Conformal field theory and topology
The aim of this book is to provide the reader with an introduction to conformal field theory and its applications to topology. The author starts with a description of geometric aspects of conformal field theory based on loop groups. By means of the holonomy of conformal field theory he defines topological invariants for knots and 3-manifolds. He also gives a brief treatment of Chern-Simons perturbation theory
Wireless Dependable IoT/M2M for Disaster Rescue and Healthcare - Reliable Machine Centric Sensing and Controlling
Wireless body area network (BAN) has been researched
and developed for ubiquitous and remote medicine
and its international standard IEEE802.15.6 was established
in February, 2012. In order to find missing victims and sense
their vital sign at disaster spots, highly reliable and secure, i.e.
dependable BAN can be applicable to a body of robots, cars,
UAVs (Unmanned Aerial Vehicle) like drones as well as a human
body for dependable machine to machine (M2M) sensing and
controlling. Such a M2M network can be called a ‘BAN of
Things’ like Internet of Things (IoT). Around disaster areas
unexpected obstacles and complicated radio propagation tend
to prevent accurate ranging and positioning, and reliable vital
data sensing. To perform precise localization and robust data
communications by BAN, dependable radio technologies such
as ultra wide band (UWB) radio, array antenna and error
control codes in physical layer must be jointly optimized with
MAC, Network, and application layers. Even after BAN has been
developed and standardized globally, regulatory science must
adopt it to guarantee the safety, reliability and security and to be
compliant to regulations. This paper will introduce research and
development, standard and regulatory compliance of dependable
wireless BAN for disaster rescue and medical healthcare using
UWB ranging and communication. The joint Japan and New
Zealand project on remote sensing and controlling multiple UAVs
to locate casualties in natural disasters such as earthquakes will
be also introduced. The research has two objectives, one being
to use UAVs to locate people under rubble, the other to collect
information that is contained within the BANs those people are
wearing. The new IEEE802.15 international standard group of
dependable wireless networks IEEE802.15 IG-Dependability has
been chaired by the author(Prof. Ryuji Kohno)
Narratives of information war and information warfare in Latvia's online news media Delfi.lv, Rus.delfi.lv publications and user comments (2016 - 2017)
Bakalaura darba “Informatīvā kara un informatīvās karadarbības naratīvi Latvijas tiešsaistes ziņu mediju Delfi.lv, Rus.delfi.lv publikācijās un lietotāju komentāros (2016 - 2017)” mērķis - noskaidrot naratīvus publikācijās, lietotāju komentāros, to atšķirības un ietekmi uz mediju auditorijas priekšstatiem par informatīvā kara un informatīvās karadarbības saistību ar Latvijas nacionālās drošības apdraudējumu. Teorētisko pieeju veido Viljama Hatčinsona (William Hutchinson), Iana Munro (Iain Munro) informatīvā kara un informatīvās karadarbības definīcija un izpausmju apkopojums, Noras Berningas (Nora Berning) izklāsts par mediju naratīviem. Naratīvu analīzei izmantots Aļģirda Žiljena Greimasa (Algirdas Julien Greimas) aktantu modelis. Pētītas Latvijas vadošā tiešsaistes ziņu medija publikācijas un komentāri latviešu un krievu valodā, veikta anketēšana, noskaidrojot naratīvu ietekmi uz medija auditorijas priekšstatiem. Pētījuma rezultāti liecina par atšķirībām žurnālistu, ekspertu, politiķu un lietotāju naratīvos, kas ietekmē mediju lietotāju priekšstatu atšķirības.The aim of the bachelor’s paper “Narratives of information war and information warfare in Latvia's online news media Delfi.lv, Rus.delfi.lv publications and user comments (2016 - 2017)” is to identify the leading narratives in publications and user comments and how narratives influence audience perception about information war and it’s connection to Latvia. Theoretical part is based on the definition of information war and means of information warfare by William Hutchinson, Iain Munro and media narratives by Nora Berning. To identify narratives Author has chosen to use Algirdas Julien Greimas actantial model. Author analysed the content of online news media publications and user comments in Latvian and Russian and conduceted a survey to examine influence of narratives. The results show differences in narratives, which cause differences in audience perception
Microscopic calculation of thermally induced spin-transfer torques
Spin-transfer torques, both reactive and dissipative, induced by temperature gradients in conducting ferromagnets are calculated microscopically for smooth magnetization textures. Temperature gradients are treated à la Luttinger by introducing a fictitious gravitational field that couples to the energy density. The thermal torque coefficients obtained by the Kubo formula contain unphysical terms that diverge towards zero temperature. Such terms are caused by equilibrium components and should be subtracted before applying the Einstein-Luttinger relation. Only by following this procedure a familiar Mott-like formula is obtained for the dissipative spin-transfer torque. The result indicates that a fictitious field that couples to the entropy rather than energy would solve the issue from the outset.</p
Reliability-based design of tunnel support systems
Recent developments of tunnelling technology have led to the construction of many tunnels, not only in rural areas, but also in cities. In particular, tunnel construction in cities requires very high standards of safety, since failure can cause the loss of many human lives as well as damage of properties.Despite the recent advances in the development of tunnelling methods, it is still difficult to predict the exact properties of the ground where the tunnels are planned to be constructed, due to large uncertainties. Designs that do not take into account the effect of uncertainties could be subject to large error. Consequently, it is very important that uncertainties be accounted for properly in design.The objective of this study is to propose the use of probabilistic methods to study the effect of uncertainties in the exploration phase, design phase and construction phase of a tunnel project. The outline for each phase is as follows: (1) Exploration phase. Prior to design, rock profiles at a planned site is probabilistically evaluated, based on the information of local experts and borings. (2) Design phase. The reliability of the tunnel supports in soft rock is first examined. The effects of the creep of the rock and bending moment of the lining on the reliability are also evaluated. Next, reliability of the lining in a jointed hard rock is evaluated by first-order second-moment method, based on the distributions of the geometrical properties of the joints. The effect of blasting on the reliability is also examined by linear elastic fracture mechanics. (3) Construction phase. The probabilistic method is presented to predict the long-term deformation of the opening surface during construction. Bayesian approach is used to update the accuracy of the prediction, based on the observed deformation. A Family of Finite-Dimensional Representations of Generalized Double Affine Hecke Algebras of Higher Rank
We give explicit constructions of some finite-dimensional representations of generalized double affine Hecke algebras (GDAHA) of higher rank using R-matrices for Uq(slN). Our construction is motivated by an analogous construction of Silvia Montarani in the rational case. Using the Drinfeld-Kohno theorem for Knizhnik-Zamolodchikov differential equations, we prove that the explicit representations we produce correspond to Montarani's representations under a monodromy functor introduced by Etingof, Gan, and Oblomkov.A portion of this work was conducted at the 2015 MIT Summer Program in Undergraduate
