Inverse Wave Spectral Problem with Discontinuous Wave Speed
The inverse problem for the Sturm{Liouville operator with complex pe- riodic potential and positive discontinuous coe±cients on the axis is studied. The main characteristics of the fundamental solutions and the spectrum of the operator are studied. The formulation of the inverse problem and a constructive procedure for its solution are given. The uniqueness theorem of the inverse problem is proven.The paper was finished during the time R.F. Efendiev visited Universite de Nantes as an invited professor. The author wishes to thank Prof. A. Evolution equations arising in the modelling of life sciences
This book deals with the modeling, analysis and simulation of problems arising in the life sciences, and especially in biological processes. The models and findings presented result from intensive discussions with microbiologists, doctors and medical staff, physicists, chemists and industrial engineers and are based on experimental data. They lead to a new class of degenerate density-dependent nonlinear reaction-diffusion convective equations that simultaneously comprise two kinds of degeneracy: porous-medium and fast-diffusion type degeneracy. To date, this class is still not clearly understood in the mathematical literature and thus especially interesting. The author both derives realistic life science models and their above-mentioned governing equations of the degenerate types and systematically studies these classes of equations. In each concrete case well-posedness, the dependence of solutions on boundary conditions reflecting some properties of the environment, and the large-time behavior of solutions are investigated and in some instances also studied numerically
Effective behavior of composite structures made of thermoelastic constituents with cylindrical periodicity
In this paper an extension of the asymptotic expansion homogenization technique is proposed for predicting the effective behavior of composite structures exhibiting periodicity with respect to cylindrical coordinates. The composite structures are made of thermoelastic constituents. Effective thermoelastic properties of composites with periodicity in cylindrical coordinates
The aim of this work is to study composites that present cylindrical periodicity in the microstructure. The effective thermomechanical properties of these composites are identified using a modified version of the asymptotic expansion homogenization method, which accounts for unit cells with shell shape. The microscale response is also shown. Several numerical examples demonstrate the use of the proposed approach, which is validated by other micromechanics methods. © 2012 Elsevier Ltd. An Adaptive Generalized Multiscale Discontinuous Galerkin Method for High-Contrast Flow Problems
In this paper, we develop an adaptive generalized multiscale discontinuous Galerkin method (GMsDGM) for a class of high-contrast flow problems and derive a priori and a posteriori error estimates for the method. Based on the a posteriori error estimator, we develop an adaptive enrichment algorithm for our GMsDGM and prove its convergence. The adaptive enrichment algorithm gives an automatic way to enrich the approximation space in regions where the solution requires more basis functions, which are shown to perform well compared with a uniform enrichment. We also discuss an approach that adaptively selects multiscale basis functions by correlating the residual to multiscale basis functions (cf. [S. S. Chen, D. L. Donoho, and M. A. Saunders, SIAM Rev., 43 (2001), pp. 129-159]). The proposed error indicators are L-based and can be inexpensively computed, which makes our approach efficient. Narva kujutamine nõukogude aja teejuhis
The material analysed in the article consists of guidebooks on Narva published in the Soviet era: “Narva. Guidebook” (1960) by Evgeny Krivosheev; “Narva” (1960) by Silvi Kihu; “Narva. Guidebook” (1967) by Evgeny Krivosheev and Konstantin Mikhailov; “Narva. Guidebook” (1981) by Evgeny Krivosheev; “Narva. Guidebook” (1990) by Eldar Efendiev. The focus of attention is on the ideological functions of guidebooks. Under the influence of official ideology and historiography, the texts of Soviet guidebooks on Narva modelled the historical narrative about the city and created an image of Narva, which experienced a second birth after 1944. The image of Narva in the guidebooks splits into two images: historical (ancient, old) Narva and modern (Soviet, socialist, young, new) Narva. These two Narvas are dissimilar to each other: we cannot recognise the ancient city in the image of modern Narva. The history of the Soviet-era Narva guidebook can be seen as a history of attempts to resolve this contradiction or to escape from it. The ideological task of the Soviet guide to Narva was to justify the history of the city after 1940. The image of ancient Narva fades before the image of modern Narva. Actually, the guidebook becomes a guide to the achievements of socialist Narva. It can be said that the Soviet guidebooks on Narva are a vivid example of the ideological pressure of the epoch on the author of the text. However, the Soviet era was not always unified; the loosening of Soviet ideology in the 1980s affected Narva guidebooks as well
Line managers as a socio-professional group
The article is dedicated to the analysis of line managers’ role and position in modern Russian business society, as well as the membership of line managers in the socio — professional group of managers. Line managers were considered as the owners of specific capital
(physical, human, social and administrative), distinctive for managers’ group. The author
focuses on administrative capital as the most important management authority indicator.
The empirical part of the work was based on the results of a standardized survey of 1116 line
managers in 400 organizations from 11 industries. The results indicated that modern Russian managers have high levels of physical, human, social capital, and, moreover, quite a
high level of administrative capital that is close to middle and top levels. Line managers
have significant authority in terms of control, organization, and planning, as well as fairly
high power in HR and finances compared to the results of previous studies. The results
demonstrated the evolution of a line manager from supervisor to a full-fledged manager
with a higher level of education, salary, authority, and social status. Therefore, line managers
can be assigned to the socio-professional group of managers and line managers should be
included in research on social and managerial topics. Moreover, they should be investigated
as an independent phenomenon. Line managers can become a fundamental potential in the
struggle for a competitive advantage during a crisis and an unstable economy, they deserve
