This master thesis deals with the campaign against the leftist writer and editor Hu Feng (1902-1985) in the nineteen fifties. It identifies and analyses literary critique as a tool used by the literature bureaucrats of the CCP to accuse Hu Feng and other literary figures. This strategy in the form of textual criticism is examined on the basis of selected works by Hu Feng, the indictments of the CCP, and critiques of his works by conformist authors. The manipulation of Hu Feng’s writings was aimed at legitimizing the purging of him and his followers. It was meant to enforce the implementation of Mao Zedong’s guidelines for literature and art, and to intimidate intellectuals who by not adhering to those guidelines would have questioned the party line. For a better understanding of the reasons for and implications of the campaign, the thesis also introduces information on the historical and political context of Hu Feng’s career, as well as his fate after the official end of the campaign

The renowned Chinese intellectual Hu Feng (1902-1985) is either referenced as the heir of the May Fourth critical spirit, especially that of Lu Xun (1881-1936), or associated with a famous case of political persecution in the 1940s and 1950s, namely, the “Hu Feng Anti- Revolutionary Clique.” However, the young Hu Feng as a translator during his years in Japan is somewhat neglected. This article situates Hu Feng in the context of world proletarian literature. I look into Hu Feng’s literary activities in Japan and examine his Chinese translation, Yanggui (1930), of a Soviet proletarian-utopian novel titled Mess Mend, or a Yankee in Petrograd (1923) via Japanese translation. I argue that the years in Japan and his translation of the Soviet novel shape Hu Feng as a thinker of international proletarian subjectivity.

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
