From Albania to Brazil: Ismail Kadaré's Broken april and its filmic adaptation, Walter Salles' Abril despedaçado
No full textDissertação (mestrado) - Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina, Centro de Comunicação e Expressão, Programa de Pós-Graduação em Letras/Inglês e Literatura Correspondente, Florianópolis, 2007The aim of the present study is to analyse how issues of Albanian national identity are portrayed in Ismail Kadaré's novel Broken April (Prilli i Thyer), and how such features have been appropriated and translated onto the screen into a Northeastern Brazilian context. I depart from the premise that, even though Brazilian elements are indeed shown in the film, the non existence of the Kanun in Brazil, and the use of narrative techniques different from the ones employed in the novel render the story of the blood feuds in the film more universal than the genuinely Albanian reality depicted in the novel. In sum, the appropriation transcends the Albanian reality into a universal context, showing, at the same time, elements which are typical of the Brazilian culture.O objetivo do presente estudo é analisar como questões sobre a identidade nacional Albanesa são retratadas no romance Abril Despedaçado (Prilli i Thyer), de Ismail Kadaré, e como tais questões foram apropriadas e traduzidas para a tela num contexto Nordestino-Brasileiro. O estudo parte do princípio que, embora elementos tipicamente Brasileiros sejam mostrados no filme, a não existência do Kanun no Brasil, e o uso de técnicas narrativas diferentes das empregadas no romance ajudam a deixar a história das brigas de família no filme com um aspecto mais universal do que a realidade genuinamente Albanesa representada na romance. Em suma, a apropriação transcende a realidade Albanesa para um contexto mais universal, sem deixar de mostrar também elementos típicos da cultura Brasileira

No full textThe paper reconstructs the arduous journey made by Ismail Kadare's fiction from the early 1970s to the present day, focusing attention on various quest-ions that regard the translation of Kadare's work into over 40 languages. The analysis focuses in particular on the mediation of French in translations of his work and on Kadare's reception in Italy. In addition to providing a detailed account of the works translated so far, the author traces the possible path for future translations, highlighting the gaps in Italian versions of his works and the complexity of the latest authorial versions. Anlatacağımız öykümüzün başkahramanları da istemsiz katıldıkları bu yarışta parkuru bitirme mecburiyetinde olan milyonlarca insandan yalnızca ikisi.Bu yarışta şartlar eşit değildir ve bir mucize olmadığı müddetçe de asla eşit olmayacaktır. Peki bu mucize bir gün onlar için kapıyı çalacak mıdır? Kim bilir?belki. O da ayrı bir öykünün konusu. Personnel evaluation under intuitionistic fuzzy environment
No full textIn this paper, a new approach is proposed to solve multi-person and multi-attribute evaluation problems under an intuitionistic fuzzy environment. The proposed evaluation approach is mainly grounded on the integration of the score function and aggregation operator for intuitionistic fuzzy sets. To illustrate the application of the novel approach, a numerical example for evaluating engineers according to attributes of T-shaped engineers is given. The novelty of this study is that it defines T-shaped engineer selection as a multi-attribute evaluation problem in the literature for the first time. In addition, it proposes an integrated intuitionistic fuzzy evaluation approach in which the candidates are evaluated at both technical (hard) skills and non-technical (soft) skills. This study contributes to the literature as it provides a novel insight into the theoretical ground of the personnel selection problem. © 2020, Ismail Saritas. All rights reserved

Heterogeneous and tissue-specific regulation of effector T cell responses by IFN-gamma during Plasmodium berghei ANKA infection.
No full textIFN-γ and T cells are both required for the development of experimental cerebral malaria during Plasmodium berghei ANKA infection. Surprisingly, however, the role of IFN-γ in shaping the effector CD4(+) and CD8(+) T cell response during this infection has not been examined in detail. To address this, we have compared the effector T cell responses in wild-type and IFN-γ(-/-) mice during P. berghei ANKA infection. The expansion of splenic CD4(+) and CD8(+) T cells during P. berghei ANKA infection was unaffected by the absence of IFN-γ, but the contraction phase of the T cell response was significantly attenuated. Splenic T cell activation and effector function were essentially normal in IFN-γ(-/-) mice; however, the migration to, and accumulation of, effector CD4(+) and CD8(+) T cells in the lung, liver, and brain was altered in IFN-γ(-/-) mice. Interestingly, activation and accumulation of T cells in various nonlymphoid organs was differently affected by lack of IFN-γ, suggesting that IFN-γ influences T cell effector function to varying levels in different anatomical locations. Importantly, control of splenic T cell numbers during P. berghei ANKA infection depended on active IFN-γ-dependent environmental signals--leading to T cell apoptosis--rather than upon intrinsic alterations in T cell programming. To our knowledge, this is the first study to fully investigate the role of IFN-γ in modulating T cell function during P. berghei ANKA infection and reveals that IFN-γ is required for efficient contraction of the pool of activated T cells
Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
No full textWe conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more
