    Get PDF
When the fateful (and fatal) rock comes down on Simon de Montfort in the Song of the Albigensian Crusade, it appears to be the culmination of an ineluctable series of events orchestrated by divine Providence since the council of the Lateran. By depicting Pope Innocent III engaging in bibliomancy, and introducing a subtle web of repetitions and resonances running through the text, the anonymous author of the continuation identifies the council of the Lateran as the tipping point of Simon de Montfort’s destiny : despite acting as the military representative of the Church, and thus supposedly operating with its favor and support, he is shown to be abandoned by both God and the Pope in favor of Raymond de Toulouse. From this starting point the author establishes an inextricable conflict between the will of divine Providence, the will of the Church and the will of Simon de Montfort, elevating the latter to the role of tragic hero

    No full text
This study is based on a passage from the apostolic exhortation of Pope Francis, Evangelii gaudium, concerning the parish and the associative life (EG 28 and 29), in a section entitled «An ecclesial renewal that cannot be differed (cf. EG 27-33). In this passage of the exhortation, the Pope discusses the relations between the parish and associations and their mutual rapport and the conditions of their contribution to the «missionary transformation of the Church» (according to the very title of the first chapter of the exhortation, EG 19-49). After some preliminary reflections on freedom of association and on the mystery of the Church (I), the author will examine EG 28 and 29 to determine the relevance of the parish institution (II), its relativity (III), as well as the richness of associative life (IV). It will then treat the articulation of the associations as such in the parish (V), the impact of the associative commitment of the parishioners (VI), and finally the favorable conditions for an integration of associations by parish and parishioners (VII). These persons, including the parish priest, will facilitate the contact of the associations with the parish. The diocesan bishop will promote their integration into diocesan pastoral care. It will be up to the associations to wish to integrate themselves into it and to contribute effectively to it by virtue of their charisms and their works of the apostolate

The new enfant du siècle: Joseph de Maistre as a writer

    No full text
The essays contained within this volume were first presented at Reappraisals/Reconsidérations, the Fifth International Colloquium on Joseph de Maistre, held at Jesus College, Cambridge on 4 and 5 December 2008.Series editor-in-chief: Guy Rowlands, University of St AndrewsJoseph de Maistre's reputation as a writer is legendary. His style, unique and alive, moulded the French language anew. It sabotaged his attempts at anonymous publication and earned him, through the centuries, the praises of enemies and admirers. Yet the relationship between Maistre's thought and writing remains ill-known. This collection is the first to examine how Maistre's ideas – including his denunciation of the written word – intersected with his writing practices and personas. The essays disclose an author formed by duty and affectionate relationships, by the conventions of public combat, by an intense sense of history, and by the imperatives of Revolution.Introduction: assessing Maistre's style and rhetoric / Richard A. die literarische Verarbeitung des nigerianischen Bürgerkrieges

    Get PDF
No other topic has dominated the Nigerian literature as much as the Nigerian Civil War and female authors increasingly interfere in its literary representation. The thesis evaluates 34 literary texts by 16 female Nigerian authors - 12 novels and 22 short stories - and analyses them as distinctive corpus whose individual texts are in a state of dialogue both with each other and with texts from male authors. The female authors use, in their "war talk", literary strategies like "re-reading" and "re-writing" of texts from the "Centre". On the one hand, these strategies enable them to make the blind spots of a male dominated literary discourse apparent/visible on the other hand, they facilitate the negotiation of gender relations and of the war itself, its causes, trigger points and consequences. The female authors represent war as "sexual disorder", as gender war. The study shows that in order to be able to locate an author''s perspective (and to avoid rash conclusions) it is essential to consider the different factors determining it - besides ethnicity and gender, also age, race, the grade of emotional involvement or distance etc. It is in this regard, where the paratexts play an important part, as in these authors express their personal views and comments on the war. The thesis is located at the interfaces of several disciplines: literary, historical and gender studies. The introduction deals with the theoretical backgrounds in the context of war, literary representation and gender. The first chapter is dedicated to the historical context of the Nigerian Civil War including the role of women. The second chapter looks at the paratexts, different representations of the war''s causes, the self-image, the enemy''s image and the future. The third chapter finally deals with the question how the relationship between Civil War and gender war is negotiated/conveyed through the medium of the literary texts. In the conclusion the results are summarized and prospects for future research are discussed. The appendix contains a preliminary bibliography of all literary texts on the Nigerian Civil War written by female authors

Data collection and generation for radio frequency signal security

    No full text
The current proliferation of unmanned aerial systems (UASs) for a wide range of applications ranging from commercial to defence purposes demands the need for their protection. The development of security tools and techniques will need realistic radio frequency (RF) datasets for research and testing. This chapter presents an on-going research and development effort to produce RF signal datasets that can be used for the development and testing of machine learning (ML) systems. We envision that these systems will ultimately be the precursor of future autonomous and secure UAS to benefit society for many generations.Conference Pape
