Exploring different causal variables for the concept of social acceleration, the review examines the transformations of moral, valuative and political institutions that occurred during the historical development of modernity as episodes induced by obsolescence. As this is a product of increasingly changing and accelerated fields of action, the author mobilizes this concept to substantiate an unprecedented proposal for differentiation between modernity and late modernity as historical moments based on different levels of space-time compression, institutional stability and temporalization of individual and collective future projects

The thrilling development of the nanoimprint lithography (NIL) over the past twenty years has made the large area nanopatterning from an obstacle to the bridge between imagination and reality. This thesis addresses the establishment of NIL technique at the Institute of Micro- and Nanotechnologies (IMN) of Technische Universität Ilmenau and the development of the soft UV-NIL. The fabrications of periodic nanostructures with tunable feature sizes in large area and at low cost as well as its additional applications are investigated. A center-to-edge imprint scheme in ambient atmosphere using soft stamps is employed throughout this work. The advantages of soft UV-NIL have been identified all along and have drawn tremendous research attention. To clarify the potential issues for imprint in ambient atmosphere, a type of bi-layer soft stamp with a soft Polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) back carrier and a thin feature layer employing various material is configured. The bi-layer soft stamps such as PDMS/PDMS, PDMS/organic solvent diluted PDMS, PDMS/X-PDMS, PDMS/vvsPDMS, PDMS/UV-PDMS, are comparatively characterized. High stamp reusability and imprint uniformity of the PDMS/PDMS, PDMS/toluene-diluted PDMS and PDMS/UV-PDMS stamps have been validated at ambient conditions for at least twenty consecutive imprints by using a single stamp. This demonstrates the suitability of NIL for batch fabrication of nanoimprinted structures on wafer scale. Based on the solid imprint performance of the ambient center-to-edge scheme, a process chain to fabricate nanostructures with tunable feature sizes at constant pitch (NanoTuFe) is designed and realized in this thesis. A master with positive or negative nanopatterns is prepared to initialize the fabrication process. An intermediate template featuring sloping sidewalls is introduced to bridge the original master and the final patterns. Taking advantage of the sloping sidewalls of the patterns on the intermediate template, the etch-mask on the final substrate can be opened to discrete dimensions simply by varying the etching durations. Numerous new NIL templates and substrates with diverse layouts, profiles and aspect ratios have been achieved with tunable feature sizes. - New NIL templates of circular nanopillars with diameters of 150/200/250/350 nm and aspect ratio below 2 are generated for NIL templates based on a master featuring 450 nm circular nanopillars. - Additional NIL templates of square nanocavities with 130/160/190/220 nm feature sizes are fabricated from a master patterned by circular nanocavities of 350 nm in diameter - By introducing a bi-layer lift-off process, the image tone, layout and feature sizes can be adjusted. NIL templates featuring square nanopillars with dimensions of 120/200/320 nm are achieved based on a master of circular nanoholes with 350 nm in diameter. Furthermore, diverse top-down or bottom-up surface patterning techniques can be integrated to the NanoTuFe methodology. The versatility using NanoTuFe to fabricate high aspect ratio nanostructures (feature sizes from 70 nm to 400 nm, etch depth of 4-7 mm) for high emissive silicon surfaces in both circular and square layouts is demonstrated. The concept of using NIL for curved surface (convex-plano refractive lens) has been proved as well. Replicating nanostructures is in general cost-intensive, especially for large patterning area and with high resolution. The NanoTuFe approach enables a fast realization of large area nanopatterns with tunable dimensions at low cost, which is one of the essential contributions of this work.

Surveying silk fibre degradation by crystallinity determination: a study on the Tang-Dynasty silk treasure from Famen Temple, China

