Yangoz, Sefika Tugba/0000-0001-9711-2620Background: Effective haemodialysis management is crucial, and behavioural change interventions are essential for good haemodialysis self-management. However, no study explores the effects of Watson's theory such as the humanistic approach to behavioural change in haemodialysis.Aims: To evaluate the effects of motivational interviewing and an education programme based on Watson's theory on adherence to treatment, satisfaction and health-related quality of life (HRQOL) on haemodialysis. Methods: This study was conducted in Turkey. Intervention group received four sessions of motivational interviewing and an education programme based on Watson's theory, and the control group received routine care. The primary outcomes were adherence to fluid intake, diet and medication, attendance at haemodialysis sessions, satisfaction and HRQOL. The secondary outcomes were laboratory parameters. Results: Participants were randomly assigned to the intervention (n = 32) or the control group (n = 28). There were statistically significant between-group differences in adherence to fluid intake, diet and medication, and the kidney disease burden sub-dimension of HRQOL, with medium to large effect sizes. There was no difference in laboratory parameters. Participants showed high levels of satisfaction with this programme. Conclusions: This study provides evidence for nurses regarding Watson's theory-based programme in a haemodialysis population. Results will help nurses to develop and practice customised effective interventions for haemodialysis. The author(s) disclosed receipt of the following financial support for the research, authorship, and/or publication of this article: This study was funded by the Scientific Research Projects Coordination Unit with the Project number 'TDK-2018-3279' at Akdeniz University in Turkey.Akdeniz University in Turkey [TDK-2018-3279

Nanoencapsulation by electrospinning to improve stability and water solubility of carotenoids extracted from tomato peels

    No full text
The current study demonstrated the electrospinning technique to stabilize the carotenoids. Gelatin nanofibers containing the carotenoids extracted from tomato peel (TP) were successfully fabricated with above 90% encapsulation efficiency by electrospinning. SEM analysis revealed that the extract-loaded fibers exhibit similar morphology as the neat fibers with a bead-free, smooth, and homogeneously-distributed morphology. Thermal stability of the extract was improved by nanoencapsulation. FTIR spectra showed that the TP extract could be compatibly entrapped into the gelatin fibers. Compared to non-encapsulated extract, the encapsulated one inside gelatin fibers had better retention of lycopene and antioxidant activity during 14-days storage. More interestingly, the water solubility of the carotenoid extract was highly enhanced compared to non-encapsulated one. By this study, it was realized that nanoencapsulation by electrospinning is an effective way to stabilize carotenoids and improve their water solubility, therefore it is promising to use them in food processing, especially including aqueous food matrix

In this study, the antiproliferative effects of Pseudopediastrum boryanum isolated and cultured from Tokat Ye & scedil;il & imath;rmak River benthic habitats were investigated with in-vitro experiments. The Anticancer activity of algae extracts was tested in cancer cell lines using the BrdU cell proliferation ELISA method. Vero (African Green Monkey Kidney Tumour Cells) and HeLa (Human Uterine Carcinoma Cells) were examined in concentrations of 100, 250 and 500 mu g mL-1.-1 . As a result of antiproliferative tests, P. boryanum was found to have effective anticancer properties. P. boryanum extract concentrations of 250 and 500 mu g mL-1-1 had a significant cytotoxic effect on Vero and HeLa cell lines after 24 hours. According to the results, P. boryanum is estimated to be a good option for quantitative pharmaceutical analyses and could be evaluated in the pharmaceutical industry.ACKNOWLEDGMENT The author thanks Prof.Dr. Koksal Pabuccu for his help in the diagnosis of algae species

A New Antecedent of Career Commitment: Work to Family Positive Enhancement

    No full text
AbstractThe importance of intellectual capital as an element of human capital motivates organizations to search the elements of work - life balance that employees consider important. For this purpose, considering career management as one of the human resources management tools, employees’ commitment to their careers can be expressed as a factor that may be examined in retention. Employees committed to their career perform higher than others are not committed to their career. Therefore studying career commitment premises in work – family balance can be considered as an original subject for organizational researchers. In this research, positive synergy from work to family is studied as one of the premises of career commitment. Positive effect from work to family is studied with 2 variables: work to family enrichment and work to family positive spillover. According to findings, identity dimension of career commitment is influenced by the affect dimension and capital dimension of enrichment and by the affect dimension of positive spillover. The variance in the dimension of planning and resilience can be explained by the change in the level of spillover with negative direction

Effects of Fibre Reinforcement on Liquefaction Behaviour of Poorly Graded Sands

AbstractThe objective of this study is to evaluate the liquefaction behaviour of fibre reinforced sand concerning the lower and upper limits of medium relative densities of 50% and 70%, respectively. A systematic testing program of the stress-controlled cyclic triaxial tests was performed on saturated sand samples with and without fibre reinforcements under undrained conditions. The confining pressure for all test cases was 100kPa reflecting the actual overburden pressure in field conditions. The effect of parameters such as fibre content (0.25%, 0.50%, and 1%) and fibre length (6 mm and 12 mm) on the liquefaction behaviour of unreinforced and reinforced specimens was studied. Upon increasing the fibre content and fibre length, the number of loading cycles leading to liquefaction increased. Pore water pressure and shear strain curves are obtained for the fibre reinforced medium dense sands. Furthermore, the boundaries presented in the literature on the sands are shown in comparison with the results of fibre reinforced sands of this study. As a conclusion, the outcomes of this study are useful to develop insight into the behaviour of clean and fibre-reinforced medium dense sands under seismic loading conditions. Based on the test results, it was found that the number of loading cycles has significant influence on the generation of excess pore pressure

    No full text
Background: In pattern-specific scoliosis exercises and bracing, the corrective treatment plan differs according to different curve patterns. There are a limited number of studies investigating the reliability of the commonly used classifications systems. Objective: To test the reliability of the augmented Lehnert-Schroth (ALS) classification and the Rigo classification. Methods: X-rays and posterior photographs of 45 patients with scoliosis were sent by the first author to three clinicians twice at 1-week intervals. The clinicians classified images according to the ALS and Rigo classifications, and the data were analysed using SPSS V-16. Intraclass correlation coefficients (ICCs) and standard error measurement (SEM) were calculated to evaluate the inter-and intra-observer reliability. Results: The inter-observer ICC values were 0.552 (ALS), 0.452 (Rigo) for X-ray images and 0.494 (ALS), 0.518 (Rigo) for the photographs. The average intra-observer ICC value was 0.720 (ALS), 0.581 (Rigo) for the X-ray images and 0.726 (ALS) and 0.467 (Rigo) for the photographs. Conclusions: The results of our study indicate moderate inter-observer reliability for X-ray images using the ALS classification and clinical photographs using the Rigo classification. Intra-observer reliability was moderate to good for X-ray images and clinical photographs using the ALS classification and poor to moderate for X-ray and clinical photographs using the Rigo classification
