Variations on the Author
Get PDF“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

No full textO objetivo deste estudo é adentrar o texto do Documento de Aparecida, em busca de uma compreensão global de seu significado para a Igreja na América Latina e o Caribe. Para isso, o autor agrupa a reflexão em torno a três pontos: num primeiro momento, para fazer emergir o espírito de Aparecida, se refere a algumas surpresas em torno à Quinta Conferência; num segundo momento, buscando fazer uma leitura global do texto, apresenta a ‘proposta’ de Aparecida; e, finalmente, respaldado nas surpresas e na proposta da Quinta Conferência, acena para as novidades de Aparecida.
ABSTRACT: This article’s goal is to access the Aparecida Document in order to gain a global understanding of its meaning to the Latin America and Caribbean Church. For this, the author brings together a reflection on three points: first, he introduces some surprises about the fifth General Conference of the Latin American and Caribbean Episcopate to get the spirit of Aparecida; second, he presents the “proposal” of Aparecida taking a global reading as standpoint to its text; and, finally, based on the surprises and the proposal of the Fifth Conference, he suggests some newness about Aparecida

The article starts with an initial historical span starting with Medellin where popular piety is judged as something valuable and ending with Aparecida that considers the popular expresion of faith a truly christian sprituality. At the beginning, as a result of the waves of rationalism which came around the sixties, there was a rather negative vision of popular religiousness but, later on, there appeared a different vision which recognizes cultural values in such religiousness together with negative features. The article explains how the Conference of Aparecida recognizes popular religiousness as an evangelical force by itself and not merely as a receptacle for evangelization… It remains to be seen how the evangelization could be carried out through it.Es una presentación histórica desde la conferencia de Medellín hasta la conferencia de Aparecida donde se muestran las diversas actitudes que se han tenido en dichas conferencias hacia la religiosidad popular. Get PDFAfter a short survey of the Christology in the Medellín, Puebla and Santo Domingo documents, this article deals with recent christological emphasis in the recent Document of Aparecida. The author believes that this document is in harmony with the primitive Christology of the New Testament which describes Jesus as the “Living One”, the “Lord of Life” and fountain of life. By doing so, the document proposes the “encounter” with Jesus as the key to any kind of discipleship and mission in the Church. It means, in fact, an “encounter” which gives the disciple overflowing “Life” while the thankful and joyful disciple,conscious of such gift, takes courage to be a missionary who announces life and brings life to persons and peoples of Latin America and the Antillean islands.Después de un breve recorrido por la cristología contenida en los documentos de Medellín, Puebla y Santo Domingo, el artículo centra su atención en los énfasis cristológicos del reciente documento de Aparecida. Según el autor, este documento, en sintonía con la primigenia cristología neotestamentaria, designa a Jesús como “el Viviente”, “Señor de la vida” y fuente de la misma. Esta forma de entender a Jesús le permite al documento plantear el “encuentro” con él como la clave de todo discipulado y misión de la Iglesia.
