    An Analysis of Students’ Reading Comprehension at an Islamic Institute in Jambi

    This study examines each reading comprehension indicator and reading comprehension in general. Forty-five first-semester students of the English Education Department at Public Islamic Institute Jambi, Indonesia, which comprised of twenty-one males and twenty-four females voluntarily participated in this study. They were purposively selected as the sample of the research. This study used six indicators of reading comprehension and reading comprehension in general data. The descriptive quantitative approach was employed in this study as the research methodology. The descriptive statistic of SPSS 23 was applied to analyze the mean and standard deviation of six reading comprehension and reading comprehension in general. The criteria referenced interpretation and norm-referenced interpretation investigated interval of six reading comprehension and reading comprehension in general. The result of descriptive statistics and criteria referenced interpretation, and norm-referenced interpretation analysis showed five reading comprehension indicators in terms of author purpose, topic details, reference, and vocabulary in context in moderate criteria, except the main idea in which in high criteria. The reading comprehension was in moderate criteria similar to five reading comprehension indicators. Therefore, English lecturers hope to select an appropriate strategy and be well prepared to teach reading

    Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

    THE STUDENTS’ PROBLEMS IN IDENTIFYING /k/ AND /s/ PHONEMES AT STAIN KERINCI

    Jurnal ini ditulis untuk  mengetahui masalah yang dihadapi siswa dalam mengidentifikasikan bunyi /k/ dan /s/ dalam Bahasa Inggris di STAIN Kerinci. Penelitian ini adalah penelitian deskriptif qualitative. Data penelitian ini adalah hasil tes pronunciation dan  wawancara dengan mahasiswa. Hasil penelitian deskriptif ini menunjukkan bahwa mahasiswa mahasiswa menemukan kendala dalam mengidentifikasikan bunyi /k/ dan bunyi /s/. Mereka beranggapan bahawa hanya huruf k yang diikuti oleh vokal saja yang dilafalkan /k/ sedangkan huruf c yang diikuti oleh oleh huruf h tidak dilafalkan /k/. Kemudian untuk bunyi /s/ yang diawali dengan huruf /s/ tidak dilafalkan /s/ dan juga kendala dalam mengidentikasikan bunyi disebabkan oleh kurangnya pengetahuan siswa tentang cara mengidentifikasikan bunyi dalam bahasa inggris, serta adanya pengaruh dari bahasa ibu meraka ketika melafalkan bunyi dalam bahasa inggris.Jurnal ini ditulis untuk  mengetahui masalah yang dihadapi siswa dalam mengidentifikasikan bunyi /k/ dan /s/ dalam Bahasa Inggris di STAIN Kerinci.     Artikel ini ditulis untuk  mengetahui masalah yang dihadapi dosen dalam mengaplikasikan communicative language teaching dalam pengajaran reading di STAIN Kerinci. Penelitian ini adalah penelitian deskriptif qualitative. Data penelitian ini adalah hasil observasi dan  wawancara dengan dosen. Hasil penelitian deskriptif ini menunjukkan bahwa dosen telah menggunakan indikator dari communicative language teaching dalam mengajar reading. Walaupun dosen sudah menggunakan indikator dari communicative language teaching, namun mereka masih menghadapi masalah. Masalah mereka berhubungan dengan masalah dalam menemukan materi dari internet, masalah dalam menggunakan media mengajar, dan perbedaan kemampuan mahasiswa dalam speaking.     Variations on the Author

    “Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

    Modifying and Assessing Validity and Reliability of Motivation for Reading Questionnaire

    This study aimed to describe the modification process and validity and reliability assessment of instruments regarding motivations for the reading questionnaire (MRQ) for measuring reading motivation of junior high school students in Jambi, Indonesia. Eighty-three students participated in this study, selected through the respondent who returned the questionnaires. The corrected items' total correlation of SPSS 23 was applied to examine the validity and reliability of MRQ. The corrected items' total correlation of SPSS statistical analyses showed that all of the 53 modification items of MRQ were valid and reliable. It indicated that all 53 items of MRQ were appropriate for measuring the reading motivation of junior high school students in Jambi, Indonesia. It can provide a future studies screening tool for measuring the students' reading motivation

    Artikel ini ditulis untuk  mengetahui bagaimana masrakat sungai menyapa orang-orang yang memiliki hubungan pertalian darah dengan nya dalam kehidupan sehari-hari. Penelitian ini adalah penelitian deskriptif qualitative. Data penelitian ini adalah hasil observasi dan  wawancara dengan subject penelitian yang merupakan penduduk tetap Desa Sungai Liuk. Hasil penelitian deskriptif ini menunjukkan bahwa masyarakat Sungai Liuk memiliki sapaan yang berbeda terhadap orang-orang yang memiliki pertalian darah denga mereka, mulai dari bapak (abak) sampai ke cucu (grand son and grand dughter). Sapaan yang digunakan harus sesuai dengan hubungan pertalian darah yang ada serta status didalam pertalian darah itu sendiiri

    The Implementation of Reading Text Strategies in Enhancing EFL Learners Vocabularies: A Case of One Islamic Higher Education in Jambi, Indonesia

    The purpose of this study was to reveal the lecturerÔÇÖs strategy in enhancing studentsÔÇÖ English vocabularies in the process of teaching and learning in the classroom. 3 English lecturers who have ever taught English for Academic Purposes (EAP) in non-English department were involved in this study. The data were collected through semi-structure interview. Thematic analysis was applied for analysis the participantsÔÇÖ interview result. Finding of this study show that; first. the participants used selected reading text as a media of enhancing students vocabularies. Second, the strategy was implemented through small group discussion and pair work to make students actively participated in sharing the knowledge. Third, the participants evaluated the studentsÔÇÖ understanding of reading text strategy by asking them to work individually without any assistance from the group members ┬á┬áThis study recommended that the findings can be a basis consideration in enhancing studentsÔÇÖ vocabularies in the process of teaching and learning

    Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

    We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature.
