Rewilding Victoria: remembering and restoring nature in the city

    No full text
To know what is, you must know what was. This is the simple truth that J.B. MacKinnon explores in his new book The once and future world: nature as it is, as it was, as it could be. The natural world, he argues, has been lost not only to human rapaciousness, but also through a great forgetting. MacKinnon calls on us to examine the nature of the past in order to "rewild" the earth in the future, "The history of nature is not only a lament," he writes."It is also an invitation to envision another world." MacKinnon is the author or co-author of four books of nonfiction, including The 100-mile diet (with Alisa Smith), a bestseller widely recognized as a catalyst of the local foods movement, His writing in print and online has won more than a dozen national and international awards, including Canada's highest prize for literary nonfiction. MacKinnon lives in Vancouver, Canada.Lansdowne Lecture SeriesFacultyUnreviewe

    False Idyll

    No full text
A provocative essay awaits those who peruse prize-winning author J.B. MacKinnon\u27s article, False Idyll. MacKinnon posits that many of us romanticize nature as a sacred place ( one of succor and comfort) overlooking that most places visited have been tamed by humans. The absence of real wildness (predators that can kill us) creates an imaginary connection with nature instead of a tangible one. We settle for occasional visits to such sanctuaries and see little purpose in returning to a deeper and more risky engagement:\u27 Thus seeing only nurture in nature reinforces the concept that we are apart and above it

Catharine MacKinnon e o sexo como dominação

    No full text
The article discusses the work of feminist legal scholar Catharine MacKinnon and, in particular, her radical rejection of the liberal notion of “consent”. For the author, sexuality is an expression of male dominance; indeed, it reveals itself as “eroticization of domination”. In such society, there is no possibility of autonomous agency for women. We must undo the work of the internalization of dominant values, so that a genuine feminine consciousness can emerge. This is the backdrop of her controversial views on rape, pornography, prostitution or abortion. The article concludes that, while illuminating important aspects of domination, she simplifies in excess the discussion of autonomy in social agency.O artigo discute a obra da jurista feminista Catharine MacKinnon e, em particular, sua recusa radical à noção liberal de “consentimento”.

    The resurrection of the author

81 leaves ; 29 cmIncludes abstract.Includes bibliographical references (leaves 76-81).In The Resurrection of the Author, Daniel Trainor-McKinnon supports a form of intentionalism by arguing that intentions and meaning are metaphysically separate from artworks. This form of intentionalism is what he calls externalist intentionalism, which is the theory of art interpretation that holds that intentions are often relevant (though not always necessary) to understanding artworks. Because it holds this, externalist intentionalism is an adequate response to both the anti-intentionalist objection that artists' intentions are inadmissible in critical examinations of artworks because they are external to those artworks, and the neo-Wittgensteinian intentionalist claim that intentions are internal properties of artworks. A consequent study of allusion shows that some features of art are dependent on intentions for their existence and correct interpretation, while a concluding section examines externalist intentionalism's compatibility with evaluative criticism

A radical guide to feminist thought and feminist law: Catharine A. Mackinnon

Historically, as of many intellectual currents, feminism is also divided into many different branches. Many different points of view like liberal feminism, Marxist feminism, radical feminism, difference feminism are situated under this roof. Catharine A. MacKinnon is the first theorist and leading representative of radical feminist current. According to the author, gender is the main distinction factor of the dominance relations in a patriarchal society. For this reason, liberal feminism, Marxist feminism and difference feminism cannot adequately explain the dominance that women are exposed to and cannot come up with adequate means to resolve those issues. MacKinnon, in line with her analyses, proposes to ban pornography, to adopt woman’s point of view in determining culpability in rape cases, to ban prostitution but to not criminalize women, to treat sexual harassment as gender discrimination and to provide meaningful access to abortion to women

Mackinnon en el palacio de justicia: un análisis radical de sentencias de la corte constitucional sobre sexualidad

This article is a reflection on how Catharine MacKinnon’s radical feminist theory can be used as a methodological tool to analyze every day topics. Specifically, this text sheds light on relevant gender issues that had not been discussed earlier in Colombian Constitutional Court decisions on female sexuality. In order to do this, the article proposes a simplified conception of MacKinnon’s theory that is then used to analyze cases on media and advertising, sexual education and women who visit men’s prisons. In conclusion the author argues that the expropriation of women’s sexuality is normalized in society. Understanding the Presence, Diet, and Habitat Attributes of River Otters (Lontra canadensis) on the Slocan River, British Columbia

