Laboratório de Artes na Montanha – Graça Morais: um projeto em construção
A pintora portuguesa Graça Morais (n. 1948) partiu de uma pequena aldeia transmontana, o Vieiro, para o mundo e encontrando o que no mundo é comum ao Vieiro, trabalhou também o que lhe é distinto e, no que é a prorrogativa da arte e da ciência, descobriu e criou novos mundos. A sua obra, resultante de mais de 40 anos de atividade, tem a virtude de estabelecer uma relação que une o local ao global e o global ao local numa dinâmica que envolve o observador e o questiona. Partindo da obra tutelar da pintora Graça Morais, o Instituto Politécnico de Bragança criou em 2018 o Laboratório de Artes na Montanha – Graça Morais, estrutura de investigação resultante de uma parceria estratégica com a Câmara Municipal de Bragança/Centro de Arte Contemporânea Graça Morais, o Instituto de História da Arte da Faculdade de Ciências Sociais e Humanas da Universidade Nova de Lisboa, a Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia, e a própria pintora. Neste breve artigo fazemos o enquadramento deste novo projeto que, unindo arte e ciência, visa potenciar a atividade formativa, promover a criação artística e dinamizar processos de documentação, investigação e disseminação de resultados, contribuindo para tornar Bragança e o território envolvente em novas referências de descentralização científica e cultural e, simultaneamente, uma plataforma de contacto com todo o mundo.The Portuguese painter Graça Morais (b. 1948) is the author of an extensive work which reflects both her origins – a small rural village in Northeast Portugal – and her experience in a cosmopolitan and constantly changing world. Her paintings not only evoke memories, but also describe contemporary events, thus intersecting the local and the global, the past and the present, in a dynamic approach that involves and questions the observer – and, through him, all humankind. Inspired by the tutelary work of the painter Graça Morais and her continuous activity over the last 40 years, the Instituto Politécnico de Bragança (Polytechnic Institute of Bragança) has recently created the Laboratório de Artes na Montanha – Graça Morais (Laboratory Arts in the Mountain – Graça Morais), a research structure that results from a strategic partnership between the Câmara Municipal de Bragança (Municipality of Bragança)/Centro de Arte Contemporânea Graça Morais (Contemporary Art Centre Graça Morais), the Instituto de História da Arte of the Faculdade de Ciências Sociais e Humanas, Universidade Nova de Lisboa, the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology, and the painter herself. In this short article, we present the framework of this project which, promoting and disseminating scientific and artistic research and creation, formative activities and innovative academic training, aiming to convert Bragança and its surroundings in a decentralized hub of cultural events and, at the same time, a contact platform with the whole world
Watering the Semiarid: Designing a Wetness Retention Landscape in Jaguaribara, Brazil
Since the earliest records, the Brazilian semiarid, in the northeast of the country, has suffered from water scarcity and recurrent droughts. To mitigate the effects of high variability and low availability of water in the region, governments have been investing, since the 1960s, in the construction of dams to stop the loss of water to the ocean, and water channels, to quickly distribute the stored water to places of greatest demand. Of the 10 states in the Brazilian seminary, the one with the largest amount of waterworks is Ceará, where the largest reservoir in Latin America is also found, Castanhão, built in the middle third of the Jaguaribe river, whose basin drains 50% of the state’s territory. The construction of the Castanhão dam demanded, among other actions, the resettlement of the urban centre of the city Jaguaribara, which had 2/3 of its territory flooded to make way for stored water.The initial study showed the unsustainability of the regional water system and a series of problems regarding the use and availability of water in Jaguaribara. Such observation aroused the hypothesis that local water management could be improved by combining engineering and nature-base solutions, considering the inhabitants of Jaguaribara and the unique biome of Brazilian semiarid, the Caatinga. Therefore, the present work adopts the research through design strategy (RTD) and starts from the analysis of the wetness Ceará and Jaguaribara, to propose design strategies that aim to establish a wetness retention landscape in Jaguaribara - also stretching these ideas at a larger scale. As result, the design strategies were evaluated for their effectiveness in terms of creating an autonomous and drought-resilient community, being classified into seven types, according to their specific objectives and areas of implementation.For citations, please use: Veras Morais, M. Transductions: a global experiment in digital curation
The ebook “Transductions” portraits the Renata Lemos Morais experience as a curator, which she describes as a journey of aesthetic serendipity. It is the textual offspring of Transductions #18, a pop-up exhibition that made part of the Pause Festival of Digital Culture in Melbourne, in 2015.
