Scenario Modelling of Climate Change's Impact on Salinization of Coastal Water Resources in Reclaimed Lands
AbstractA numerical model accounting for variable density flow and transport was built up to quantify the actual and future (2050) salinization trends of a coastal aquifer in the Po delta (Northern Italy). SEAWAT 4.0 was employed to model the interaction between the surface drainage system and the underlying aquifer. PEST was employed for inverse parameter calibration using hydraulic heads and groundwater salinities as constraints. The calibrated model was used to predict the behavior of the coastal aquifer using a multiple scenario approach: increase in evapotranspiration induced by temperature increase; increase in the frequency of extreme high rainfall events; extreme drought conditions; and irrigation canals dewatering due to salinization of the Po River branches. For each scenario, two sub-scenarios were established to account for the projected local sea level rise. The first three scenarios have only minimal effects on the aquifer salinization, while the fourth forecasts a severe aquifer salinization due to enhanced upward fluxes of saline and hypersaline groundwater. The scenarios quantified the possible future salinization trends of groundwater and could be useful to identify adaptation strategies which allow to better manage water resources of this and similar areas. Results show that the Po delta will experience a significant salinization by 2050 and that the major cause is autonomous salinization via seepage of saline groundwater rather than enhanced salt-water intrusion due to sea level rise. The enhanced autonomous salinization will increase the salt export into the drainage canals that are also employed for irrigation, posing serious treats to the local flourishing agricultural economy

Les variations extrêmes au lac Tchad : l'assèchement est-il possible ?
Is Lake Chad going to disappear ?
Sixty years ago, General Tilho has written a paper, published in Annales de Géographie about the possibility to see Lake Chad without any water. After the knowledge he had about this topic, he made some predictions.
Using all the new data collected during the past sixty years, authors have tried to evaluate these ancient predictions and also to make new ones.
The conclusion is that if the climate does not fondamentaly change, a permanent drying of Lake Chad does not seems to be feared since a single year with heavy rains is enough to bring water up to a normal level ; but also that if man does not set an environmentaly sound management of the Lake Chad catchment there is an actual danger for a disappearance of Lake Chad.
Pouyaud B., Colombani J. Arsenic speciation in a contaminated coastal aquifer below a former fertilizer production plant
Inorganic arsenic has been widely used during
the production cycle of fertilizers and pesticides
and leakage into sub-soils and shallow
groundwater has been reported in the recent
literature (Root et al. 2009; Cancés et al. 2005).
Despite of this, most of the scientific papers has
been focused on natural arsenic mobilization
and geochemical cycling in the subsurface
(Hering J. G. and Kneebone 2002; Lin and Puls
2003). Thus, more studies are still needed to
understand the mobilization/immobilization
mechanisms of arsenic in highly contaminated
sites. Since the arsenic mobilization is usually
driven by redox processes, pH changes and
ionic strength of the solutions (Smedley and
Kinniburgh 2002), it is foremost important to
study its behavior in coastal aquifers where all of
these factors essentially coincide. In fact, like for
the surface waters, the groundwater mixing zone
can affect the biogeochemical cycling of metals
and nutrients, which are sensitive to changes in
salinity and redox potential (Slomp et al. 2004).
The study site is a former fertilizer plant located
near the shore line, in Italy. The overall
groundwater geochemistry at the study site has
been documented in a previous paper
(Mastrocicco et al. 2011). Within this framework,
a detailed characterization of arsenic in
groundwater was performed to elucidate the
mobilization/immobilization mechanisms actually
occurring at the site

As time progressed, bridges that were rated using the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) analytical load rating methods began to show lower load capacities than those that the bridges have proven to carry through load testing alternatives. This is especially true for reinforced concrete (RC) slab bridges which have complicated load path distributions and often benefit from load tests. This has resulted in unnecessary roadway restrictions, bridge closures, and other inconveniences to the communities that rely on these bridges for daily commute. Consequently, to provide better accuracy, the AASHTO Manual for Bridge Evaluation (MBE) offers the option of conducting load rating using field testing as an alternative to analytical computing rating factors for bridges.
In this study, diagnostic and proof load field tests are performed on two RC slab bridges to study the feasibility and constraints of using bridge load testing as a load rating method. AASHTO MBE and Effective Strip Width (EW) load rating approaches are used to compare results with AASHTO analytical load rating procedures. The results demonstrate the advantages to load testing over less reliable analytical load rating procedures. To reduce the complexity, time, and cost associated with instrumenting bridges for load testing, the study explores the feasibility of performing load tests using image-based techniques. Images of loaded bridges captured using consumer-grade cameras are used to monitor the displacement of the bridges during testing. The results from the field and laboratory studies show compelling results when compared to conventional Linear Variable Differential Transformer (LVDT) sensors. Furthermore, the studies show that image-based bridge monitoring techniques have great potential in conducting quick and cost-effective field-based load ratings of bridges. The research also investigates alternative approaches to field tests for structural monitoring of bridges. A satellite image-based technique is explored to evaluate the potential of this technology to measure small displacements in bridges. Moreover, the technique is applied to three different bridges to validate the approach and the simplicity of its application for bridge monitoring. The results show promising potential in the method to be used as a structural health monitoring strategy for bridges

Abstract
The present work proposes to consider continuities that occur in the works of Hesiod, Theogony and Works and Days, in relation to the notion of kosmos and see how these continuities present themselves, both in relation to the cosmic order and to the social universe, to deploy, in turn, a model of knowledge-power relationship originating with agents favorable to this order. The proposal takes into account the shift from poetry to philosophy, including both the poetic logos as well as concerns of philosophy, such as structures of thought that, conscious of the particular logic that sustains them, are able to take into consideration how they relate to the words and things of their particular historical configuration.
