Tabula Rasa and Human Nature

No full text
It is widely believed that the philosophical concept of 'tabula rasa' originates with Locke's Essay Concerning Human Understanding and refers to a state in which a child is as formless as a blank slate. Given that both these beliefs are entirely false, this article will examine why they have endured from the eighteenth century to the present. Attending to the history of philosophy, psychology, psychiatry and feminist scholarship it will be shown how the image of the tabula rasa has been used to signify an originary state of formlessness, against which discourses on the true nature of the human being can differentiate their position. The tabula rasa has operated less as a substantive position than as a whipping post. However, it will be noted that innovations in psychological theory over the past decade have begun to undermine such narratives by rendering unintelligible the idea of an 'originary' state of human nature

Author: Rasa Muduraitė Title: Evaluation of Chemotherapy Effectiveness in Castration–Resistant Prostate Cancer Aim: to evaluate effectiveness of docetaxel chemotherapy in everyday clinical practice and compare the results with randomized clinical trials. Objectives: 1. Evaluate demographic data and disease characteristics among patients treated with docetaxel chemotherapy. 2. Evaluate overall and disease-specific survival. 3. Analyse used chemotherapy features. Methods: information was obtained from retrospectively analysed patients’ case histories. The start of first-line docetaxel chemotherapy was regarded as the diagnosis date of castration-resistant prostate cancer (CRPC). Time period from the start of chemotherapy until the death of patient or censoring (end of observation) date (02/08/2017) was used for overall survival (OS). Data were entered and evaluated using MSO Excel 2007 and SPSS 22.4 programmes. OS was calculated using Kaplan-Meyer method, hazard ratio was evaluated using Cox regression. Participants: 68 patients that had been treated during 2008-2016 period because of metastasized CRPC and have been administered first-line docetaxel chemotherapy. Results: median age of patients was 70 years. Median of time from prostate cancer diagnosis date to CRPC development was 50.5 mos. Median number of applied docetaxel cycles was 8 (range 1-10). Progression-free survival (PFS) was 8.5 months (median), overall and cancer-specific survival - 20 months (95% CI 13.7 – 26.3). The one-year survival rate was 65%, 3-year – 24%. It was found that patients, which received second-line systemic cancer specific treatment, had an 84% lower hazard death ratio (hazard ratio (HR) 0.16; 95% CI 0.07 – 0.41) in comparison to patients that did not receive second-line treatment (p<0.001). Second line treatment using cabazitaxel lowered the risk of death by 84% (HR 0.16; 95% CI 0.04 – 0.68) compared with not using systemic treatment (p=0.013), treatment with abiraterone reduced the risk by 84% (SR 0.16; 95% CI 0.07 – 0.41) compared with not using systemic treatment (p<0.001). Conclusions: compared to TAX 327 trial, our patients were older and had been administered fewer docetaxel cycles, but had a better overall survival. Second line systemic treatment using cabazitaxel or abiraterone had a positive influence to patients’ lifespan

Straipsnyje nagrinėjama vienos žymiausių šiuolaikinių Lietuvos dizainerių Rasos Baradinskienės kūryba, j os pristatymas. Reprezentacinis šios menininkės kūrybos tapatumas tiriamas atliekant kompleksinę, konteksto, lyginamąją, formos, meninės raiškos analizę. Siekiama išsiaiškinti dizainerės darbų savitumo, kūrybinio vardo, kūrybos pristatymo sąsajas ir reprezentacijos ypatumus. Reikšminiai žodžiai: Dizainas; Pramoninis dizainas; Gaminio dizainas; Tapatumas; Reprezentacija; Design; Industrial design; Product design; Identity; RepresentationText explores the creative work of one of the most famous Lithuanian designers, Rasa Baradinskienė, and its presentation. The representative identity of Baradinskienės creative work is researched using complex, contextual, comparative and artistic analysis. The aim of the study is to pinpoint the connections of uniqueness of her work, creative name and the attributes of presenting her work. Baradinskienės creative work came to prominence during a complicated time for Lithuanian design. The search for a unique creative identity, the publicity of design in Lithuania and aspects of presenting a newly restored independent Lithuanian state abroad became especially important. Rasa Baradinskienė, a freelance designer, graduated from Kaunas Applied Arts School with speciality in textile and embroidery (1985-1987). From 1988-1993 she studied at the Design department of Vilnius Academy of Arts. She created the "RASA deSIGN" brand in 2002. This creative brand was contrived when Rasa started participating in international exhibitions and the need for distinctive and concise presentation arose. Four areas of work are noted in the designers biography: projects of furniture and lights fixtures, accessories projects, and graphics in the interior and design concepts. The outstanding features of Baradinskienės design are: transformation (construction of objects), harmonious contrast (creative expression), feelings (emotional influence) and signs (visual perception). The design motive allows the artist to connect emotionally to the viewer of the object. It acquires a symbolic quality in Barandinskienės work and becomes the sign spanning all areas of her work. The "Sign" is confirmed by the main anthropomorphic motives of her works - smiley face, hand and doll. Their function is utilitarian and the aesthetics are based on a positive emotional response. In this way the designer creates and develops the idea of emotive design. One of the segments of presentation of creative work and brand identity is Rasa Baradinskienės creative output the exhibitions which have been especially numerous. She has participated in more than 50 exhibitions in Lithuania and abroad and has organised various exhibitions herself. The design objects presented at the shows are often created for exhibitions and design events and not commissioned by manufacturers. This way the possibilities for individual artistic expression were opened and the creative brand strengthened

