    Stages for the More Sustainable Farm

    Currently, agricultural farm units are faced with a double and most times contradictory challenge, in order to be successful: on the one hand the invested capital has to be profitable and the economic performance has to be maximised. On the other hand, given the socio-environmental situation, it is necessary to preserve and to protect the environment and natural resources. Given the potential conflict of the two aims, since the satisfaction of one implies the underperformance of the other (and vice versa), the question then is: which is the solution to choose? We intend, in this work, to formulate a farm plan with the purpose of reconciling the criteria of environmental sustainability with that of economic competitiveness. For this achievement we proceed to the comparative study of sustainability of different groups of farms identified in the study area (first evaluation cycle) through MESMIS (“Marco para la Evaluación de Sistemas de Manejo de Recursos Naturales Mediante Indicadores de Sustentabilidad” - Framework for Evaluation of Natural-Resource Systems Handling through Sustainability Indicators) methodology, that allowed to select the more sustainable group of farms. Based on the found potentialities and weakness on these production systems, we stepped to the planning of a production unit of bovine meat, which obeys simultaneously to economic and environmental objectives, using Multicriteria Decision. We finished the work with the sustainability evaluation between groups of farms identified previously and the planned farms (second evaluation cycle), based, again, in the MESMIS methodology, to confirm (or not) the greatest sustainability of the last ones.     The Museum at FIT presented Exhibiting Fashion, its twenty-first academic symposium on Friday, March 8, 2019. This symposium explored the history of fashion curating, the different ways fashion is displayed in museum settings, and how national and regional identities influence fashion exhibitions. The symposium was organized in conjunction with Exhibitionism: 50 Years of The Museum at FIT, which commemorated the rich history of the museum, the site of more than 200 exhibitions since the 1970s.Dr. Alexandra Palmer is the Nora E. Vaughan Senior Curator at the Royal Ontario Museum. She has curated numerous exhibitions including Christian Dior, and she is the author of the book Christian Dior: History and Modernity, 1947–1957

    Resumo: O artigo aponta o modo como o romance Deus-dará de Alexandra Lucas Coelho, escritora portuguesa contemporânea, pode ser compreendido como um exercício de renegociação da identidade portuguesa em relação a questões referentes à colonização no Brasil. Mais do que isso, problematiza-se como, por meio da estratégia da paródia no texto ficcional, a autora consegue expressar uma necessidade e possibilidade de se redefinir pelo outro em um movimento contrário ao do discurso colonial – o que também ocorre em suas entrevistas e em suas narrativas de viagens, tais como em Vai, Brasil e Cinco Voltas na Bahia e um beijo para Caetano Veloso. Abstract: The article observes how the novel Deus-dará, by Alexandra Lucas Coelho, a Portuguese contemporary writer consists in an exercise of renegotiation for the Portuguese identity in relation to issues that refer to the colonization process in Brazil. Moreover, this text seeks to show how parody as a fictional literary strategy helps the author in expressing a necessity and a possibility of redefining oneself through the other, in a direction that goes in the opposite way of the colonial speech. This necessity and this possibility also appear in the author’s interviews and travel books, such as Vai, Brasil and Cinco Voltas na Bahia e um beijo para Caetano Veloso, which will also be mentioned in this article.Keywords: Portuguese identity; parody; post-modernism; Portuguese contemporary writing; Alexandra Lucas Coelho

    La traduction des néologismes présents dans la littérature fantastique est un sujet qui a, au mieux de nos connaissances, été très peu étudié. Jusqu'à présent, la plupart des recherches à ce sujet sont des études de cas précises qui sont souvent difficilement applicables à l'ensemble du domaine. Pourtant, ces néologismes peuvent représenter un enjeu considérable pour les traducteurs qui y ont affaire. Nous jugeons donc pertinent, considérant la popularité du genre fantastique, d'explorer quelles stratégies de traduction sont les plus efficaces dans ce contexte. Nous nous servons considérons représentative du publié e au XXI e siècle : , comme base pour notre étude de cas sous genre fantastique, d'une œuvre que nous de la high fantasy The Stormlight Archive telle qu'elle est de Brandon Sanderson. Nous recensons les néologismes formels contenus dans les trois premiers tomes publiés et traduits de cette série et analysons les stratégies employées par la traductrice Mélanie Fazi pour les rendre en français , de même que l'efficacité de ces traductions. Nous avançons que dans le cadre d'une œuvre de fantasy se déroulant dans un univers inventé, un postulat de traduction d'orientation cibliste est à prioriser. Les stratégies néologiques utilisées en anglais n'ont pas nécessairement à être imitées en français, et plusieurs variétés de néologismes français peuvent être créés à partir d'un même type de construction morphologique anglaise. Nous présentons plusieurs exemples de stratégies possibles et analysons leurs forces et leurs faiblesses respectives, autant d'un point de vue morphologique que pratique. Nous nous servons des informations ainsi amassées pour rédiger ce mémoire, qui, nous l'espérons, pourra servir de guide pour aider les futurs traducteurs de romans fantastiques à traduire les néologismes auxquels ils seront confrontés. Notre guide ne se veut toutefois ni exhaustif ni prescriptif, et ne constitue qu'un document pouvant servir de soutien aux traducteurs.The translation of neologisms featured in fantasy literature has, to the best of our knowledge, been the subject of few studies. Until now, most research on this topic consists of specific case studies that can hardly be applied to the entire field. Nonetheless, these neologisms represent a great challenge for translators. We therefore deem pertinent, considering the popularity of the fantasy genre, to explore which translation strategies can be the most efficient in this context. As the basis of the case study, we selected a work we consider representative of the current high fantasy subgenre: The Stormlight Archive by Brandon Sanderson. We identify the formal neologisms featured in the first three books of the series and analyze the strategies used by translator Mélanie Fazi to render them into French, as well as the efficiency of these translations. We argue that, with a fantasy work set an imaginary universe, a domesticating approach should be prioritized. Indeed, neologizing strategies used in English do not necessarily have to be reproduced in French, and many types of neologisms in French can be created from one type of morphological construction in English. We discuss several examples of possible strategies and analyze their respective strengths and weaknesses, both from morphological and practical standpoints. Our goal is that the information contained in this thesis can serve as a guide for future translators faced with neologisms in fantasy. However, this guide is neither exhaustive nor prescriptive; it is but a document aiming to support translators

