The selection of the Bayesian coincident-index models using model comparison criterion with application in Langat river water quality data

In this study, three types of Bayesian coincident-index models were designed based on modification from the so-called Stock-Watson (S-W) index, i.e. the established economic coincident-index. The S-W index approach is commonly used to estimate parameters using sufficient time series data in composite index. However, the S-W approach in small time series data sets, irregular observations and unbalanced data across time is not well-studied. Essentially, all the problem situations are easily handled under the proposed class of Bayesian models. Therefore, we were motivated to design a new Bayesian S-W coincident-index with application in river water quality index. The river water quality data has been chosen due to the availability of small, unbalanced data sets and irregular observations at particular time in selected sampling sites. We tested all the new algorithms which are based on the three coincident-index model i.e. model with no lag, model with first order lag in the water quality variables and model with a lag for unobserved water quality index. We used Bayesian model comparison criterion to choose the best coincident-index model. Deviance Information Criteria (DIC) was performed as a criterion for selecting models since its application to a variety of data-diagnostic models was not well-discussed. Sensitivity model analyses for all models were also reported. The results showed that the model with σ prior 2 was the most appropriate for the Langat river water quality data in the selected sampling sites. The results also showed that that the third model with σ prior 2 for all sampling sites was the most adequate

The Langat River water quality index based on principal component analysis

River Water Quality Index (WQI) is calculated using an aggregation function of the six water quality sub-indices variables, together with their relative importance or weights respectively. The formula is used by the Department of Environment to indicate a general status of the rivers in Malaysia. The six elected water quality variables used in the formula are, namely: suspended solids (SS), biochemical oxygen demand (BOD), ammoniacal nitrogen (AN), chemical oxygen demand (COD), dissolved oxygen (DO) and pH. The sub-indices calculations, determined by quality rating curve and their weights, were based on expert opinions. However, the use of sub-indices and the relative importance established in the formula is very subjective in nature and does not consider the inter-relationships among the variables. The relationships of the variables are important due to the nature of multi-dimensionality and complex characteristics found in river water. Therefore, a well-known multivariate technique, i.e. Principal Component Analysis (PCA) was proposed to re-calculate the water quality index specifically in Langat River based on the inter-relationship approach. The application of this approach is not well-studied in river water quality index development studies in Malaysia. Hence, the approach in the study is relevant and important since the first river water quality development took place in 1981. The PCA results showed that the weights obtained indicate the difference in ranking of the relative importance for particular variables compared to the classical approaches used in WQI-DOE. Based on the new weights, the Langat River water quality index was calculated and the comparison between both indexes was also discussed in this paper

From plural society to Bangsa Malaysia : ethnicity and nationalism in the politics of nation-building in Malaysia

The question of nation-building has always been a central issue in Malaysian politics. Whilst the country has been able to sustain a relatively stable politics since the 1969 tragedy, and hence spawn a rapid economic development (at least until the 1997 Asian economic crisis), the project of nation-building remained a basic national agenda yet to be fully resolved. This study investigates the delicate process of nation-building in Malaysia in the post 1970s, especially in the context of the vision of constructing the Bangsa Malaysia or 'a united Malaysian nation' enshrined in Mahathir's Vision 2020 project which was introduced in 1991. The aim of the study is firstly, to examine the underlying socio-political parameters that shaped and influenced the politics of nation-building in the country, and secondly, to explore the viability of the project of Bangsa Malaysia in the context of the daunting challenges involved in the process of nation-building. Drawing from a range of theoretical frameworks as well as from both primary and secondary data, the study contends that, based on the Malaysian experience, the potent interplay between the forces of ethnicity and nationalism constitute the crux of the problems in the politics of nation-building in Malaysia. This dialectic it is argued, stems from the prevalence of the varying perceptions of 'nation-of-intent' within and across ethnic groups. These phenomena have not only shaped the pattern of ethnic political mobilisation in the country, but above all, laid the most complex set of obstacles in the path of the project of nation-building. This study argues that the project of constructing the Bangsa Malaysia therefore, can be seen as a significant attempt by the state to reconcile the varying ethnic ideologies of nation-of-intent. It can also be considered as an attempt to consolidate Malay nationalism and cultural pluralism, thus, depicting 'the nation' as a 'mosaic of cultures', or reflecting a creation of 'a supra-ethnic' national identity. However, the viability of the envisaged project is yet to be tested. The concept itself is still vague to many people and the challenges ahead are enormous, involving political, economic, socio-cultural and religious issues. Indeed, the project risks becoming the 'latest' in the series of competing notions of nation-of-intent circulating in Malaysia. This study contends that whilst, to some extent, the socio-political landscape of Malaysian society has been rapidly changing, especially under the eighteen years of Mahathir's reign, ethnicity still pervades Malaysian political life. This study differs from many previous studies on nation-building in Malaysia which have mainly focused on either the historical dimensions or those which have examined the impact of key national policies. As such, it is hoped that this study would be able to provide an alternative perspective in the analysis of ethnic relations and nation-building in Malaysia, thus broadening the understanding of Malaysian politics and society

