Private equity funds and hedge funds: a primer

Private equity funds and hedge funds are both alternative asset classes that are continuously growing in importance. Although they have different focuses, they share some characteristics. First of all, both have or allegedly have a significant impact on the economy as well as the financial system they operate in. Therefore, the question of a potential regulation of both asset classes arises. Due to the lack of sophisticated knowledge about the differences of these asset classes, market players fear that attempts to regulate hedge funds will adversely affect private equity funds. Besides the regulatory issue, there are several other links between these two asset classes that have to be looked at. The relationship between those two asset classes is therefore of general importance. Last months' developments in the hedge fund industry (e.g. rumors about turbulences as well as hedge funds forcing the dismissal of the CEO of Deutsche Börse) have now even led to a broad public debate about private equity and hedge funds. At least in Germany the debate has been partly fueled by the fact that both types of funds are highly funded by institutional investors from abroad. Due to this the debate widened and included criticism on Anglo-Saxon style capitalism as well. In the light of the last German elections, hedge funds and private equity funds have even been compared to locusts, notorious for exhausting whole countries. However, the distinction between hedge funds and private equity funds remains very vague in this discussion, so that deep mistrust is spread among the public opinion against these new, mostly unknown and misunderstood types of investors. For this reason it is important to * discuss the arguments for or against regulation, * look at the major links between the two asset classes, * look at the major differences that exist between the asset classes, and * conceive a set of criteria to clearly distinguish between both types of funds. The purpose of this paper is to comment on possible solutions to the above mentioned tasks. It outlines preliminary thoughts and findings. Further, it comments on the steps that we think should be taken to further enhance perception of private equity funds as opposed to hedge funds from a public as well as a regulatory perspective. --Private Equity Funds,Hedge Funds

Emotional regulation and motivation to drink: gender, negative emotionality, behavioral undercontrol, and family history

Despite support for the effectiveness of alcohol use disorders (AUD) treatment programs and the positive impact of policy changes related to alcohol use, AUD remains a major public health concern in the United States. As part of an effort to encourage transdisciplinary research, the integration of objective biological measures for AUD risk and existing psychosocial-based risk measures (e.g., demographic variables, personality characteristics, comorbid psychological disorders) are emerging as important areas of inquiry, with implications for the prevention and treatment of AUD. Theories of alcohol use emphasize the fundamental role of emotional regulation in drinking behaviors, and multiple psychosocial factors have been identified which influence such motivations for alcohol use. Through three separate, laboratory-based experimental investigations, this dissertation aimed to gain an understanding of the physiological mechanisms underlying the relationship between psychosocial factors (gender, personality, family history) and one’s desire to use alcohol for emotional regulation. In particular, this dissertation focused on examining the applicability of heart rate variability (HRV), an established psychophysiological measure of peripheral and central modulation of emotional arousal, in studying individual differences in emotional regulation. Changes in HRV in response to experimental manipulation of emotion and adaptive responding were linked to gender and personality differences in motivations for alcohol use. Gender differences in emotional reactivity suggest distinctive pathways toward unhealthy use of alcohol in men and women; that is, the pharmacological effects of alcohol appear to directly promote alcohol use in men, whereas cognitive expectancies, such as expectation that alcohol can counteract negative emotions, may underlie alcohol use in women, particularly when they are prone to negative mood states. Further, personality constructs of negative emotionality were associated with physiological dysregulation of emotion, which was linked to tendency to use alcohol for emotional regulation, particularly to suppress negative emotion. As a future direction, identification of malleable biological markers and the translation of these findings into clinical practices may help to better identify individuals at risk and suggest a novel approach for preventing or intervening in the development of AUD, which may in turn contribute to population health.Ph.D.Includes bibliographical referencesby Tomoko Udo Schalle

Abstract : This doctoral thesis aims to investigate the role of popular sovereignty in contemporary democracies. The conceptual correlation between these categories is hampered by the separation between the people, the holder of sovereign power, and whom exercises this power. Thus, popular sovereignty is a paradox: the people, holder of sovereign power, is whom less decides in democratic regimes. Nevertheless, it persists the idea that democracy is dependent on the notion of a sovereign people. This work intends to show that this paradox is both necessary and constitutive of democracy. To prove this hypothesis, the research used the theory of democracy of elites of Joseph A. Schumpeter and some elements of the theory of sovereignty of Jean Bodin. Finally, from these theoretical relationships were demonstrated consequences of this paradox in the perception of democracy and popular sovereignty

Background: Psoas abscess is rare, the presentation confounding and varied thusmaking the diagnosis and definitive management delayed with resultant severe morbidity and high mortality. The paucity of literature on this disease would appear to account for the low index of suspicion among primary carephysicians who often have first contact with these patients. Methods: We present a case of bilateral psoas abscess in an adultmale who presented with acute abdomen and the diagnosis of psoas abscess was made at laparotomy. Conclusion: We highlight the salien features of the disease, which may assist practitioners in reaching early diagnosis and improve outcome of the disease.Niger Med J. Parsing the Paramour: How Players’ Sexuality, Motivation, and UDO Influence Their Romantic Subplot Decisions in Western RPGs

    No full text
This article is the culmination of a study conducted by the author on players of five Western Role-playing Games (WRPGs) who participated in the romantic subplots of those games (n=1001). Influenced by Sherry Turkle’s The Second Self (2005) and publications from Adams (2015), Dym (2019), and McDonald (2015), this study investigated the relationship between participants’ sexualities, player motivation types, and universal diversity orientation (UDO) scores. This study found data to support significant relationships between these variables as well as (a) the frequency with which player sexuality influences their in-game romantic decisions, (b) the perception of how different sexualities are portrayed in WRPGs, and (c) the perception of how diverse sexualities fit along the games’ critical narrative paths. These results contribute to the body of work that advises the industry to spend the energy and resources on more inclusive narratives and better portrayals of the sexuality spectrum