When Chinese archaeologists opened an unknown vault under the collapsed pagoda of Famen Temple near Xian (Shaanxi Province, NW China) in 1987, they found a vast amount of valuable silk textiles. The degraded textiles were part of a treasure comprising hundreds of artifacts deposited by Tang dynasty (ad 618–907) emperors as a gift to the temple. Run as a bilateral German-Chinese project, the Roemisch-Germanisches Zentralmuseum Mainz established a textile conservation laboratory in Shaanxi´s provincial capital Xian in 2001, joining numerous other laboratories that have existed there since the early 1990s.This preliminary study represents part of an ongoing investigation programme that accompanies the conservation work. The Tang dynasty silk is generally in a very poor state of preservation as a result of its long burial period. Large sections have only survived as an amorphous brown mass of fibre debris. Some parts are better preserved, however, offering the unique opportunity to study the whole range of degradation stages on ancient silks. This preliminary scientific investigation focuses on the determination of the silk fibres’ crystallinity and its relation to the ageing process. As we know from modern material, silk is mainly crystalline, albeit in a somewhat amorphous state. The methods of investigation used were X-ray diffraction (XRD) using synchrotron radiation, which is a new way to determine crystallinity of ancient silk fibres; and polarized Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) for the determination of crystallite orientation. Both methods were specifically devised to gain information on small single fibres

High power semiconductor lasers are the most efficient light sources in converting electrical energy into optical output. However, their maximum achievable optical power and efficiency are limited by thermal and non-thermal power saturation. The main objective of this thesis is to investigate power saturation mechanisms in GaAs-based broad-area lasers. The direction chosen for the studies is to enhance power and efficiency at high bias by optimizing vertical epitaxial layer design. The study targets vertical design optimization by maximizing modal gain in the quantum well (QW) at room temperature and investigates the impact of capture time on power and efficiency at high bias. Increasing modal gain in the QW reduces the overall carrier density, resulting in reduced free carrier absorption loss, spontaneous emission, and the non-radiative recombination in the QW. Moreover, this reduction in carrier density also minimizes carrier leakage outside the QW and mitigates the effects of the Longitudinal spatial hole-burning (LSHB). The optimized vertical design is expected to exhibit high power, efficiency, and low-temperature sensitivity to the threshold Ith and slope S, provided the targeted design changes do not trigger other losses. To achieve this, a series of highly extreme triple asymmetric (ETAS) vertical designs are developed with systematic variations in the asymmetric layers. These variations result in vertical designs with different confinement factors Γ, i.e. the overlap of the optical mode with the QW, ranging from 0.5% to 1.3%, while maintaining a constant QW thickness (d = 7 nm). These modifications lead to increased modal gain for the same current density. Both simulations and experiments are conducted to assess the performance of these designs. Experimental results reveal that the threshold of low-confinement devices (Γ0.8%) and eliminated with the highest confinement designs (Γ∼1.3%). Longitudinal spatial hole burning (LSHB) effects are likely to be responsible for the additional carrier loss in low confinement designs with low front facet reflectivity, attributed to the higher sensitivity. This study also explores the impact of design changes needed to push the confinement to the highest level (Γ ∼ 1.3%). The highest confinement design leads to a substantial increase in modal gain, as observed in the measurements, and this is achieved through specific design changes while maintaining a high effective barrier height. The experimental result shows a strongly reduced slope and internal efficiency at high bias. The simulation indicates a high carrier density in the barrier layer but not enough to explain the performance degradation with standard material parameters. The temperature-dependent optical loss also remains small in the studied temperature range. The performance degradation is likely not linked to barrier height or leakage mechanisms, but is instead correlated with increased carrier loss within the barrier layer. Nonetheless, high gain reduces the temperature sensitivity of Ith and slope S and significantly decreases Ith. Further efforts are undertaken to increase power and efficiency by reducing the operating temperature from 298 K to 218 K of the diode laser. It is well-established that lowering the temperature enhances modal gain and differential internal efficiency, resulting in improved optical performance. However, the measured series resistance is identified as a limiting factor to low-temperature efficiency. This is contrary to the known decrease in bulk layer series resistance with lower temperature based on bulk layer estimation and drift-diffusion-based simulations. A theoretical study reveals that observed higher series resistance can be explained in terms of captured electrons and holes with finite time in the QW. Furthermore, the presence of a finite capture time can lead to high hole accumulation in the n-doped region at extremely high bias, increasing free carrier absorption, non- stimulated recombination rates, and leakage currents, ultimately leading to power saturation. Overall, this investigation uncovers new findings regarding the role of finite capture time in limiting power at high bias. This result helps to explain the short pulse experimental results that show power saturation does not scale as expected with the ∼2x changes in QW confinement. This observation deviates from typical expectations related to dominant non-linear effects like LSHB, two-photon absorption, and gain compression.