Rhythm embodied: Training Rasa in Hindustani tabla?

No full text
As Hindustani music (North Indian classical) and the performance of tabla moves outside of its South Asian origins the underlying aesthetic, rasa, and the structure of the musical system travels across and between musical and cultural borders informing and shaping the performative context. To what extent does the rasa concept, referred to as a ‘tasting’ experience, dominant in the arts of India, affect the global art of tabla? Often overlooked by scholars, and confused with the process of bhava (emotion) by performers, the concept and application of rasa continues to be the dominant aesthetic principle in what we have come to know globally as tabla soloing. I argue that it is in the phenomenological experience of music training and music making that we find a possible connection between the practice of rasa and the embodiment of bhava (performer emotion).Peer reviewedFinal article publishedHindustani musictablarasaexperienceemotionembodimen

Darbo tikslas – ištirti XX a. Lietuvos katalikų bažnyčios martirologą, remiantis kankinių biografijų pasakojimuose užfiksuotais kultūrinės traumos ir kolektyvinės atminties aspektais. Darbo naujumas ir aktualumas. XX a. kankinystė iki šiol lietuvių tyrinėtojų darbuose nėra plačiau įvertinta kaip kultūrinės traumos sudedamoji dalis, o kolektyvinės atminties kontekste kankinystė neišskiriama kaip svarbi tautos genocido dalis. Darbe keliama problema – kodėl į XX a. Lietuvos katalikų bažnyčios martirologą įtrauktų žmonių išgyventos patirtys ir jų laikysena totalitarinio režimo sąlygomis nėra tapusios kolektyvinės atminties dalimi. Darbo uždaviniai: 1) aptarti darbo teorinę ir metodologinę prieigą, pasitelkus kultūrinės traumos ir kolektyvinės atminties teorijas; 2) pateikti XX a. Lietuvos katalikų bažnyčios martirologo analizę; 3) ištirti XX a. The aim of the study is to analyse the Martyrology of Lithuanian Catholic Church in the 20th century based on aspects of cultural trauma and collective memory recorded biographies of martyrs. Recency and relevance of the work. Martyrdom of 20th as a component of cultural trauma and in the context of collective memory is still not widely assessed in the works of Lithuanian researchers and is not singled out as an important part of the nation's genocide. The issue posed in this study is why the experiences of people involved in the Martyrology of Lithuanian Catholic Church in the 20th Century and their attitude in the conditions of the totalitarian regime have not become a part of the collective memory. Tasks of the study: 1) to discuss the theoretical and methodological approach, using theories of cultural trauma and collective memory; 2) to present the analysis of Martyrology of Lithuanian Catholic Church in the 20th Century; 3) to study the Martyrology of Lithuanian Catholic Church cases as a multifaceted phenomenon in terms of cultural trauma; 4) to evaluate how the biographies of martyrs presented by the respondents and their experiences fit into the narrative of collective memory. The analysis is based on Danutė Gailienė‘s monography Ką jie mums padarė: Lietuvos gyvenimas traumų psichologijos žvilgsniu (Gailienė 2008) and theoretical approach to cultural trauma and collective memory by scholars Jeffrey C. Alexander, Neil J. Smelser and Piotr Sztompka (Alexander et al. 2004). For empirical research field research methods such as interview, structured interview, in-depth interview were used. The study consists of an introduction, four chapters that respond to the tasks of the study, and conclusions. The results of the study revealed that the trauma of church martyrs is still unexplored, and their traumatic experiences cannot always be judged by theories of cultural trauma and collective memory, as this requires an additional conception of theology and religious experience. Significant epistemological differences in terms of life, trauma, and suffering present a whole new relationship between homo religiosus and the traumatic event. Biographical narratives identify similar traumatic experiences caused by repressors of totalitarian regimes in different times: they similarly experience the fear of death, seeking similar support in faith to overcome a post-traumatic event. These similarities recorded in the study help to form a single shared collective memory.Kultūrų studijų katedra / Department of Cultural StudiesHumanitarinių mokslų fakultetas / Faculty of HumanitiesVytauto Didžiojo universitetas / Vytautas Magnus Universit