Application of quarter-sweep iteration for first order linear Fredholm integro-differential equations

    No full text
The main core of this paper is to analyze the application of the quarter-sweep iterative concept on finite difference and composite trapezoidal schemes with Gauss-Seidel iterative method to solve first order linear Fredholm integro-differential equations. The formulation and implementation of the Full-, Half- and Quarter-Sweep Gauss-Seidel methods namely FSGS, HSGS and QSGS respectively are also presented for performance comparison. Furthermore, computational complexity and percentage reduction analysis are also included and integrated with several numerical simulations. Based on numerical results, findings show the proposed QSGS method with the corresponding discretization schemes is superior compared to FSGS and HSGS iterative methods

STUDI PEMIKIRAN MUSTAFA AKYOL DAN HASHIM KAMALI TERHADAP PENERAPAN SANKSI APOSTASI: ANALISIS HERMENEUTIKA NEGOSIATIF

The death penalty for people who left from Islam is contrary to religious freedom. Human rights, which is the dominant discourse today, calls for a re-reading of the death penalty. The implication, there are many scholars who re-think the punishment of apostasy. Among them are Mustafa Akyol and Hashim Kamali who goes into this line. If the first name lives in the middle of a society where Muslims are a minority (America), then it is different from the last name. Hashim Kamali disseminated his ideas in Malaysia, one of the countries adhering to classical Islamic traditions. The fundamental question in this study is how the sanctions of apostasy are discussed again by the two thinkers. This type of research is qualitative with future data on a library study (library research). These research data are derived from the representative works of Mustafa Akyol and Hashim Kamali on the subject of apostasy. Furthermore, the findings of their thinking are studied through the framework of negotiative hermeneutic theory. This theory was initiated by Khaled Abou El Fadl who pointed to the negotiations between the three entities, the author, the text and the reader. There are three key variables in discussing the thinking of Mustafa Akyol and Hashim Kamali. From texts and authority, the discourse of authoritarianism to the anatomy of the discourses of authority. Based on that, the approach taken here is socio-legal. The first conclusion both Mustafa Akyol and Hashim Kamali have rejected the death penalty for apostasy. Second conclusion is using three variables when being analyzed by negotiative hermeneutic. In text and authority is able to be seen how a text is formed and its relationship with the social reality that surrounds it. The differences between the public who became the audience of them necessitate the differences in steps in the re-reading of this topic. On the discourse of authoritarianism can be reviewed the formation of non-authoritarian law by placing it as an entity that is constantly changing. Besides meeting the five prerequisites set by the hermeneutics of negotiations. In the anatomy of authoritarian discourse, there are three things that are discussed: consistency, a selective attitude to signs to the balance of interests and rationality. These two thinkers consistently use their respective steps in this topic. While Mustafa Akyol is selective to the sign, unlike Hashim Kamali. Despite this, they met at the same point with the conclusion that there is no death penalty for apostate perpetrators. This discussion is based on the success of both merging the importance of preserving religion and protecting human rights