Recreation, Fish and WildlifeOnce prevalent in many waterways across British Columbia (BC), river otter populations have seen a decrease due to trapping, development, and pollution since the beginning of the 20th Century (Mowry et al. 2011). Although there are data available on coastal studies of river otter populations, details on river otter diet and populations in BC’s West Kootenay region is largely unknown (Mackenzie 2013). During January and February of 2020, colleague Tiffany Muncaster and I surveyed sections of a 14-kilometer reach of river from Lemon Creek to the community of Winlaw, BC, to determine the presence of river otter through non-invasive observation survey techniques. I collected presence/non-detection data on latrine sites, tracks, slide sites, and sightings based on visual evidence. Signs detected along all transects included tracks, slides, dens, latrine sites, and river otter sightings. Based on findings from the surveyed areas, the Slocan River appears to be good habitat for river otters. Tracks were frequently detected along both sides of the river and a total of 10 dens were observed throughout the transects. A sighting of three river otters near the community of Appledale directly confirmed presence and further supports claims of favourable habitat characteristics present in the area

Mediation Analysis with Survival Outcomes: Accelerated Failure Time Versus Proportional Hazards Models

    No full text
Objective: Survival time is an important type of outcome variable in treatment research. Currently, limited guidance is available regarding performing mediation analyses with survival outcomes, which generally do not have normally distributed errors, and contain unobserved (censored) events. We present considerations for choosing an approach, using a comparison of semi-parametric proportional hazards (PH) and fully parametric accelerated failure time (AFT) approaches for illustration.Method: We compare PH and AFT models and procedures in their integration into mediation models and review their ability to produce coefficients that estimate causal effects. Using simulation studies modeling Weibull-distributed survival times, we compare statistical properties of mediation analyses incorporating PH and AFT approaches (employing SAS procedures PHREG and LIFEREG, respectively) under varied data conditions, some including censoring. A simulated data set illustrates the findings. Results: AFT models integrate more easily than PH models into mediation models. Furthermore, mediation analyses incorporating LIFEREG produce coefficients that can estimate causal effects, and demonstrate superior statistical properties. Censoring introduces bias in the coefficient estimate representing the treatment effect on outcome – underestimation in LIFEREG, and overestimation in PHREG. With LIFEREG, this bias can be addressed using an alternative estimate obtained from combining other coefficients, whereas this is not possible with PHREG.Conclusions: When Weibull assumptions are not violated, there are compelling advantages to using LIFEREG over PHREG for mediation analyses involving survival-time outcomes. Irrespective of the procedures used, the interpretation of coefficients, effects of censoring on coefficient estimates, and statistical properties should be taken into account when reporting results

Lessons from Uganda on strategies to fight poverty

Countries receiving debt relief under the Heavily Indebted Poor Countries initiative will be among the first to benefit from the new World Bank -- International Monetary Fund approach to strengthening the impact on poverty of concessional assistance in low-income countries. The new approach features a more inclusive and participatory process for helping recipient countries develop poverty reduction strategies. From these strategies, joint Poverty Reduction Strategy Papers (PRSPs) will bring together the country's own priorities and Bank-Fund assistance to the country. In Uganda, such a strategy has existed for several years. Uganda was one of the first low-income countries to prepare a comprehensive national strategy for poverty reduction using a participatory approach. Indeed, its experience contributed substantially to the design of the PRSPs. Uganda's top leadership is heavily committed to poverty reduction. Formulation of Uganda's Poverty Eradication Action Plan (PEAP) in 1996-97 was the executive branch's effort to make that commitment and vision operational. The authors draw lessons from the drafting of Uganda's PEAP. First, the plan made extensive use of existing data and research about Uganda to refocus a range of public policies and interventions relevant to poverty reduction. Second, the government's approach was highly participatory, with central and local governments, the donor community, nongovernmental organizations and civil society, and academics invited to contribute. Third, the government was quick to translate the plan into its budget and medium-term spending framework. Public expenditures on basic services were significantly increased after adoption of the PEAP in 1997. The authors discuss the general characteristics of a poverty reduction action plan, drawing on Uganda's experience; discuss what is known about poverty in Uganda and identify shortcomings in the data; examine the macroeconomic and fiscal policies that were considered most important to poverty reduction during the participatory process; discuss the delivery of public services, especially those that directly affect the poor; and highlight problems associated with land issues, including problems with access to credit and financial services and with the security of productive assets.Health Monitoring&Evaluation,Environmental Economics&Policies,Public Health Promotion,Health Economics&Finance,Services&Transfers to Poor,Poverty Assessment,Environmental Economics&Policies,Achieving Shared Growth,Governance Indicators,Health Economics&Finance
