A comparative analysis of intonational patterns in Ana Maria Matute and Juan Goytisolo : a study of two different contemporary styles
No full textThis study of the intonational patterns in selections of Ana María Matute and Juan Goytisolo was undertaken to see what the results would be. As the analysis progressed, it became more and more evident that these patterns were distinctive for each author and reflected two different temperaments, backgrounds and styles. One work of each author has been examined (Doce historias de la Artámila from Matute and Duelo en el Paraíso from Goytisolo) by studying three of the Doce historias de la Artámila and the first, middle, and last ten pages of the Duelo en el Paraíso, thus giving a representative sample of the total text. The procedure has been a quantitative linguistic approach in which the occurrences of intonational patterns have been counted and tabulated in terms of raw totals, then converted into percentages. The results indicate a consistency between intonational patterns and the thought and emotions of the authors. In this case, Ana María Matute and Juan Goytisolo show contrasting tendencies
Active galactic nuclei in the MID-IR: evolution and contribution to the cosmic infrared background
No full textWe present the first measure of the evolution of type I and 2 active galactic nuclei (AGN1 and AGN2) in the mid-infrared (15 mu m). We used a sample of 52 AGN selected from the southern ELAIS fields combined with a local sample of 91 AGN from the IRAS Faint Source Catalog. We find that AGN1. follow a luminosity dependent luminosity evolution with a rate k(L)=2.6, which stops at z larger than 2. A similar evolutionary scenario is found for AGN2 with k(L)=2.0-2.6, depending on the adopted k-correction. We estimate that AGN1 contribute about 3% to the cosmic mid-infrared background, while the AGN2 contribution is about 10%

Increased expression of the astrocytic glutamate transporter GLT-1 in the prefrontal cortex of schizophrenics

ABSTRACT
To verify whether altered glial glutamate uptake contributes to the
reduced efficacy of glutamatergic transmission reported in the prefrontal cortex of
schizophrenics, we studied the expression of GLT-1, the transporter responsible for most
glutamate transport, in autoptic samples of prefrontal cortex using real time quantitative
RT-PCR, immunocytochemistry, and functional assays. GLT-1 mRNA levels in
medication-free patients were 2.5-fold higher than in controls, whereas they were
normal or reduced in patients treated with antipsychotics. We also observed a 4-fold
increase in L-[3H]-Glu uptake in Xenopus oocytes injected with mRNA from the prefrontal
cortex of a medication-free schizophrenic and a 2-fold increase in GLT-1 protein in
the same cortical area of another medication-free patient. Results suggest that GLT-1
mRNA, protein and function are increased in prefrontal cortex of schizophrenics

del canonge Martín Matute, escrita
per l’historiador i secretari de l’entitat
Celestí Pujol i Camps. El motiu d’aquesta
actuació fou honorar la memòria i
mantenir viu el record d’aquest prohom
conegut entre els seus contemporanis
pels seus amplis coneixements històrics
i per la seva trajectòria com a eclesiàstic.
De fet, Matute fou l’epígon d’una llarga
tradició de clergues gironins il·lustrats
que combinaren la seva tasca eclesiàstica
amb l’estudi i el conreu de la història,
els quals, malauradament, igual que ell
han estat oblidats per la historiografia
posterior. Aquest treball pretén, doncs,
recordar-lo i, de retop, posar en relleu
la important tasca que aquests prohoms
van realitzar amb uns mitjans més que
precari
