    Contributions to the introduction of Itoh-Paeonia in the Republic of Moldova

    Only AbstractThe achievements of the Japanese breeder Toichi Itoh, from the middle of the 20th century (1948), had a crucial impact on peony breeding. By successfully crossing the woody peony ′Alice Harding′ with the herbaceous peony ′Kakoden′, he obtained absolutely exceptional hybrids: the leaves are similar to the woody peony, and the habit is similar to the herbaceous peony. In the cold season of the year, the aerial part dies. According to recent classifications, they are attributed to intersectional hybrids (Moutan section x Paeonia section). Of the 36 seeds resulting from the hybridizations, 9 plants inherited the characters of the woody variety, and the rest of the seeds generated herbaceous plants. Toichi Itoh died in 1956, before being able to enjoy the results of his work. The researcher's work was continued by his assistant Shigao-Oshida, who in 1963 recorded the flowering of hybrids for the first time. The first generation of Itoh-hybrids was promoted by the American horticulturist Luis Smirnov, who bought Toichi Itoh's patent. Later, as a co-author, he patented the varieties ′Yellow Emperor′, ′Yellow Dream′ etc. After a break in peony breeding, in 1988, the American breeder R. Anderson obtained significant results, fascinating the world with the Itoh-hybrids created, declaring that these robust, exceptional varieties are the flowers of the future (Martin Page, 1997)

    This paper analyzes the impact of heterogeneous (social) preferences on the weighting and combination of performance measures as well as on a firm’s profitability. We consider rivalry, egoism and altruism as extreme forms within the continuum of possible preferences and show that the principal can typically exploit both the altruistic and rivalistic behavior of his agents. Firm profits reach their maximum value if the agents are differentiated as much as possible in their individual characteristics. We provide further insight; namely, that in order to realize these gains in profitability, it is necessary to reallocate participation in performance measures such that competitive agents are privileged as compared to altruistic agents. In this context, stochastic interdependencies are of importance since they yield overlapping functions of the share parameters, causing additional adaptations in the optimal design of the wage compensation system.Social Preferences; Rivalry; Altruism; Egoism; Team Composition; Performance Measurement

    Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

    We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature.     The first registered Paeonia Itoh hybrid cv. Hexie in China is a naturally occurring intersectional hybrid of Sect. Paeonia and Sect. Moutan. In this study, we sequenced, assembled, and analyzed the complete chloroplast genome of Paeonia Itoh hybrid cv. Hexie. The result showed that the chloroplast genome of Hexie, with a typical circular tetrad structure, is 152,958 bp in length, comprising a large single copy (LSC) region of 84,613 bp, a small single copy (SSC) region of 17,051 bp, and two reverse complementary sequences (IRs) of 25,647 bp. The chloroplast genome encoded 116 genes, including 80 protein-coding genes, 32 tRNA genes, and 4 rRNA genes. Phylogenetic analysis inferred from the shared protein-coding genes showed that the Paeonia Itoh hybrid cv. Hexie had the closest phylogenetic relationship with P. suffruticosa, followed by P. ostii, indicating that P. suffruticosa was its maternal parent. This study provides a molecular resource for phylogenetic and maternal parent studies of Paeonia Itoh hybrid, contributing to a basis for Paeonia Itoh hybrid breeding strategies in the future.fals

    Both spending and tax policies have been implemented in the United States with the goal of stimulating private sector research and development (R&D). Karier questions whether current R&D policy, especially the research and experimentation tax credit, can contribute to closing the gap between nondefense expenditures on R&D in the United States and such expenditures in other countries, such as Japan and Germany. He also explores possible changes to our current R&D policy to make it more effective.

    Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed.     Making tracks: electronic excitation roles in forming swift heavy ion tracks

    Swift heavy ions cause material modification along their tracks, changes primarily due to their very dense electronic excitation. The available data for threshold stopping powers indicate two main classes of materials. Group I, with threshold stopping powers above about 10 keV nm(-1), includes some metals, crystalline semiconductors and a few insulators. Group II, with lower thresholds, comprises many insulators, amorphous materials and high T-c oxide superconductors. We show that the systematic differences in behaviour result from different coupling of the dense excited electrons, holes and excitons to atomic (ionic) motions, and the consequent lattice relaxation. The coupling strength of excitons and charge carriers with the lattice is crucial. For group II, the mechanism appears to be the self- trapped exciton model of Itoh and Stoneham ( 1998 Nucl. Instrum. Methods Phys. Res. B 146 362): the local structural changes occur roughly when the exciton concentration exceeds the number of lattice sites. In materials of group I, excitons are not self- trapped and structural change requires excitation of a substantial fraction of bonding electrons, which induces spontaneous lattice expansion within a few hundred femtoseconds, as recently observed by laser- induced time- resolved x- ray diffraction of semiconductors. Our analysis addresses a number of experimental results, such as track morphology, the efficiency of track registration and the ratios of the threshold stopping power of various materials
