Good Governance for Dummies
President Asif Ali Zardari administered oath of office to a 22-person federal cabinet last Friday. Almost three years in, his party’s government says this has been done to address concerns about “good governance.” This is a good start, but there are other things that he and Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani can and should do.
First, we need to progress toward democratic governance. The Election Commission of Pakistan must be neutral and empowered. Political parties must run cleanly and democratically: they must hold regular intra-party elections, submit their audited accounts and statements of assets of members, and adhere strictly to election rules, including spending limits. Electronic polling can help make elections transparent and accurate. Legislators must be schooled about the procedures of the assemblies. Parliamentary committees should be supported by a staff of experts who can bring meaning and depth to discussions. And key appointments to state institutions should be heard and endorsed by a Senate committee

Work and Family Conflicts, Its Relationship with Employees' Well -Being: How Supervisor's Emotional Support moderates this relationship
This study tends to enlarge volume of quality work available on work family conflict. It also examines the link between work family conflict with employees’ well-being and moderating role of supervisory emotional support. By studying the moderating effect of supervisory emotional support on work family conflict causes to increase the worth of current study as these relations are rarely studied by the researchers. In order to conduct the study data has been gathered from 150 employees of service providing industries located in Skardu, Pakistan like banks, schools, colleges, offices through convenience sampling. The participants were asked to complete a questionnaire which included sets of questions about each variable. The author used three steps hierarchical regression and correlation for the purpose of data analysis. Three step hierarchical regression analyses indicated that employees experiencing work family conflict reported to affect their well-being negatively. As predicted Supervisory emotional support acts as moderator. Contrary to expectation supervisory emotional support failed to show its direct impact on employees’ well-being. This study will definitely provide assistance for managers and HR professionals along with all other types of managers to understand the importance of well-being of employees and give direction for management to focus on providing supervisory emotional support to them so that the organization will be able to have more satisfied employees.

Exploiting the Reconfigurability of ρ-VEX Processor for Real-Time Robotic Applications
Autonomous mobile robots generally have limited computational power on-board, and they have to perform their tasks in real-time in order to interact with their surroundings effectively. Therefore, there is a need to utilize the available computational capabilities efficiently. The ρ-VEX is a run-time reconfigurable VLIW processor. This unique processor allows separation of its issue lanes to form independently operating processing cores. Switching between these configurations during run-time allows optimizing the computing resources for the task(s) it is performing. In this project FreeRTOS is ported to the ρ-VEX processor and a control layer is developed. FreeRTOS manages the applications based on given real time parameters. The control layer decides the number of active cores (hardware contexts) and issue width of each core to best match the processing requirements of the applications. In this way, FreeRTOS and the control layer together can reconfigure the number of active cores at run-time. This is a very unique feature of this thesis project and can not be found in any other multicore implementation of FreeRTOS. The control layer along with FreeRTOS provides the user a facility to run applications under real-time constraints and with the best possible efficiency. In order to evaluate the performance, the overhead of the FreeRTOS is quantified and a performance comparison is made between several configurations of this system. Moreover, impact of reconfigurability of the ρ-VEX on the schedulability of real-time applications is measured and it is concluded that (indeed) reconfigurability of ρ-VEX improves the schedulability of the real-time applicationsElectrical Engineering, Mathematics and Computer ScienceComputer Engineerin
Recent Progress of Phase Change Materials and Their Applications in Facility Agriculture and Related-Buildings—A Review
Facility agriculture, which involves agricultural production in controlled environments such as greenhouses, indoor farms, and vertical farms, aims to maximize efficiency, yield, and quality while minimizing resource consumption and environmental impact. Energy-saving technologies are essential to the green and low-carbon development of facility agriculture. Recently, phase change heat storage (PCHS) systems using phase change materials (PCMs) have gained significant attention due to their high thermal storage density and excellent thermal regulation performance. These systems are particularly promising for applications in facility agriculture and related buildings, such as solar thermal utilization, greenhouse walls, and soil insulation. However, the low thermal conductivity of PCMs presents a challenge for applications requiring rapid heat transfer. This study aims to provide a comprehensive review of the types, thermophysical properties, and various forms of PCMs, including macro-encapsulated PCMs, shape-stabilized PCMs, and phase change capsules (PCCs), as well as their preparation methods. The research methodology involves an in-depth analysis of these PCMs and their applications in active and passive PCHS systems within facility agriculture and related buildings. The major conclusion of this study highlights the critical role of PCMs in advancing energy-saving technologies in facility agriculture. By enhancing PCM performance, optimizing latent heat storage systems, and integrating intelligent environmental control, this work provides essential guidelines for designing more efficient and sustainable agricultural structures. The article will serve as the fundamental guideline to design more robust structures for facility agriculture and related buildings
Examining Slavery\u27s Architectural Finishes: The Importance of Interdisciplinary Investigations of Humble Spaces
This thesis studies the evidence of architectural finishes in slave dwellings as a vehicle for understanding their lives, experiences and culture. Reviewing the finishes analyses of slave quarters in eight case studies, the author examines evidence of original finishes and observes how they can inform our understanding of slavery, including the possibility of a transfer of color traditions from Africa. The author also considers architectural and archaeological investigations performed on slave dwellings as a supplement to understanding these spaces and the use of African culture as a form of cultural resistance. The limited but important evidence underlines the need for additional research on the experience of slave life as drawn from material evidence
Factors Affecting the Job Satisfaction: Implications of Employee Loyalty and Employee Turnover
This study is focused to examine the impact of various factors (rewards, empowerment and clarity) on the job satisfaction, establishing relation with employee loyalty and employee turnover. The research is based on hypothesis-establishment, data collection via questionnaires and data evaluation by comprehensive regression analysis. The data was collected from hundred respondents, limited to various international institutions, such as The Islamia University of Bahawalpur, Pakistan, and Shanghai Jiao Tong University, China. The findings reveal that the job rewards and job clarity are positively related to the job satisfaction. The job clarity has more impact on the job satisfaction, while the job empowerment has the least or no impact. There is a negative relationship in employee’s turnover and job satisfaction. The employee loyalty increases as a result of job satisfaction which shows a positive relationship. Overall, the research tends to establish guidelines being useful for organizations in understanding the extent of job satisfaction.

Political distinction in the British anti-capitalist movement
This article argues that Bourdieu's theory of practice provides a useful and dynamic framework which may be used to examine the reproduction of political practice. I use the Bourdieusian theoretical model to analyse and interpret data collected from 30 semi-structured interviews with British anti-capitalist activists from a range of anarchist and socialist political organizations and networks. The interviews reveal a clear case of political distinction between anarchists and socialists. The political history, political methods, and ideology of the activists become embodied and routinized over time. This explains why and how there is a durable ideological division which is consistently reproduced over and over again within sections of the British anti-capitalist movement. © The Author(s) 2011
