Engineering salinity tolerance in rice by exogenous expression of cell death regulators
Rice, an important crop that feeds more than half of the world's population is very sensitive to salinity stress – a growing problem affecting crop production globally. This PhD study addressed this problem by manipulating the programmed cell death pathways in rice resulting in significant enhancement of salinity stress tolerance. The impact of this work is that farmers would be in a position to grow rice containing such a trait in environments where salinisation of the soil exists, thereby addressing food security needs
Manipulation of programmed cell death pathways enhances osmotic stress tolerance in plants: Physiological and molecular insights
Programmed cell death (PCD) refers to the death of a cell that is genetically “programmed. Alongside cell division and cell migration, PCD enables the organism to strictly control cell numbers and tissue size as well as to protect itself from unwanted cells that threaten homeostasis. Programmed cell death, specifically apoptosis, a physiological form of cell death was first reported in the nematode C. elegans in 1972. Since this initial discovery, the functional roles of programmed cell death have been intensely scrutinized and observed across kingdoms ranging from animals to plants. Akin to their mammalian counterparts studies have shown that PCD pathways are vital players in the mediation of plant responses to a range of abiotic stresses, including drought. Students’ Satisfaction with University Lunch Quality: Case Fox Mamselli Restaurant at KAMK
The purpose of this thesis is to measure the students’ satisfaction with university lunch service, at the same time, to identify the international perspectives and suggest new strategies for the upcoming renovation. The research was conducted for the sake of both students and university’s restaurant itself, specifically, not only help them have a higher quality university lunch but also provide Fox Mamselli restaurant with the students’ expectations and develop ideas for a new canteen in the future.
Different concepts of customer satisfaction, customer expectation and measurements are discussed in the theoretical part. This section explains the customer perceptions as well as the correlation between customer satisfaction and six-core determinants based on the conceptual model of (Wilson, et al., 2012). The researcher applied the SERVQUAL model in evaluating service quality and its linkage with the satisfaction level. Essentially, the information of university lunch served by the institutions of higher education in Finland is introduced, followed by multi-cultural views of Finnish cuisine and Finnish school meal obtained in initial studies.
The author utilized two research methods, i.e. qualitative and quantitative methods to solve the research problems. An online survey was conducted with 117 participants, including both Finnish and foreign students at KAMK. A semi-structured interview with a representative of Fox Mamselli was then implemented via email to conclude in renovation strategies, which solve the remaining issues and expectations raised in the survey results.
The study outcome illustrates that lunch price and service quality were both hit the highest satisfaction level. The school meal offered by Fox brings a positive image of Finnish cuisine to international customers as well. Nevertheless, menu selection and food quality should be prioritized to improve in the next renovation. Kajaani Mamselli has proposed applicable solutions for the lunch variety and international development such as organizing theme weeks and tasting afternoons. The canteen premise will be upgraded with expanded spaces and other amenities. Extra services added to the Fox lunch are taken into consideration with appropriate price adjustment

Physiological basis of salt stress tolerance in rice expressing the antiapoptotic gene SfIAP
Programmed cell death-associated genes, especially antiapoptosis-related genes have been reported to confer tolerance to a wide range of biotic and abiotic stresses in dicotyledonous plants such as tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum L.) and tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L.). This is the first time the antiapoptotic gene SfIAP was transformed into a monocotyledonous representative: rice (Oryza sativa L.). Transgenic rice strains expressing SfIAP were generated by the Agrobacterium-mediated transformation method and rice embryogenic calli, and assessed for their ability to confer tolerance to salt stress at both the seedling and reproductive stages using a combination of molecular, agronomical, physiological and biochemical techniques. The results show that plants expressing SfIAP have higher salt tolerance levels in comparison to the wild-type and vector controls. By preventing cell death at the onset of salt stress and maintaining the cell membrane’s integrity, SfIAP transgenic rice plants can retain plant water status, ion homeostasis, photosynthetic efficiency and growth to combat salinity successfully
Performing Peace, Communicating Identities: Post-War Modernism in Virginia Woolf’s Mrs. Dalloway and Natsume Soseki’s Kokoro
This thesis is interested in a comparative study of Virginia Woolf's "Mrs. Dalloway"'s and Natsume Soseki’s "Kokoro"'s uses of modernism to depict postwar life. Both novels reflect similarities and differences that allow readers to understand two similar, yet contrasting, periods of change in mourning in the early 20th century.Bachelor of Art
Cultivando resiliência em um mercado volátil : um estudo de caso sobre a adaptação estratégica da DHL global forwarding durante a crise energética global
This thesis explores the strategic responses of DHL Global Forwarding (DGF), a leading player in the freight forwarding industry, to the energy disruption between 2021 and 2023. During this period, the global freight transport sector faced significant challenges, including record-high freight rates, fluctuating trade volumes, and widespread port congestion. DGF, in turn, contended with reduced freight demand and pressures on service performance. Using a qualitative case study approach that integrates secondary data with insights from interviews with senior DGF executives, this research investigates how the company leveraged its core capabilities to navigate a rapidly evolving market landscape. By fostering a culture of ownership and collaboration, embracing digital technologies to enhance visibility and operational efficiency, and prioritizing sustainability, DGF improved its service quality, employee engagement and financial performance. The findings highlight the importance of long-term strategic planning and organizational simplification in cultivating agility and resilience during periods of disruption. Although focused on a single company, the dissertation offers valuable pedagogical insights and actionable lessons for strategic management in dynamic environments.Esta tese explora as respostas estratégicas da DHL Global Forwarding (DGF), um dos principais atores do setor de agenciamento de cargas, à crise energética entre 2021 e 2023. Leveraging TikTok's live-streaming marketing for the cosmetics industry in Vietnam
This thesis studies how livestream marketing on the TikTok platform is affecting the cosmetics consumption behavior of young people in Vietnam. In the context of strong e-commerce development and the increasing consumer trend towards interactive experiences, TikTok has become a new and effective marketing channel, especially in the cosmetics industry - where consumers need transparency, visual images and real reviews.
The theory section describes the theoretical ideas pertaining to consumer purchasing behaviour, the cosmetics sector, live-streaming, TikTok, and the Vietnamese marketing environment.
The thesis uses quantitative research methods to analyze changes in purchasing decision-making behavior, as well as the level of consumer interaction and participation. Through an online survey approach with a focus on group 18-35, coupled with analysis of two classic cases TikTokers Vo Ha Linh and Hannah Olala, the study has discovered that the factors of limited-time offer, influencer credibility and the arena of direct interaction in livestreaming all entertain significant roles in encouraging shopping motivation.
The findings suggest that TikTok’s livestream is not just a sales platform but a trust-building and emotionally bonding tool for brands. The thesis ends with concrete advice for cosmetics brands to monitor KOLs and produce content-based, shareable, interactive content, and the use the power of the TikTok platform to demand better after-sales policies and censorship from seller in order to protect the consumer experience
