Organizational Resources, External Environment, Innovation and Firm Performance: A Critical Review of Literature
Explaining why organizations in the same industry and markets differ in their performance remains a fundamental question within strategic management circles.Researchers have partly attributed the variation to a number of factors among them industry structure, resources of a firm, and continuous innovation that keep a firm a head of competition. On a global scale, there is continued search for the sources of variation in firm performance. As part of this effort, this paper reviews literature on factors that have partial explanation to variation in organization performance namely: organizational resources, external environment and innovation. It is apparent from literature that organization resources have a direct impact on performance. However, this influence is subject to other factors key among them the external environment and innovation. In an attempt to bring out extant gaps on how the resource - performance relationship is influenced by the external environment and innovation, this paper observes that these factors have been found to have independent effect on performance. However, their role in his respect remain scanty, both conceptually and empirically. To contribute to the current state of knowledge in this front, the paper proposes a conceptual model that can guide an empirical investigation on the influence of external environment and innovation on the relationship between organizational resources and performance. The empirical research, it is hoped will address the identified gaps. Key Words: Resources, External Environment, Innovation, expected firm Performance

Renaissance of Buddhism and Vipassana Meditation in Modern Burma
The paper describes Theravada Buddhism adopted in South-East Asia. In the first part the author (of Burmese origin but working in Poland) presents the traditional relations between the Burmese State and Buddhism.
The British colonial regime separated state administration from religious structure and deprived the Sangha of the state protection in the political, financial and educational spheres. Under such circumstances Buddhism suffered from degeneration and decomposition, even though it had been combined with the national identity. On the other hand, the Burmese, used to the traditional political-and-religious state power, disrespected the foreign (solely political) administration.
Independence resulted in the re-establishment of the traditional model of state power and of the state protection of Buddhism and the Sangha. The author outlines the main functions Buddhism performs in the modern Burmese State and its changing policy towards the Sangha. In his opinion, U Nu’s concept of democracy differed essentially from Western standards, since the government tried to “purify the citizens of their moral impurities” to build up a “Buddhist society”.
For ten years General Ne Win’s military regime maintained a predominantly civilian character, but later on it increased its ties with Buddhism and the Sangha. It resulted in a peculiar “Buddhist socialism” that combined Marxism and Buddhism. After 1988 the new military regime emphasised its religious ties even more. The state protection of Buddhism and the Sangha served not only to increase the authorities’ prestige, but also their control over the Sangha. The regime organised numerous magnificent religious ceremonies that undoubtedly increased the prestige of the ruling military junta.
In the second part of the study, the author shows the close ties of the Sangha with Burmese society and analyses the role of meditation in Buddhism. He outlines the particular characteristics of Buddhism and explains essential Buddhist notions. Then he moves on to a more detailed description of meditation itself and of its important place in the Buddhist Path. In addition to individual meditation practice, there was a lay meditation movement, which evolved as a kind of millenaristic national movement under the British colonial regime. It changed the traditional relations between the Burmese society and Buddhism. The Buddhist master Mahasi Sayadaw (1904-1982) contributed much to this new religious development in independent Burma. Notwithstanding the changes of the regime, the Buddhist mass meditation movement remains an important part of the Burmese social and spiritual life and it has great impact on Burmese society
Adaptive strategies and local innovations of smallholder farmers in selected agri-food systems of central Kenya
Food production in Kenya is closely related to smallholder agricultural
production. Paradoxically, many smallholders suffer extended periods of
food crises. This underscores the importance of understanding the
multiple pathways smallholders use to deal with food insecurity.
Participatory action research, using both qualitative and quantitative
methods was undertaken to identify adaptation strategies and
innovations used to address food insecurity vulnerabilities. A sample
of 360 households was drawn randomly from 18 farmers’ groups
living under acute food and livelihood crisis (Mbeere South district);
experiencing borderline food insecurity (Kirinyaga West District) and
those with low resilience (Nyandarua North District) all in Kenya.
Results showed that smallholders in these areas use and perpetuate
diverse adaptive strategies and innovations for coping with
vulnerability, for risk avoidance and for livelihoods insurance
enhancement. These strategies and innovations ought to be recognised by
research, development and policy actors and should inform interventions
intended to strengthen smallholder agri-food systems in Kenya.

Epidemiology of Cervical Squamous Intraepithelial Lesions in HIV Infected Women in Kenya: a cross-Sectional Study
Cervical cancer is the second most common cancer among women worldwide. Infection with the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and its related immunosuppression are associated with an increased risk of prevalent, incident, and persistent squamous intraepithelial lesions (SILs) of the cervix. The objective of the study was to describe the prevalence and predictors of high-risk HPV and cervical cancer to support the need for strengthening cervical cancer screening programs for HIV infected women in Kenya. A cross sectional study was conducted in a hospital in Central Kenya, Kiambu district. The study population constituted of HIV positive women attending the ART treatment clinic. A total of 715 HIV positive women initiated on Antiretroviral Therapy (ART) were enrolled in this study. About 359 (52.1%) were less than 40 years of age and 644 (90.3%) of the patients were widowed. About 642 (92.6%) of the HIV infected women were in follow-up period of ≥ 1 year. The outcome/prognosis of the patients undergoing ICC was 3 cured, 5 good and 4 poor respectively. In a multivariable ordinal logistic regression analysis showed that for a one-unit decrease of CD4, we expect 1.23 log odds of increasing the severity of cervical cancer (B=1.23, P<0.015), given that all of the other variables in the model are held constant. In conclusion screening of all HIV infected women, who are under HIV care and treatment, enrolling patients on HAART with higher CD4 counts is recommended to see the net effect of HAART response. Keywords: Cancer screening, ART, SILs, Women, CD
