Martinho e de Fernando Pinto do Amaral sobre sua trajetória histórica a partir dos anos 1960.Analyzing the poem IV in Do Mundo, the principles of a postmodern poetics in Herbert Helder are searched. Linda Hutcheon’s notion of ex-centricity subsides the characterization of post-modern Portuguese poetry, based on the contributions of Fernando J. P. Martinho and Fernando Pinto do Amaral about its historical trajectory from de 60s onwards

ABSTRACT: The present work intends to present an analysis of the anthropological evolution of Fernão Mendes Pinto related to his contact with the oriental culture. It is also our purpose to prove that through the definition that the author tries to do of the “Other” he begins to rediscover his own identity. The encounter with a new culture allowed the men of the 16h century to begin the multicultural process, and consequently the intercultural dialogue. In our analysis of the Peregrinação we will try to reflect about the way that Fernão Mendes Pinto was influenced by the process of describing the “Other”, with whom he contacted, and in so many ways so different from him

Using the poetic experience of portuguese writer Herberto Helder, this study analyzes certain representations of animals in his work in order to relativise the traditionally construed theoretic places proposed by other fields of knowledge, such as Philosophy, Anthropology, and Literary Theory. At first, the helderian 'lyrical machine' and its operations ofreversibility and metamorphosis are presented, as well as considerations partaining to particular aspects of this poet's work. We investigate, along these lines, the ontological rule of humans with the intent to create methodological pathways for the reflection regarding animal otherness, which stands as the center of the present research. As the poet recovers a decadent genre such as the bestiary for his intents and purposes, Helder avails himself of animality in an operation of criticism which, in the writing of becoming, proposes new approaches and perceptions of the unknowable. Finally, we establish relationships between the appropriation of tradition and the gesture of translation, which, in Helder, are processes that affirm writing as an opening to the foreign as well as to othernessA partir da experiência poética do escritor português Herberto Helder, buscou-se ler certas figurações do animal em sua obra, com o objetivo de relativizar os lugares teóricos tradicionalmente construídos por diferentes campos do saber, a exemplo da filosofia, da antropologia e da teoria literária.

Climate change projections for olive yields in the Mediterranean Basin

The olive tree is one of the most important crops in the Mediterranean basin. Given the strong climatic influence on olive trees, it becomes imperative to assess climate change impacts on this crop. Herein, these impacts were innovatively assessed, based on an ensemble of state-of-the-art climate models, future scenarios and dynamic crop models. The recent-past (1989-2005) and future (2041-2070, RCP4.5 and RCP8.5) olive growing season length (GSL), yield, growing season temperature (GST) and precipitation (GSP), potential (ETP) and actual (ETA) evapotranspiration, water demand (WD) and water productivity (WP) were assessed over Southern Europe. Crop models were fed with an ensemble of EURO-CORDEX regional climate model data, along with soil and terrain data. For the recent-past, important differences between western and eastern olive growing areas are found. GSL presents a strong latitudinal gradient, with higher/lower values at lower/higher latitudes. Yields are lower in inner south Iberia and higher in Italy and Greece, which is corroborated by historical data. Southern Iberia shows higher GST and lower GSP, which contributes to a higher ETP, lower ETA and, consequently, stronger WD. Regarding WP, the recent-past values show similar ranges across Europe. Future projections point to a general increase in GSL along with an increase in GST up to 3 degrees C. GSP is projected to decrease in Western Europe, leading to enhanced WD and consequently a yield decrease (down to -45%). Over eastern European, GSP is projected to slightly increase, leading to lower WD and to a small yield increase (up to +15%). WP will remain mostly unchanged. We conclude that climate change may negatively impact the viability of olive orchards in southern Iberia and some parts of Italy. Thus, adequate and timely planning of suitable adaptation measures are needed to ensure the sustainability of the olive sector

Decomposing the transfer entropy to assess higher order effects in Cardiovascular Interactions

    No full text
Transfer Entropy (TE) can exhibit bias-either in deficiency or excess-during both pairwise and conditioned calculations, owing to high-order dependencies among the dynamic processes under consideration and the remaining processes in the system used for conditioning. To handle high order effects, instead of conditioning TE on all the measured processes except the driver and target, as in its fully conditioned version, or not conditioning at all, as in the pairwise approach, one can search for both the multiplets of variables that maximize information flow and those that minimize it, thus obtaining a decomposition of TE into unique, redundant, and synergistic atoms. This approach quantifies the relative importance of high-order effects compared to pure two-body effects while highlighting the processes that contribute to building these high-order effects alongside the driver. We employ this approach to analyze cardiovascular and cardiorespiratory interactions related to baroreflex and respiratory sinus arrhythma mechanisms

Herberto Helders continuous poem, in the condition of his poetic construct, is a flow whose stagnations are topics that, due to its repetition and its importance in the total work, ask the reader for more attention, a sort of slow and wandering reading. This study aims to investigate one of these "thematic nodes": the house. From the systematic analysis of the available poetic work, a route inside Herberto Helders house was drawn, with emphasis on its relations with childhood, with his mother, withdeath and with words other basic thematic nodes for the attempt of understanding the architecture of the prolific poetry of Herberto Helder. To achieve this goal, the poet's own reflections from his important prose publications were evoked, as well as observations done by Herberto Helder's scholars.
