DESIGN for COASTALSCAPE. The spatial dimension of land-sea planning

The PhD examines the phenomenon of coastal territories and their land and sea dynamics by a planning perspective. The study starts from the consideration that half of the world’s population interacts daily with the sea through living in coastal cities and that these geographical areas are under constant pressure from anthropic activities and climate change threats. This doctoral dissertation aims to understand how a well-structured framework of knowledge about land-sea interactions might enhance the resilience of coastalscapes. The research considers multiple approaches to tackle the topic from diverse points of view. The PhD path is divided into two key milestones. The first key milestone of the research, coming along on a double literature review on land-sea interactions, attempts to detect, find gaps and build a framework of knowledge on land-sea interactions in order to make more accessible the topic to scientists and policymakers. The second key milestone endeavours to enlarge the knowledge gained from the first key milestone; by looking at the coastal area through a different lens, it tries to interpret the land-sea interactions phenomena that shape the coastalscape. This milestone is based on multiple case studies approach through a mapping analysis. The first phase is focused on understanding the typologies of anthropic and natural environments present in the case studies through three types of mapping analysis. The second phase zooms in on edge to understand the components of the coastalscape by revealing a common mapping language. The approach and methods used in the research - the double literature review, fluxes schemes and mapping - have contributed to the knowledge and even though applied on four specific cases can be relevant as guidance through the study of other cases

PERFORMING THE SOCIAL Education, Care and Social Inclusion through Theatre

    No full text
Although belonging to the wider family of applied theatre, social theatre has some specific historical, methodological and contextual characteristics. When taking part in social theatre, people, groups and even larger, more recognisable social systems actively transform and improve their life-worlds through their direct involvement in theatrical, ludic, festive and performative practices. The actors’, authors’ and spectators’ participation in such cultural practices – combined with powerful representations, actions and relationships – leads to symbolic inner growth and regeneration in the social body. This book, which opens with an introduction by Claudio Bernardi, explores the whys and wherefores of social theatre with particular attention to Italy. It is structured around two types of contribution. One comes from the interventions of some of the speakers at the International Conference Performing the Social.Education,Care and Social Inclusion through Theatre, held in Milan on 20-21 September 2019.They are Isabel Bezelga, Marco De Marinis, David Le Breton, Tim Prentki,Pier Cesare Rivoltella, Diana Taylor, James Thompson and Emmanuel Wallon. The second part is a more direct result of the Research Project of Nation-al Relevance (PRIN) with the same title; namely the application of social theatre in the fields of education, health and inclusion. The authors of these essays are Carla Bino, Roberta Carpani, Livia Cavaglieri, Guido Di Palma, Fabrizio Fiaschini, Roberta Gandolfi, Giulia Innocenti Malini, Stefano Locatelli, Alberto Pagliarino, Alessandro Pontremoli,Alessandra Rossi Ghiglione

Orizzonti mantovani. Spunti e dinamiche paesaggistiche ne L'Illustrissimo di Alberto Cantoni

In the literary production of Alberto Cantoni, short story writer and novelist between the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, the novel L'Illustrissimo is highly important both because it is the last publication of the author, from Pomponesco, a small town a few kilometers south of Mantua, both because it summarizes in a single text the different nuances and different directions that his writing has taken over the course of his literary career, also due to a writing and processing time that embraces the entire span of years of his career itself. In the foreground, in addition to the numerous and brilliant characters, one of the protagonists is the Mantuan landscape which, not a simple background, becomes a true literary parameter which in different and significant ways affects the purposes and mechanisms of the novel

A CAD tool for limit cycle prediction in nonlinear systems

    No full text
The analysis of nonlinear systems can be greatly improved by the use of computer software. In this paper an interactive, user-friendly, graphically oriented toolbox based on Matlab is presented. Nonlinear systems whose nonlinearity is given by a relay are considered, and stability of free and forced oscillations is analyzed using the methods by Hamel, Tsypkin and Paquet. Nonlinear systems with polynomial nonlinearity are also treated and analyzed using Hopf's theorem in the frequency domain. The structure of the code is described and some illustrative examples are presented to validate the software capabilities

Can Raman spectroscopy detect cumulenic structures of linear carbon chains?

    No full text
The molecular and vibrational structures of cumulenic carbon chains are investigated by density functional theory calculations and compared with that of hydrogen-capped polyynes. The small value of bond length alternation (BLA) along the CC bonds sequence obtained by geometry optimization of uncapped Cn chains and vinyl-capped carbon chains confirms their cumulenic structure. It is demonstrated that for finite length chains the structural parameters are determined by end effects as far as the Peierls distortion, expected for very long molecules, does not occur. The Raman spectra of such molecules are calculated to verify the possibility of identifying markers of cumulenic chains by means of vibrational spectroscopy. As expected, the longitudinal mode consisting of the BLA oscillation, which is responsible for the strongest Raman transition of polyynes, becomes very weak for cumulenes; this behaviour is rationalized in terms of local polarizability derivatives. However, other longitudinal modes can be observed in the Raman spectra of Cn chains. The wavenumber behaviour and the optical activity of these modes are interpreted on the basis of the phonon dispersion branch of an ideally infinite cumulenic polymer. Raman intensities computed for chains of different lengths allow to conclude that cumulenic molecules could be detected and identified by means of Raman spectroscopy

The Industrial Building Heritage : first steps for the Damages Evaluation of Innocenti-Maserati Structural Plant

    No full text
The problems concerning the requalification of dismissed and, since many years, abandoned industrial plants and sites require different approaches and competencies. The authors have been involved in many different cases bounded to the industrial activities which have been developed during the early first half of the last century around Milano city, some of them have been firstly dismissed at the beginning of 80’s years. In many cases, problems concerning the land pollution, and the prior related costs of the land drainage have stopped the different necessary approaches regarding the assessment on the actual conservation and damage evaluation of existing abandoned buildings. Among these , works for land drainage and reclamation are planned, some in progress; in particular the “Innocenti-Maserati firm” is one of a major remaining industrial complex in the suburban district of Milano, with its 4 industrial hangars, completed dismissed and emptied out, and showing the steel bearing structures in their impressive shape of large dimension (figure 1). The paper focuses on the evaluation of the actual mechanical and physical properties of the structural elements, no less the modelling about one of the dismissed buildings; in particular the building under investigation is the oldest of the four. The paper illustrates a brief history of the Innocenti Milan Industrial Compound, the description of the structures, the on-site investigation and Laboratory tests for the evaluation of the overall distribution and degree of corrosion attack in steel structural elements

Come un seme. La conduzione del gruppo nel laboratorio di Teatro Sociale

    No full text