Through the fortuitous and elusive encounters of digital curation, Renata Lemos Morais has been exploring the refracted images of her own personal sense of aesthetics mirrored in the expansive lens of the digital mesh. Transductions#18 was conceptualised out of the creative urge to manifest this process within a physical space.
According to the author, “the exhibition was about living the questions not only in the now, but also about enacting a living experiment with some of the most important questions of our now, by tapping into the continuous mesh of virtuality and physicality which is interspersed in the chaos and complexity of contemporary life”
PRECEITOS MORAIS PARA UMA VIDA MODERADA: O MATRIMÔNIO COMO ORDENAÇÃO DA SOCIEDADE NA CONCEPÇÃO PELAGIANA
The goal of this article is to argue the moral precepts exposed in the Friar Alvaro Pais work, about the state of perfection evangelical, that in the medieval society of the first half century XIV, was represented by virginity. That's why in this article, the author opted to reflect concerning about Galician friar's marriage conception. Besides the human, social and inherent juridical aspects to the marriage, the author seeks to understand the moral precepts specified by the clergy, for the moderation of the relative habits the marriage institution as society orderer. KEY WORDS: Precepts, moral, church, marriage.O objetivo deste artigo é discutir os preceitos morais expostos na obra de Frei Álvaro Pais, sobre o estado de perfeição evangélica, que, na sociedade medieval da primeira metade do século XIV, era representado pela virgindade. Finite element analysis of the ECT test on mode III interlaminar fracture of carbon-epoxy composite laminates
In this work a parametric study of the Edge Crack Torsion (ECT) specimen was performed
in order to maximize the mode III component (GIII) of the strain energy release rate for carbon-epoxy laminates.
A three-dimensional finite element analysis of the ECT test was conducted considering a
[90/0/(+45/-45)2/(-45/+45)2/0/90]S lay-up. The main objective was to define an adequate geometry to obtain an almost pure mode III at crack front. The geometrical parameters studied were specimen dimensions, distance between pins and size of the initial crack.
The numerical results demonstrated that the ratio between the specimen length and the initial crack length had a significant effect on the strain energy release rate distributions. In almost all of the tested
configurations, a mode II component occurred near the edges but it did not interfere significantly with the dominant mode III state.FCT - POCTI/EME/45573/200
Nascimento Morais Filho e o modernismo no Maranhão
A presente tese de doutorado consiste em examinar criticamente a obra poética e a trajetória literária do escritor maranhense Nascimento Morais Filho (1922-2009), ao mesmo tempo em que constrói, a partir de um resgate histórico e historiográfico, uma nova narrativa sobre o Modernismo no Maranhão, com enfoque na poesia. O referido autor inicia sua trajetória nas letras ao fundar, junto com vários jovens intelectuais, o grêmio literário Centro Cultural “Gonçalves Dias”, o qual buscava, em essência, movimentar a capital São Luís e trazer o brilho de outrora à Atenas Brasileira. A partir de 1945, Morais Filho torna-se um dos expoentes da estética modernista em seu Estado, que até aquele momento ainda não compreendia muito bem as inovações disruptivas desencadeadas vinte anos antes pela Semana de Arte Moderna. Propor uma nova narrativa do Modernismo no Maranhão significa pesquisar a própria história desse estado a fim de entender o atraso cultural que lhe foi imposto, bastante justificado por uma decadência econômica e por um ciclo político oligárquico. Por isso a investigação sobre como o Modernismo adentra o Maranhão e se consolida ali compreende o recorte temporal estabelecido entre 1936 e 1976, haja vista que é nesse período que se observam as mudanças em vários âmbitos da sociedade, as quais impulsionarão novas formas de pensar e de produzir literatura, em especial o gênero lírico, foco desta tese. Para compor o diálogo crítico direcionado à produção poética de cada período histórico e às análises dos poemas selecionados do poeta em questão, buscamos os pensamentos de Jean-Paul Sartre, Antonio Cândido, Carlos Felipe Moisés e Arlete Nogueira da Cruz. O trabalho está dividido em cinco partes, que correspondem aos cinco capítulos da tese. Na primeira parte resgatamos a vida e a obra de Nascimento Morais Filho, bem como sua recepção crítica, para que se note o tamanho de sua contribuição para a cultura maranhense. Na segunda, inicia-se a viagem rumo à história do Maranhão fundamentada, dali em diante, pelos estudos de Benedito Buzar, Mário Meirelles, Carlos de Lima, Eloy Coelho Netto e Rossini Corrêa, ao mesmo tempo em que comentamos a produção literária deste período. Na terceira, recontamos a trajetória do Centro Cultural “Gonçalves Dias”, demonstrando por meio de documentos históricos como se deu o início e o fim deste grêmio, além de