Deep Learning Benchmarks and Datasets for Social Media Image Classification for Disaster Response
The crisis image benchmark dataset consists data from several data sources such as CrisisMMD, data from AIDR and Damage Multimodal Dataset (DMD). The purpose of this work was to develop a consolidated dataset, create non-overlapping train/dev/test set and provide a benchmark results for the community.
We propose new datasets for disaster type detection, and informativeness classification, and damage severity assessment. Moreover, we relabel existing publicly available datasets for new tasks. We identify exact- and near-duplicates to form non-overlapping data splits, and finally consolidate them to create larger datasets. In our extensive experiments, we benchmark several state-of-the-art deep learning models and achieve promising results. We release our datasets and models publicly, aiming to provide proper baselines as well as to spur further research in the crisis informatics community.

Bifurcation Analysis of Homogeneous-Heterogeneous Combustion
We present theory and comprehensive bifurcation analysis of thermally coupled homogeneous-heterogeneous combustion of propane and methane in short monolith, fibermat or gauze type reactors with a focus on the dependence of the ignition, extinction, hysteresis, double and boundary limit loci on the various design and operating parameters. We analyze the impact of inlet fuel mole fraction, inlet temperature, residence time and channel hydraulic radius on the relative position of the homogeneous and catalytic ignition and extinction points and identify the parameter regions in which either catalytic or homogeneous reaction dominates. We also identify the regions in which catalytic ignition leads either to an intermediate branch on which the homogeneous reaction rate is negligible or directly to a high conversion and temperature state thereby facilitating homogeneous ignition. For the case of methane oxidation, we examine both the lean and rich feeds with the operating pressure as the bifurcation variable and compare the predicted results with available experimental data and numerical simulations using detailed CFD models.
We then study the impact of the Lewis number, 〖Le〗_f (thermal diffusivity of the reaction mixture to the molecular diffusivity of the limiting reactant) and the Peclet numbers on the maximum temperature attained for coupled homogeneous-heterogeneous combustion process in a parallel plate reactor using one, two and three-dimensional models. For the case of 1-D models, we find that the maximum temperature never exceeds the adiabatic value for physically consistent boundary conditions. For 2-D models, we find that for 〖Le〗_f1, contrary to some literature claims, the peak temperature never exceeds the adiabatic value, though the temperature can be non-monotontic across the channel. We show that 3-D solutions can bifurcate either from 1-D or 2-D solutions irrespective of the value of the Lewis number. The implications of these observations for catalyst and process design in systems in which both homogeneous and catalytic reactions occur are discussed.Portions of this document appear in: Alam, Imran, David H. Shah Alam on BBC Asian Network. How to get Bangladeshi men talking about mental health. 11 May 2021. BBC
Bangladeshi men have been hit hard by the pandemic – in terms of higher death rates compared to other communities, shut down industries and job losses. But with lockdown easing, many fear that the impact of the pandemic on their mental health may be overlooked.
Imran Khan lost his father earlier this year to coronavirus. While he reached out to this GP for support, other Bangladeshi men are less likely to do so, says psychologist Shah Alam. He believes Islam could play a key role in getting men to open up and reducing the stigma around mental health issues. Imam Sheikh Abdullah Hasan has been exploring this – he has been providing mental health toolkits to more than 200 imams and scholars around the UK
Rate-latency optimization for NB-IoT with adaptive resource unit configuration in uplink transmission
Narrowband Internet of Things (NB-IoT) is a cellular IoT communication technology standardized by 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) for supporting massive machine type communication and its deployment can be realized by a simple firmware upgrade on existing long term evolution (LTE) networks. The NB-IoT requirements in terms of energy efficiency, achievable rates, latency, extended coverage, make the resource allocation, in a limited bandwidth, even a more challenging problem w.r.t. to legacy LTE. The allocation, done with subcarrier (SC) granularity in NB-IoT, should maintain adequate performance for the devices while keeping the power consumption as low as possible. Nevertheless, the optimal solution of the resource allocation problem is typically unfeasible since nonconvex, NP-hard and combinatorial because of the use of binary variables. In this article, after the formulation of the optimization problem, we study the resource allocation approach for NB-IoT networks aiming to analyze the tradeoff between rate and latency. The proposed suboptimal algorithm allocates radio resource (i.e., SCs) and transmission power to the NB-IoT devices for the uplink transmission and the performance is compared in terms of latency, rate, and power. By comparing the proposed allocation to a conventional round robin (RR) and to a brute-force approach, we can observe the advantages of the formulated allocation problem and the limited loss of the suboptimal solution. The proposed algorithm outperforms the RR by a factor 2 in terms of spectral efficiency and, moreover, the study includes techniques that reduce the dropped packets from 29% to 1.6%
