    Enhancing Law Review Impact

    No full text
This Article advocates law review reforms that would enhance the impact of the ideas within various journals’ published works. Opportunities, yet not often seized, chiefly arise from the new technologically based mechanisms for delivering information. Impact enhancement can be achieved with major, yet low effort, reforms to the solicitation, editing, and distribution stages of journal publication

On Snow\u27s Intellectual Property and Immorality

    No full text
In this Essay, I consider the “why” and “how” of Professor Snow’s controversial, countercultural, important, and relevant position that immorality may result in the denial of intellectual property protection. First, I highlight how surprising it is that Professor Snow’s argument springs from the theories underlying intellectual property protection, rather than the theories underlying the morality and ethics he believes ought to be considered in determining intellectual property protection. No one (that I know, at least) goes to the Environmental Protection Agency seeking better regulations to protect the environment and uses the labor desert theory of property rights as an argument. I would expect to see arguments against protective regulations to be based on Lockean theories about ownership of the fruit of labor. But, upon reflection, Professor Snow’s argument is not just surprising, it is persuasive. Second, I consider Professor Snow’s proposal for how morality and ethics might be injected into intellectual property enforcement. Professor Snow and I seem to agree that judicial discretion is not the best way to incorporate morality into the determination of what creative works deserve intellectual property protection. But we part ways with respect to his position that it is prudent for judges to consider morality in intellectual property cases based on the Constitution’s Intellectual Property Clause. In the end, I conclude that Congress and the President should enact legislation— or to be more precise amend the patent statute—when necessary to address moral aspects of inventions with clarity and precision

The Church, Transportation, And Race: Education, Involvement, And Advocacy In The Transportation Industry By Churches For The Benefit Of Dallas’ Black Community

    No full text
The American transportation industry is an amalgamation of policy, planning, infrastructure, funding, contracting, employment, economic development, legislative enactments, modes [transit, rail air], and roads, highways, and bridges. Each of these components affects the daily lives of ordinary people in multiple ways, including, but not limited to, employment, education, health care, recreation, and finances. Historically, the industry has ignored, jeopardized, and adversely affected Black people, neighborhoods, and communities. Quality of life, as related to transportation, in Black communities has not been and is not now on par with that in white communities. Nevertheless, if one observes the industry, one is hard pressed to find the presence of either the Church as a whole or individual congregations. This dissertation’s purpose is to change that dynamic and encourage Black churches and the Church at large to intervene in and interact with the industry as a powerful advocacy resource for Black people and the Black community. The theory is that the Church should not countenance racial discrimination in the transportation industry in any manner. The theological foundation for this assertion is Micah 6:8 and Matthew 22:37-40; that is, justice, mercy, and love. In Micah’s prophecy, God requires believers to love mercy, do justice, and walk with the Lord. None of those admonitions are lived out, as to transportation, if race is a constantly adverse and discriminatory factor. Moreover, transportation inequity does not show love. Rather, it says that some are less than others and not entitled to the full benefits of a just society

Enhancing Animal Shelter Operations with Time Series and Machine Learning

    No full text
Enhancing animal shelter operations through machine learning involves employing a variety of advanced techniques aimed at increasing efficiency, promoting animal welfare, and optimizing resource allocation. This paper explores predictive analytics for adoption rates using regression models to estimate the likelihood of adoption based on historical data, encompassing variables such as breed, health status, and previous adoption trends. Additionally, classification algorithms are utilized to categorize animals by adoption probability, facilitating better resources and marketing prioritization. Clustering algorithms are employed to group animals according to behavior patterns and/or physical health, enabling tailored medical care and enrichment activities that improve their mental and physical well-being. Time series (ARIMA) forecasting is applied to predict future animal intake capacity influencing inventory management and room allocation. Random forest and neural networks (LSTM) are integrated as supplemental predictive models, offering deep learning capabilities for more complex data patterns and serve as an additional tool in shelter decision-making processes. A key goal of this research is to reduce overcrowding/euthanasia rates, increase adoption rates, and increase Return to Owner (RTO) rates at the Dallas Animal Shelter by forecasting animal intake and predicting length of stay. The integration of these machine learning methodologies demonstrates enhancements in the operational effectiveness of animal shelters, ensuring that both animal care and resource utilization are maintained athigh standards. The findings highlight the potential of these techniques to enhance shelter management, promote more successful adoption outcomes, and reduce overcrowding/euthanasia rates