RASA

Abstract Rasa attempts to get at the heart of central Javanese traditional music (karawitan) by attending to what those closest to the tradition—the musicians themselves—say about it. Based on several years of research conducted in the regional cultural center of Solo, Indonesia, this book untangles the multiple aesthetic criteria applied by musicians in various contexts. Central to their aesthetic discourse was the complex notion of rasa: taste, feeling, affect, mood, sense, inner meaning, faculty of taste, faculty of sensing, faculty of knowing intuitively, deep understanding—all rolled into one. Working outward from this concept, the book addresses various questions: How is the vocabulary of rasa structured, and what does this tell us about Javanese aesthetics? Who or what has rasa, and what sorts of musical, psychological, perceptual, and sociological distinctions enter into this determination? How is rasa expressed musically? And how can exploring such questions lead to a fuller understanding of traditional Javanese music and of emotion and music in general? While acknowledging the possibility of universal psychological tendencies, the book demonstrates just how culturally specific musical meaning can be. This specificity results from the essentially connotative nature of musical meaning, which, following Wittgenstein on linguistic meaning, accrues through use. Relevant audio examples are provided through two media—an Oxford Web Music Web site and a four‐CD set (Gamelan de Solo) produced and annotated by the author and released by the Maison des Cultures du Monde—to help readers link Javanese terms and concepts to Javanese sound patterns.</jats:p

Locke's 'Tabula Rasa'", Reconsidered

No full text
Some people still talk about John Locke's "tabula rasa." In his An Essay Concerning Human Understanding, however, he does not actually use the words "tabula rasa." Although Locke did use "rasa tabula" in his 1671 drafts of Essay (John Locke, Drafts for the Essay Concerning Human Understanding and Other Philosophical Writings, ed. Peter H. Nidditch and G. A. J. Rogers, vol. 1 [Oxford: Oxford University Press, 1990], Draft A: p. 8, Draft B: p. 128), in the published Essay he used the term "white Paper" (John Locke, An Essay Concerning Human Understanding [1690], II. i. 2). Moreover, the phrase "tabula rasa" itself had been used by many people since a long time ago in the relationship with Aristotle's De anima, III. For example, it is found in Albertus Magnus (1200-1280), Thomas Aquinas (c. 1225-1274), Henry of Ghent (c. 1217-1293), and others. For these reasons, the phrase "Locke's 'tabula rasa'" is quite misleading

La notion de rasa dans le théâtre indien

This communication presents the notion of rasa in the Natyasastra, founding book of the theory of the theatre in India. This term defines the emotional state of the viewer needs the theater. The first meaning of the word rasa is sap, or juice of plants. One speaks, for example, of the rasa of the sugar cane that is what conveys the flavor of the cane sugar. The aesthetic experience is therefore presented as a tasting. Rasa is sensuality, proximity, experience. It is aromatic, it fills the space, absorbed by the body, it becomes a part, it works from the inside. Its means are similar to those in the kitchen : the combination and transformation of distinct elements in a new offering of the flavours mix. The Indian theatre prefer experience in distancing, the action of taste to that of judge. Author, actor, spectator, all have links, although different, with him rasa
