Rumer Godden:International and Intermodern Storyteller
From 1929 to 1997, Rumer Godden published more than 60 books, including novels, biographies, children's books, and poetry; this is the first collection devoted to this important transnational writer. Focusing on Godden's writing from the 1930s onward, the contributors uncover the breadth and variety of the literary landscape on display in works such as Black Narcissus, The Lady and the Unicorn, A Fugue in Time, and The River. Often drawing on her own experiences living in India and Britain, Godden establishes a diverse narrative topography that allows her to engage with issues related to her own uncertain position as an author representing such nomadic Others as gypsies, or taking up the displacements brought about by international conflict. Recognizing that studies of the transnational must consider the condition of enforced and elected exile within the changing political and cultural borders of postcolonial nations, the contributors position Godden with respect to different and overlapping fields of inquiry: modern literary history; colonial, postcolonial, and transnational studies; inter-media studies; and children's literature. Taken together, the essays in this volume demonstrate the richness and variety of Godden's writing and render the myriad ways in which Godden is an important critical presence in mid-twentieth-century fiction.</p
Diffusion of sediment in a non-uniform flow field
The suspension of sediment particles by turbulent eddy diffusion in a non- uniform flow region was studied, using the convective-diffusion equation as a mathematical model. A simplified form of the equation for which mixing characteristics and flow velocities 'vere assumed uniform was found to accurately describe the sediment concentration profiles which had been measured in a 24-foot long flume. The experiments also showed that turbulent mixing was more uniform than predicted by existing theories, and that it depended on the geometric characteristics of the mobile, wavy bed. Although diffusivities in the non- uniform region tended towards uniformity with downstream distance the vertical diffusive transport rate was related to depth as a power law function. An expression with analytic support was derived for the diffusion coefficients as functions of sediment and hydraulic variables
A Study of the Thermal Decomposition of CH 3 131 I in a Gas Flow in the Presence of "Fizkhmin" TM Granulated Materials
Abstract Thermal decomposition of a volatile organic compound of radioactive iodine, methyl iodide CH3 131 I, in a gas flow in the presence of various modifications of "Fizkhmin" TM granulated materials based on silica gel impregnated with d-elements was studied. Under comparable experimental conditions, 97% -99% decomposition of CH3 131 I is achieved at ~770˚C without sorbents and at ~540˚C and ~465˚C in the presence of straight silica gel and of the material based on it, impregnated with compounds of Ni or its mixture with Cu (8 -10 wt%), respectively
The Shadow Economy and Morals: A Note
If the established rules are obeyed spontaneously in an economy, this increases economic efficiency since the uncertainties, monitoring costs and incentive problems induced by opportunism can be avoided. Opportunism will be increasedby increasing the incentives for unlawful behaviour, however, and a slight increase in these incentives might cause a cumulative and self-nourishing breakdown of morals. The dangers of the growing shadow economy are louring here
GENERALIZED VALENCE BOND THEORY OF NUCLEAR SPIN-SPIN INTERACTION IN MOLECULES; APPLICATION TO AND SPIN COUPLINGS
H. M. McConnell, J Chem. Phys., 24, 460 (1956). G. A. Williams and H. S. Gutowsky, J. Chem. Phys., 30, 717 (1959).Author Institution: Department of Chemistry, Columbia UniversityExpressions for nuclear spin-spin coupling constants (J) in molecules are obtained with a generalized valence bond (v.b.) function and second-order perturbation theory. Both electron-spin and electron-orbital contributions are included in the formulation. For evaluating the contact and dipolar spin terms, a modification of the usual Rumer-Pauling rules is developed. “Long-range” approximations for J in the v.b. scheme are introduced and the required integrals are calculated with suitable atomic orbitals. It is found that earlier of some of these integrals are considerably in error. Applications to coupling constants involving and nuclei are given for typical systems. The v.b. expressions for J derived here are more general in that all terms besides the “contact” term are considered. Further, the present theory is applicable to directly bonded as well as non-bonded nuclei
Становлення та розвиток національної системи дошкільного музичного виховання в Україні
In the article the author made an analysis of heritage of famous Ukrainian artists, public figures and educators, pedagogues and psychologists musicians of eighteenth and twentieth century, different issues concerning the impact of music and music education on the child's personality; organization of musical education in preschool institutions. Formation and development of a national system of preschool music education in Ukraine related to activities and views on music education of famous Ukrainian artists of XVIII-XIX centuries, namely Skovoroda and Shevchenko.
The issue of implementation of different kinds of music in kindergartens at the state level has been discussed since the mid-nineteenth century.Artistic, educational and developmental potential of music in training and education of preschool children was recognized. This process was greatly influenced by Soviet public figures and teachers of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries (V. Odoyevskyy, S. Rusova, M. Sventytska, A. Simonovic, E. Tyhyeyeva, K. Ushinsky).
Ukrainian musicians and educators of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries (V. Verhovinets, M. Lysenko, J. Steppe, K. Stetsenko, D. Leontovych, B. Jaworski et al.) made significant contribution to developing the national musical education of preschool children, musical development and publication of manuals.
The development of theoretical and methodological principles on the national level introduced in the early and mid-twentieth century influenced preschool musical education, as well as musical-rhythmic system of education (N. Alexandrova, N. Rumer, B. Hryner, A. Konorovoyi) and music education (N. Vyetluhinoyi, D. Kabalevskoho, M. Palavandishvili, O. Radynovoyi, M. Rumer, V. Shatskoyi, S. Sholomovych etc.), who studied development of children’s musical perception, psychological and pedagogical means of influence and conditions of the basics of musical culture, contents, methods and forms of musical development, education of preschool children and more.
A significant impact on design and development of the concept of musical education of preschool children was made by psychologists (L. Vygotsky, V. Romenets, S. Naumenko, K. Tarasova). They noted that the objectives of musical education of young children is forming their aesthetic attitude to music and musical activities.
