Una isla propia: sobre una novela poemática de Azorín
La isla sin aurora is a novel in which the author during his lifetime has collected his ideas regarding the creation of art and aesthetic pleasure. The novel became for Azorin not only a literary genre but also a genre of his life. Moreover, the poetry freed from a specific mould became the essence of people and things. The real writer has put aside the particular to delve into the universal meaning of our species. Each artist makes the journey through their particular island and upon arrival realizes that the most important work of the writer is the process of self discovery and self realisation.

As a starting point to the set of poems, the hybridization of the lyric-poetic genre with autobiographical and memorialistic speech is highlighted. At the same time, possible dialogues and preliminary intertextual relations with Diario de Muerte by Enrique Lihn y Veneno de escorpión azul by Gonzalo Millán are suggested.

The Translator's Task: Recreating the Textual Atmosphere of Isla Cofre Mítico by Eugenio Fernández Granell
In this dissertation, I introduce the Spanish painter, poet, essayist, and novelist Eugenio Fernández
Granell and his seminal surrealist work, Isla cofre mítico. Granell was born in Galicia, Spain, in
1912 and can easily be described as a key figure within the surrealist movement in the second half
of the twentieth century. Isla cofre mítico was Granell’s first published book, and it is the fullest
published discussion about André Breton’s short work Martinique charmeuse de serpents, giving
followers of Surrealism a deeper understanding of Breton’s time in Martinique.
When you first pick up Granell’s book Isla cofre mítico, you are immediately struck by the cover’s
fantastic, mythical creature composed of vibrant colors and amorphous features. The image is a
pictorial representation of Granell’s island book that is Isla cofre mítico. The book represents the
act of translation in all senses of the word. In it, Granell translates his violent experiences from the
Spanish Civil War into words and images. He translates the foreign sights and sounds of the
Caribbean geography and culture as he tries to make sense of the place that becomes his temporary
home. He translates his experience of the world in the aftermath of the Second World War. For
Granell, the aesthetic vision of André Breton is the only mode of expression capable of translating
his experiences and thoughts into visual images and words.
Isla cofre mítico is a visual, textual, and auditory experiment in translation for the original author
and for me, the translator. In Isla cofre mítico, Granell translates the soundscapes of the island
through the sounds created in and between words. He translates French passages from André
Breton’s Martinique charmeuse de serpents into Spanish, as well as passages from other literary
texts and historical documents. He translates images into words, and he juxtaposes words to
produce sound and create meaning. How does one approach the translation of such a complex
work? This dissertation presents an analysis of the complex textual environment of Granell’s text
as well as my interpretive act of translation. I present a number of considerations for the translation
process, including approaches to recreating complex patterns of repetition and textual musicality.
I highlight the problematic role of textual ambiguity created by the author as translator from French
into Spanish and my role as translator from Spanish into English. I also bring in translators who
have contributed to the discussion of translation as an act of violence, and I attempt to demonstrate
that Granell challenges previous notions of translation violence through his clashes of textual
juxtapositions
Episode 35: Alexis Castellanos, Author of “Isla to Island”, and Her Panel Presentation during the Operación Pedro Pan Two-Day Event
In Part 1 of “Operación Pedro Pan: The Voices and Stories of Cuba’s Child Exodus—A Knights HistoryCast Mini-Series,” the Department of History’s Sebastian Garcia talked with Alexis Castellanos, an author, illustrator, graphic novelist, and a panelist at the esteemed, conspicuous, and powerful “Operación Pedro Pan: Honoring the Cultural, Historical Legacy of Cuba’s Child Exodus” Two-Day Program that Florida Humanities, UCF’s Department of English and Department of Modern Languages and Literatures sponsored (see https://cah.ucf.edu/pedro-pan/ for more details on sponsors and the program in general).
Sebastian structured this specific episode on Alexis Castellanos’ Isla to Island, a wordless graphic novel grounded by her personal family history and the history of Operación Pedro Pan (Operation Peter Pan). By analyzing such a historic event through the medium of fiction, Sebastian argued that this is one of the most unique Knights HistoryCast episodes of all time. Naturally, their conversation expanded to what she talked about during her panel presentation in Panel One, Day 1 of the event that featured “internationally renowned scholars that discussed the political, historical, and cultural legacy of Operación Pedro Pan (1960-1962).” (https://cah.ucf.edu/pedro-pan/)

Marina Martín Garcia
Isla Martín Garcia is founded on a rock outcrop in the Río de la Plata which is a natural protected area between Argentina and Uruguay. Due to the extension of the runway at the local airport, wetlands between Isla Timoteo Domínguez and Isla Martín Garcia developed during the last decades. The bay, where the old port was located, was loaded with sediment. After the waters between the two islands sedimented, Isla Hércules is formed and a channel is created. For the location of the marina, three possible options are selected: at the pier, south of Isla Hércules and in the sedimented bay north of Isla Martín Garcia. By using a multi criteria analysis, a marina at the pier is chosen as the best option because of its small dredging area and minor environmental impact. In consultation with the consultative authorities, a marina at the bay is chosen as the elaborated alternative. The recovery of the old situation in which the marina is located in the bay is the main reason for this choice.Implementation of the marina at Isla Martín Garcia involves cooperation between two parties: the government and a second investor. The government is responsible for the island, and a certain amount of liquidity is required to boost tourism on the island. A second party, like a private investor, is introduced for the maintenance and exploration of the project. This cooperation needs to invest 22.9 million dollars; this includes the 16.4 million dollars for the government and 6.5 million dollars for the second party. Without involving an external investor the internal rate of return (IRR) is 1.77% which is very low. When involving a private investor the IRR increases, the external investor receives an IRR of 7.71 % over the entire lifetime of the marina.Hydraulic EngineeringCivil Engineering and Geoscience
