture
