Since Pilgrimage’s first edition, in 1614, thirty-one years after the author´s death, the discussions have ensued regarding the fictional versus documentary truth of the narratives and descriptions within the work. The present dissertation aims to take a broader view of the problem. Based on a historical and anthropological concept of “feast”, we will study the ways in which the feast is present in Chinese space in Pilgrimage, a work of travel literature. Much more than establishing a typology, this study will, through careful commentary on Mendes Pinto´s text, seek to understand the significance of the festivity´s thematization or representation therein. In addition to the relationships between Mendes Pinto´s text and other texts, some Chinese pictorial works will also be considered for comparison and illustration of the social behaviors of the time and the situations narrated in the Pilgrimage, from the perspective of the “other”

The Peregrinação is a work by Fernão Mendes Pinto, first published in Lisbon in 1614, about 31 years after the death of its author. A work of unquestionable complexity highlights the author's effort to make his contemporaries and countrymen understand a distant reality, in a way that it does not confront the established powers, expectations of an imperial representation and the Portuguese existence in the East, built from early 1500 and in phase of deep challenges. In contexts of often improvised cultural encounters, Fernão Mendes Pinto records what he sees, and he seeks to interpret it. The author insists on the testimonial character of what is reported, and thus personal experience is presented as a guarantee of truth of the facts offered. At the same time, through his observations, he reveals an image of the Portuguese in the East, through statements made by himself, or by using the voice of other, questioning the intentions of Portuguese policies and agents in the East. Peregrinação is an unavoidable testimony of the individual and collective vulnerabilities of the Portuguese project in the East. The need of the other, and the need to cooperate, and to make alliances with the other (in a world in which the Portuguese are just one more among many other entities in dialogue or in confrontation), encourage practices that deserve even nowadays our attention

Future changes in extreme rainfall events and circulation patterns over southern Africa

    No full text
Includes bibliographical referencesChanges in precipitation extremes are projected by many global climate models as a response to greenhouse gas increases, and such changes will have significant environmental and social impacts. These impacts are a function of exposure and vulnerability. Hence there is critical need to understand the nature of weather and climate extremes. Results from an ensemble of regional climate models from the Coordinated Regional Downscaling Experiment (CORDEX) project are used to investigate projected changes in extreme precipitation characteristics over southern Africa for the middle (2036-2065) and late century (2069-2098) under the representative concentration pathway 4.5 (RCP4.5) and 8.5 (RCP8.5). Two approaches are followed to identify and analyze extreme precipitation events. First, indices for extreme events, which capture moderate extreme events, are calculated on the basis of model data and are compared with indices from two observational gridded datasets at annual basis. The second approach is based on extreme value theory. Here, the Generalized Extreme Value distribution (GEV) is fitted to annual maxima precipitation by a L-moments method. The 20-year return values are analyzed for present and future climate conditions. The physical drivers of the projected change are evaluated by examining the models ability to simulate circulation patterns over the regions with the aid of Self-Organizing Maps (SOM)

Direct numerical simulations of particle-driven gravity currents in a basin configuration

    No full text
Three-dimensional highly resolved Direct Numerical Simulations (DNS) of a particle-driven gravity current are presented for the lock-exchange problem in a basin configuration. Two Reynolds numbers are investigated in order to identify differences in the flow structures and dynamics. For this numerical study, we limit our investigations to gravity currents over a flat bed in which density differences are small enough for the Boussinesq approximation to be valid. The concentration of particles is described in an Eulerian fashion by using a transport equation combined with the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations, with possibility of particles deposition but no erosion and re-suspension. For this original flow configuration, it is found that the Reynolds number has a strong influence on the flow, in particular on the deposition pattern over the flat bed. Furthermore, we found out that the well-known lobe-and-cleft patterns at the head of the current have a different shape than what is usually observed for the lock-exchange problem in a channel configuration. The curvated shape of the front has a significant twisting effect on the structures at the head of the current

Examination of closely related species pairs is suggested for evolutionary comparisons of different degrees of polyphagy, which we did here with three taxa of lepidopteran herbivores,Spodopteraspp (S. littoralis,S. frugiperdamaize (C) and rice (R) strains) for a RNAseq analysis of the midguts from the 3rd instar insect larvae for differential metabolic responses after feeding on pinto bean based artificial diet vs maize leaves. Paired-end (2×100bp) Illumina HiSeq2500 sequencing resulted in a total of 24, 23, 24, and 21 million reads for the SF-C-Maize, SF-C-Pinto, SF-R-Maize, SF-R Pinto, and a total of 35 and 36 million reads for the SL-Maize and SL-Pinto samples, respectively. After quality control measures, a total of 62.2 million reads from SL and 71.7 million reads from SF were used for transcriptome assembly (TA). The resulting finalde novoreference TA (backbone) for the SF taxa contained 37,985 contigs with a N50 contig size of 1030bp and a maximum contig length of 17,093bp, while for SL, 28,329 contigs were generated with a N50 contig size of 1980bp and a maximum contig length of 18,267bp. Give growth and macroeconomic stability in Russia a chance - harden budgets by eliminating nonpayments

    Get PDF
The authors analyze the links between Russia's disappointing growth performance in the second half of the 1990s, its costly and unsuccessful stabilization, the macroeconomic meltdown of 1998, and the spectacular rise of non-payments. Non-payments flourished in an environment of fundamental inconsistency between a macroeconomic policy geared at sharp disinflation, and a microeconomic policy of bailing enterprises out through soft budget constraints. Heavy untargeted implicit subsidies flowing through the non-payments system (amounting to 10 percent of GDP annually) have stifled growth, contributed to the August 1998 meltdown, through their impact on public debt, and have made at best a questionable contribution to equity. Dismantling this system must be a top priority, along with promoting enterprise restructuring and growth (by hardening budget constraints) and medium-term macroeconomic stability (by reducing the size of subsidies). Getting the government out of the non-payments system means settling all appropriately controlled budgetary expenditures on time, and in cash, and eschewing spending arrears, thereby setting an example for enterprises, and laying the groundwork for eliminating tax offsets at all levels of government, and insisting on cash tax payments. To stop energy-related subsidies, would require not only that the government pay its own energy bills on time, and in cash, but also that the energy monopolies be empowered to disconnect non-paying clients. This will enable the government to insist that the energy monopolies in turn pay their own taxes in full, and on time.Banks&Banking Reform,Public Sector Economics&Finance,Economic Theory&Research,Payment Systems&Infrastructure,Environmental Economics&Policies,Banks&Banking Reform,Environmental Economics&Policies,Municipal Financial Management,Public Sector Economics&Finance,Economic Theory&Research

Black market premia, exchange rate unification, and inflation in sub-Saharan Africa

    Get PDF
In countries where the black market premium on foreign exchange is exceptionally high, often more than 100 percent, lowering the black market rate to a level close to the market determined official rate will improve the balance of payments and increase exports. Floating the currency to depreciate the real exchange rate and make exports more competitive can raise inflation substantially, however, as governments replace the lost revenue from exports. Inflation will occur even if real government spending remains constant unless there are new taxes or spending cuts to compensate for the loss of implicit tax revenues. To avoid costly surges in inflation, exchange rate reform may have to proceed slowly, otherwise the depreciation is likely to meet with considerable political and social opposition as inflation rises. Once the government closes the spread between the official and black market rates, it faces a decision on whether to continue with a float permanently. Evidence from developing countries over the next few years should give some insights into this issue.Economic Stabilization,Environmental Economics&Policies,Markets and Market Access,Access to Markets,Economic Theory&Research