examinar sua atuação e publicações. Na quarta, continuamos a perscrutar a história e a literatura maranhenses sem esquecer de analisar criticamente alguns poemas pertencentes a dois livros de Morais Filho: Clamor da Hora Presente (1955) e Azulejos (1963). Por fim, a quinta parte dedica-se a entender as conquistas modernistas no âmbito literário em consonância com as questões históricas pertinentes ao Maranhão, analisando também alguns poemas de Esfinge do Azul (1972), último livro autoral de Nascimento Morais FilhoThe present doctoral thesis consists of a critical examination of the poetic work and literary trajectory of Maranhão writer Nascimento Morais Filho (1922-2009), while at the same time building, based on a historical and historiographical rescue, a new narrative on Modernism in Maranhão, with a focus on poetry. The author began his career in letters when he founded, along with several young intellectuals, the literary group Centro Cultural Gonçalves Dias, which sought, in essence, to move the capital São Luís and bring the brilliance of yesteryear to the Brazilian Athens. In 1945, Morais Filho became one of the exponents of modernist aesthetics in his state, which until that moment still did not understand very well the disruptive innovations triggered twenty years earlier by the Week of Modern Art. Proposing a new narrative of Modernism in Maranhão means researching the very history of this state in order to understand the cultural backwardness that was imposed on it, quite justified by an economic decadence and by an oligarchic political cycle. For this reason, the investigation of how Modernism entered Maranhão and consolidated itself in the state covers the period between 1936 and 1976, since it is in this period that changes can be observed in various areas of society, which will drive new ways of thinking and producing literature, especially the lyrical genre, the focus of this thesis. To compose the critical dialog directed to the poetic production of each historical period and the analysis of the selected poems of the poet in question, we sought the thoughts of Jean-Paul Sartre, Antonio Cândido, Carlos Felipe Moisés and Arlete Nogueira da Cruz. The work is divided into five parts, which correspond to the five chapters of the thesis. In the first part we rescue the life and work of Nascimento Morais Filho, as well as his critical reception, in order to note the size of his contribution to the Maranhão culture. In the second part, we begin the journey into the history of Maranhão based, from then on, on the studies of Benedito Buzar, Mário Meirelles, Carlos de Lima, Eloy Coelho Netto and Rossini Corrêa, at the same time as we comment on the literary production of this period. In the third section, we recount the trajectory of the Centro Cultural "Gonçalves Dias", demonstrating by means of historical documents how the beginning and the end of this association took place, besides examining its activities and publications. In the fourth part, we continue to scrutinize the history and literature of Maranhão without forgetting to critically analyze some poems belonging to two books by Morais Filho: Clamor da Hora Presente (1955) and Azulejos (1963). A new data reduction scheme to obtain the mode II fracture properties of Pinus Pinaster wood
In this work a numerical study of the End Notched Flexure (ENF) specimen was performed
in order to obtain the mode II critical strain energy released rate (GIIc) of a Pinus pinaster wood in the RL crack propagation system. The analysis included interface finite elements and a progressive damage
model based on indirect use of Fracture Mechanics.
The difficulties in monitoring the crack length during an experimental ENF test and the inconvenience of performing separate tests in order to obtain the elastic properties are well known. To avoid these
problems, a new data reduction scheme based on the equivalent crack concept was proposed and validated. This new data reduction scheme, the Compliance-Based Beam Method (CBBM), does not require crack measurements during ENF tests and additional tests to obtain elastic properties.FCT - POCTI/EME/45573/200

This essay aims to scrutinize through critical analysis the sections which are part of the research-book Maria Firmina: fragmentos de uma vida, by the poet Nascimento Morais Filho, in order to show this researcher’s journey towards the discovery of the maranhense author Maria Firmina dos Reis’ life and works, who is the first female Brazilian novelist. We also take back the poet’s small biography to contextualize the discovery’s circumstances and to understand its developments until it reaches the book’s publishing per se.Este artigo dedica-se a perscrutar, por meio de uma análise crítica, as seções que compõem o livro-pesquisa Maria Firmina: fragmentos de uma vida, de autoria do poeta Nascimento Morais Filho, a fim de demonstrar a jornada deste pesquisador rumo à descoberta da vida e obra da autora maranhense Maria Firmina dos Reis, a primeira romancista da literatura brasileira.
