Social and Institutional Delegitimization in Latin American Populist Regimes from the Late 20th to Early 21st Century
Full text linkThe construction of the enemy's image in Latin American populist regimes extends beyond political opponents, encompassing social actors and institutions. This essay examines such representations within populist movements and leaders—such as Peru’s Fujimori, Argentina’s Menem and Kirchner, and Venezuela’s Chávez—active in the 1990s and early 21st century. Common features emerge across these populist regimes, particularly in identifying social enemies and institutional adversaries.La costruzione dell'immagine del nemico nei regimi populisti dell'America Latina va oltre gli oppositori politici, estendendosi a includere attori sociali e istituzioni. Questo saggio esamina tali rappresentazioni all'interno dei movimenti e dei leader populisti—come Fujimori in Perù, Menem e Kirchner in Argentina, e Chávez in Venezuela—attivi negli anni '90 e nelle prime decadi del XXI secolo. In queste ondate di regimi populisti emergono caratteristiche comuni, in particolare nell'identificazione dei nemici sociali e degli avversari istituzionali
La letteratura orale embera: inquietudini e oscillazioni enunciative nel mito contemporaneo
Full text linkStarting from a redefinition of the notion of 'oral literature', this essay analyzes two versions of the myth of Jinu Potó, narrated by two members of the Embera community in Colombia. The analysis weaves together a study of the motifs with an exploration of what occurs between the act of narration. According to the thesis proposed, what happens in the course of storytelling complements the textual dimension of oral literature, condensing traces of the epistemic reconfiguration process taking place in contexts of forced displacement.A partire da una ridefinizione della nozione di ‘letteratura orale’, il saggio compara due narrazioni del racconto di Jinu Potó realizzate da due membri della comunità embera in Colombia. L’analisi intreccia uno studio dei motivi del racconto con un’analisi di ciò che accade tra la narrazione. Secondo la tesi proposta, ciò che accade durante la narrazione integra la dimensione testuale della letteratura orale embera, condensando del processo di riconfigurazione epistemica in atto in un contesto di sfollamento forzato
La representación de voces y actores sociales colectivos en la prensa a través de etnónimos: el caso de ‘catalanes’ y ‘españoles’
Full text linkThis study analyzes the use of the ethnonyms ‘Catalan’ and ‘Spanish’ in the Catalan and Spanish press before and after the October 1, 2017 referendum. Based on a journalistic corpus, it examines their role in identity construction, their semantic prosody, and discursive and ideological contexts. The findings show that these terms are not used in a stereotypical manner and that the notion of a ‘collective voice’ is a manipulable discursive construction, mediated by journalistic narratives that can exert forms of silencing.Este estudio analiza el uso de los etnónimos ‘catalán’ y ‘español’ en la prensa catalana y española antes y después del referéndum del 1 de octubre de 2017. A partir de un corpus periodístico, se examina su función en la construcción identitaria, su prosodia semántica, los contextos discursivos e ideológicos. Los resultados muestran que no se usan de forma estereotipada y que la ‘voz colectiva’ es una construcción discursiva manipulable, mediada por narrativas periodísticas que pueden ejercer formas de silenciamiento

It highlights the EMDH’s links to the nation’s transitional and restorative justice processes while exploring its contributions to emerging transnational memory practices.El debate científico sobre las políticas de memoria centroamericanas ha conocido importantes desarrollos, que testimonian su importancia en las agendas políticas actuales. Este artículo pretende reconstruir y analizar el proceso de creación y funcionamiento del Espacio de Memorias y Derechos Humanos salvadoreño, poniendo en evidencia tanto su conexión con los procesos históricos de justicia transicional y restaurativa del país, como sus relaciones con el desarrollo de nuevas prácticas transnacionales de memoria

Full text linkThis article offers a critical reading of the topophobic representation of enforced disappearance and femicide in Mexico through Sara Ahmed’s affective turn. Focusing on the art installation ¡Visite Ciudad Juárez! by Ambra Polidori and the journalistic report Los desaparecidos by Nolen and Márquez, it argues that emotions such as fear, pain, and disgust function as social technologies that shape bodies and territories. The study examines the ethical limits of representing suffering and proposes indignation as a potential site of political resistance.Este artículo propone una lectura crítica de la representación topofóbica de la desaparición forzada y el feminicidio en México desde el giro afectivo de Sara Ahmed. A través del análisis de la instalación de arte ¡Visite Ciudad Juárez! de Ambra Polidori y del reportaje periodístico Los desaparecidos de Nolen y Márquez, se sostiene que emociones como el miedo, el dolor y la repugnancia operan como tecnologías sociales que modelan cuerpos y territorios. Full text linkThe key objective of this article is to reflect upon the Rocafuerte Street and the Streets’ network neighboring the old town in Quito, which has been supporting a rich ensemble of social and cultural relationships that are characteristic features of the Andean region. This space is not only a popular trade zone open to negotiation among pairs and not pairs, but also, it constitutes a space of encounters and relationships with its own cultural practices. It is, on the other hand, a border space or threshold between the patrimonialized and the non-patrimonialized part of the old town.El objetivo de este artículo es reflexionar sobre la calle Rocafuerte y una red de calles y plazas adyacentes del centro histórico de Quito, que han servido de soporte a una serie de relacionamientos sociales y culturales característicos de las ciudades andinas. A más de ser espacios económicos, ha servido de base a la circulación de imágenes y representaciones relacionadas con la fiesta y la ritualidad barroca y con una “espectacularidad popular”. Full text linkThis article examines, through a comparison of Voz Operária, Opción, and Unidad y Lucha, the relationship that the Brazilian Communist Party, the Workers’ Socialist Party of Argentina, and the Socialist Party of Chile established with national universities within their opposition strategies to respective civil-military dictatorships (1964–1990). The universities, restructured by authoritarian regimes, were conceived as strategic spaces of contestation and key actors in democratic transition processes.Este artículo examina, mediante una comparación de Voz Operária, Opción y Unidad y Lucha, el vínculo que el Partido Comunista Brasileño, el Partido Socialista de los Trabajadores y el Partido Socialista de Chile establecieron con las universidades nacionales en el contexto de sus estrategias de oposición a las dictaduras civil-militares (1964-1990). Full text linkBetween 2018 and 2022, Brazil experienced deep political and social polarization, rooted in a dualistic logic dividing “friends” and “enemies.” Emerging in 2014, this reached its peak under Bolsonaro, whose rhetoric revived authoritarian ideals of a homogeneous nation. In one speech, he claimed laws serve the majority, while minorities must “adapt or simply disappear.” Echoing the military dictatorship, this discourse legitimises the exclusion of the “other,” even in physical terms.Entre 2018 y 2022, Brasil vivió una fuerte polarización política y social basada en una lógica dualista de “amigos” y “enemigos”.