    L’arrivée imminente du stage obligatoire dans la formation universitaire en traduction multipliera le nombre d’étudiantes qui feront un séjour dans le monde professionnel pendant leur parcours universitaire. Comment s’assurer que ce séjour soit formateur pour elles ? Qu’elles ne font pas uniquement une visite dans le monde professionnel, mais profitent réellement d’un stage enrichissant ? C’est la question que nous nous poserons pour ce mémoire. Pour ce faire, nous nous appuierons sur la recherche déjà effectuée en pédagogie de la traduction, les théories importantes de l’éducation et l’exemple d’un domaine ayant implanté le stage avec succès. Pour déterminer les facteurs définissant un stage enrichissant, nous tenterons d’abord de cerner les compétences qu’il est possible d’acquérir en stage et les indicateurs de réussite des stages effectués au cours des cinq dernières années. Au moyen d’une étude de documents, de questionnaires et d’entrevues, nous brosserons un portrait de la situation actuelle et offrirons des pistes de réflexion et de solution pour les défis à venir concernant l’optimisation des stages

    Athaliah and Alexandra: Gender and Queenship in Josephus [Author Accepted Manuscript]

    Athaliah and Alexandra were the only two women to rule as queens of Judah/Judaea in their own right and both women’s reigns are reported in Josephus’ writings. Despite their uniqueness, however, Athaliah and Alexandra are rarely compared in scholarship; the former is usually dismissed, and focus centred on the latter. This article contends that there are historical similarities between the two, but literary differences. Josephus could have referred to Athaliah or used elements of her portrayal in his presentation of Alexandra but does not, creating the impression that Alexandra was completely different to her predecessor. It may be instructive, therefore, to consider why Josephus literarily isolates the queens and what this means for his interpretation of Alexandra

    Le soutien accordé par les organismes subventionnaires pour les traductions anglaises de romans canadiens-français du XIXe siècle

    Dans cet article, nous examinons la production et la réception, dans l’Amérique du Nord anglophone, des traductions anglaises de trois romans canadiens-français publiés au XIXe siècle : L’Influence d’un livre (Aubert de Gaspé, fils, 1837), Les Anciens Canadiens (Aubert de Gaspé, père, 1863) et Angéline de Montbrun (Conan, 1884). Ces romans ont fait l’objet d’une première traduction (ou d’une retraduction) après l’adoption de la Loi sur les langues officielles en 1969 et la mise en place de subventions à la traduction du Conseil des arts du Canada. Ces événements ont contribué au renouvellement d’intérêt pour la traduction de la littérature canadienne-française, intérêt qui est également alimenté par un essor d’études et de publications dans le monde universitaire québécois. Dans cet article, nous décrivons le contexte de production des traductions Angéline de Montbrun (1974) et The Influence of a Book (1993) ainsi que de la retraduction Canadians of Old (1996). Nous nous attardons au financement de ces traductions, à savoir les subventions obtenues des organismes gouvernementaux et non gouvernementaux, notre objectif étant de montrer qu’en diminuant le risque financier encouru par les maisons d’édition, les différentes formes de soutien financier ont permis d’accroître le rayonnement de la littérature canadienne traduite.In this article, we look into the production and reception in anglophone North America of the English translations of three French-Canadian novels published in the 19th century: L’Influence d’un livre (Aubert de Gaspé, fils, 1837), Les Anciens Canadiens (Aubert de Gaspé, père, 1863), and Angéline de Montbrun (Conan, 1884). These novels have been translated (or retranslated) since the introduction of the Official Languages Act in 1969 and the creation of the translation grants by the Canada Council for the Arts. These events, along with an increase in studies and publications by Québécois literature scholars, fuelled a renewed interest for the translation of French-Canadian literature. In this article, we will examine the production of the translations Angéline de Montbrun (1974) and The Influence of a Book (1993), as well as the retranslation Canadians of Old (1996), with a focus on their funding, i.e. the grants awarded by funding agencies. Our goal is to show that by reducing the financial risks for publishing houses, the different types of funding enabled an increase in visibility for translations of French-Canadian literature
