Perceptions of Vocational Education: Human Resources Administration in Companies 2018
The survey charted the perceptions and opinions of employees in personnel management in different companies regarding vocational education and training in Finland. Most of the respondents were in charge of recruitment decisions in their company either by themselves or with others, and all were involved in the recruitment process in some way. Main themes included, among others, perceptions of how well the competence of persons who had completed vocational education or training met the requirements of working life, how general and vocational upper secondary education are appreciated, and how well the provision of vocational education and training matched the demand of the labour market. The study was commissioned by the Ministry of Education and Culture and Skills Finland. Data collection was conducted by IROResearch. First, the respondents' own positive or negative attitudes towards vocational education and training were charted. Their perceptions of whether the need for vocational education and training would increase in Finland over the next few years was examined. The respondents were also asked whether they thought there would be a shortage of workers who have completed vocational education or training over the next few years. How the respondents would evaluate the quality of vocational education and training in Finland at present was charted next. Finally, the number of new employees who had completed vocational education or training recruited in the company in the past year, as well as the respondents' estimate of how many similar recruitments would be done in the present and following year, were surveyed. Background variables included the number of employees in the respondent's company, the company's industry of employment, the region (NUTS3) and type of the municipality where the company was located, the percentage of employees in the company who had vocational upper secondary qualifications, as well as the respondent's highest level of education, gender and age group
Perceptions of Vocational Education: Parents of Ninth-Graders 2018
Vanhemmilta kysyttiin myös, mistä he olivat saaneet tietoa ammatillisesta koulutuksesta. The survey charted the perceptions and opinions of parents of ninth-graders regarding vocational education and their child's plans after completing lower secondary education. Main themes included, among others, the parents' opinions on studying and perceptions of how general and vocational upper secondary education are appreciated. The study was commissioned by the Ministry of Education and Culture and Skills Finland. Data collection was conducted by IROResearch. First, opinions on studying were examined with various attitudinal statements concerning, for example, whether the respondents thought that studying was interesting, that working was more interesting than studying, and whether they were interested in how their child succeeded in their studies. The respondents were asked whether their child would continue into upper secondary education after completing lower secondary school, how interesting they thought different paths of education were for their children (e.g. general or vocational upper secondary education, tenth grade) and which educational path they thought their child should choose after completing lower secondary education. Factors the respondents thought should affect their child's choice when applying to upper secondary education (e.g. wanting to have a job with good pay, location of the school/educational facility, parents' or the child's opinions) were also surveyed. If the respondents indicated that their child should choose vocational education or training after lower secondary school, they were asked which field of vocational education (e.g. humanities and arts, natural sciences, information and communication technologies) they thought would be suitable for their child. Finally, the sources of the respondents' information on vocational education, such as school in general, their child or TV/radio, were charted. Background variables included the respondent's gender, mother tongue, municipality of residence, region of residence (NUTS3), their own and their spouse's highest level of education and occupation group, and whether their child had received any special support in school during the past two years
Perceptions of Vocational Education: Lower Secondary School Guidance Counsellors 2018
Aineistossa on kartoitettu perusopetuksen oppilaanohjaajien mielipiteitä ammatillisesta koulutuksesta Suomessa. Vastaajat kertoivat, miten mm. oppilaan koulumenestys tai halu päästä nopeasti työelämään vaikuttavat siihen, millä tavalla he työssään ohjaavat oppilaita. Lopuksi vastaajat kertoivat, onko heillä työtään ajatellen riitävästi tietoa ammatillisesta koulutuksesta ja sen eri vaihtoehdoista. Taustatietoja aineistossa ovat vastaajan sukupuoli, kuinka kauan on työskennellyt perusopetuksen oppilaanohjaajana, asuinpaikkakunta sekä maakunta. The survey charted the perceptions and opinions of lower secondary school guidance counsellors regarding vocational education and training in Finland. Main themes included, among others, the future plans of the ninth-graders the councellors had guided during the past year, the councellors' perceptions of how general and vocational upper secondary education are appreciated, and factors that affected the educational guidance given by the councellors to the ninth-graders. The study was commissioned by the Ministry of Education and Culture and Skills Finland. Data collection was conducted by IROResearch. First, the councellors' perceptions of the ninth-graders' opinions on studying were charted with various attitudinal statements concerning, for example, how important the ninth-graders thought studying was for the future and whether they thought studying was interesting or working was more interesting than studying. Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis
