The role of imagination in Bergman, Klein and Sartre
This thesis was submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy and was awarded by Brunel UniversityThis thesis provides an inter-disciplinary study of selected works by Ingmar Bergman. I explore how key concepts from Melanie Klein and Jean-Paul Sartre apply to the focus on characters in a state of heightened imagination; and the value placed on imagination in the construction of these films. This involves recognition of the way an active response from the viewer is encouraged.
Klein, Sartre and Bergman also attend to contextual factors that challenge any notion of subjectivity as sovereign and the power of imagination is frequently placed in a social context. All three figures develop their ideas within specialised fields drawing on the influence of others. Chapter 2 shows how Klein’s ideas relate to the influence of Freud before exploring how her work can be applied to Bergman’s films through the example of Wild Strawberries. Chapter 3 concentrates on Sartre’s early work, The Imaginary and considers how this is significant in relation to some of Sartre’s better-known philosophical ideas developed during and after the Second World War. These ideas will lead to an exploration of The Seventh Seal.
Chapters 4, 5, and 6 focus on three films from distinct parts of Bergman’s career: Summer with Monika, The Virgin Spring and Hour of the Wolf. In Chapter 4 this will be preceded by a brief over-view of three more films from the early part of Bergman’s career. These chapters explore how Kleinian and Sartrean ideas can be incorporated in close analysis, and alongside selected critical responses to the films. The analysis integrates key points from Klein and Sartre in a methodology specific to film studies. This will include analysis of cinematic elements such as camera work and lighting, and recognition of narrative structure and character developmen
Ingmar Bergman at 100 [Elektronisk resurs] : An Introduction
This book on Swedish film-maker Ingmar Bergman contains 18 new essays, representing parts of modern scholarship on the director’s work, mainly in the cinema. Most of the contributors to the book, some of them Swedish, others American or British, have written lavishly on Bergman previously, some even for decades. Bergman is one of the most written about artists in film history and his fame still lingers all over the world, as could be seen in the celebrations of his centenary in 2018. The book was specifically conceived back then with the aim to present fresh angles on his work, even if many essays also focus on traditional aspects of Bergman’s art, like philosophy and psychology. Thus, the book presents a number of essential subjects which have been hitherto somewhat absent from Bergman studies: like the director’s relations with Hollywood and transnational film production. It also focuses on Bergman’s highly sophisticated use of film music and his prominence as a writer of autobiographical literature and the inevitable intermedial relations to his films that this will encompass. Finally, it also addresses Bergman’s complex relations to Swedish politics. Many different approaches and methods are employed in the book in order to show that Bergman still is a relevant and important artist. The analyses generally focus on some of his most memorable films, like Smiles of a Summer Night, The Seventh Seal, Wild Strawberries, Persona and Fanny and Alexander, but also on rarer material like Hour of the Wolf, The Lie and Autumn Sonata

Most of the contributors—some Swedish, others American or British—have written extensively on Bergman before, some for decades. Bergman is one of the most written-about artists in film history and his fame still lingers all over the world, as was seen in the celebrations of his centenary in 2018. The book was specifically conceived at that time with the aim of presenting fresh angles on his work, although several chapters also focus on traditional aspects of Bergman’s art, such as philosophy and psychology. Ingmar Bergman: An Enduring Legacy thus addresses a number of essential topics which have not featured in Bergman studies before, such as the director’s relations with Hollywood and transnational film production. It also deals at length with Bergman’s highly sophisticated use of film music and with his prominence as a writer of autobiographical literature, as well as with the intermedial relations to his films that this perspective inevitably entails. Finally, the book addresses Bergman’s complex relations to Swedish politics. Many different approaches and methods are employed in the book in order to show that Bergman remains a relevant and important artist. Work-related outcomes in randomised placebo-controlled pain trials: a systematic review and meta-analysis
Background: Chronic painful conditions have an important influence on the ability to work. Work-related outcomes, however, are not commonly reported in publications on trials investigating the treatment of chronic painful conditions. We aim to provide an overview of the reporting of work-related outcomes in such trials and investigate the relationship between work-related outcomes and pain outcomes. Methods: We conducted a systematic literature search in PubMed with the aim of identifying randomised placebo-controlled clinical trials investigating treatments for chronic painful conditions or rheumatic diseases that also reported on work-related outcomes. Methodological study quality was assessed with the Oxford Quality Scale (OQS). Meta-analyses were conducted for the outcomes of interference with work and number of patients with at least 30% reduction in pain intensity (30% pain responders). The correlation between work-related and pain outcomes was investigated with regression analyses. Results: We included 31 publications reporting on 27 datasets from randomised placebo-controlled trials (with a total of 11,434 study participants) conducted in chronic painful or rheumatic diseases and reporting on work-related outcomes. These 31 publications make up only about 0.2% of all publications on randomised placebo-controlled trials in such conditions. The methodological quality of the included studies was high; only nine studies scored less than four (out of a maximum five) points on the OQS. Sixteen different work-related outcomes were reported on in the studies. Of 25 studies testing for the statistical significance of changes in work-related outcomes over the course of the trials, 14 (56%) reported a significant improvement; the others reported non-significant changes. Eight studies reported data on both interference with work and 30% pain responders: meta analyses demonstrated similar, statistically significant improvements in both these outcomes with active therapy compared to placebo and regression analysis showed that these outcomes were correlated. Conclusions: Despite the importance of pain as a reason for decreased ability to work, work-related outcomes are reported in substantially less than 1% of publications on placebo-controlled trials in chronic painful and rheumatic diseases. Ingmar Bergman and the Hour of the Wolf – Shifting from “lumen opacatum” to the Expressionist Scream. In Wild Strawberries/Smultronstället (1957), but especially in Hour of the Wolf/Vargtimmen (1968), Ingmar Bergman resignifies the metaphorical heritage of the German Expressionism. The figure of the false death, the frightening image of the horologe without hands presented in a Gothic geometry, the reminiscences of the dead father, the intellectual in a frame of accumulated diagonals, the inexorable dying and the promised death are some extensive directions of this study. If the characters in these two films live in a morbid dimension of the “borrowed” time and their shadows emerge from a tenebrous world, an important principle remains the “non-organic life of things”, coupled with the process of “lyrical abstraction” (G. Deleuze). The German expressionist directors yearn nostalgically to relive the golden age by capturing melancholic landscapes. Therefore, Bergman’s expressionist techniques are transformed and combined with the surreal atmosphere or the stylized realism, a context in which the apocalyptic language of the painter Johan Borg (similar to that of August Strindberg in the poem The Wolves are Howling) reveals the ability of the expressionist spirit in amplifying and recombining his thoughts/thinking
Translating the Author-Function: The (Re)Narration of Christa Wolf
Narrative theory continues to offer new perspectives on the intercultural transfer of texts. Embedded in new narratives, the text opens up to new interpretations, resulting in the loss and acquisition of meaning. The writer’s persona or author-function (Foucault 1977) is also renegotiated by cultural transfer, as it is cumulatively and dynamically constructed through readings of an author’s texts and literary or biographical contexts. The translated author-function may differ considerably from the domestic, and may also interact with it as in the case of the East German writer Christa Wolf, whose international author-function has served for contrast (if not conflict) with her reception in the German Democratic Republic and united Germany. This was particularly marked during the 1990s, when revelations about Wolf’s political activity led to censure by the German media and literati. This paper demonstrates how the translation of Wolf’s texts and the construction of her international author-function have renegotiated her position within her domestic literary field
