Abjection in the novels of Marlene Van Niekerk
Includes bibliographical references. In this thesis, three of Marlene van Niekerk's novels, translated from Afrikaans into English, are examined, with the focus on the representation of abjection in the texts under discussion. The theoretical point of departure of this study is Julia Kristeva's essay Powers of horror (1982), which addresses, in particular, the notion of abjection and how certain abject elements play a pivotal role in people's everyday lives. From a psychoanalytic perspective, abjection is viewed as a revolt against the mother and foregrounds particularly the influence of the maternal body over the subject. In this instance, the subject desires liberation from the hold of the maternal and seeks to subject the mother to abjection. Bodily fluids seeping out of the body, diseases, viruses, dirt and death (and in particular the corpse) are all elements that are encompassed in the concept of abjection. Manifestations of abjection in the form of the abject mother, abject spaces, abject bodies and the link between abjection and filth are comparatively analysed in the three texts. The thesis concludes by showing that Van Niekerk deliberately inscribes elements of the abject into her texts so as to transgress and deconstruct the norms associated with a patriarchal and racist society in South Africa. Van Niekerk also undermines the norms that underpin such a society: religious indoctrination, gender oppression and Othering. By writing her novel Triomf (1999) in a demotic register, Van Niekerk furthermore questions the prevalent assumptions about what is deemed proper language for writing a novel. Writing, for her, thus serves the purposes of abjecting, of rejecting the impositions of the symbolic order. Following the publication of her first collection of short stories, Die Vrou wat haar verkyker vergeet het [The woman who forgot her binoculars] in 1992, there was general consensus that the baroque nature of the language resulted in reader resistance to the text. This explains why she decided to write her first novel in the crude and obscene language of a low-class family, the Benades of Triomf
Whose story is it anyway? The ethics of narration and the narration of ethics in Summertime and Die Sneeuslaper
Includes bibliographical references. This dissertation analyses and compares the narrative strategies in J.M. Coetzee’s Summertime and Marlene van Niekerk’s Die sneeuslaper and considers the implications of these strategies for the authors’ exploration of the ethics of writing. Much has been written about the literary oeuvres of both Coetzee and Van Niekerk, including studies of the translations of Van Niekerk’s Afrikaans novels into English. There are few “interlingual” comparative studies of contemporary works in Afrikaans and English, however, and certainly none to my knowledge which compares the work of Coetzee and Van Niekerk. My contribution to the conversation about Coetzee’s and Van Niekerk’s work, but also to an increasingly multilingual and interconnected South African literary criticism, will be a comparison of one recent work by each of these two authors, written in English and Afrikaans respectively. I draw on the theories of Bakhtin, Barthes and Levinas to consider the ethical dimension of texts in which “double-voicedness”, a questioning not only of existence, but of the self is fore grounded in the content and narrative structure; where there is a shift in focus from the author to the reader (“the birth of the reader”) and “utterances” are made with the response of “the other” in mind
“Texte des Versuchens”: un’analisi della raccolta di collages Und. Überhaupt. Stop. di Marlene Streeruwitz
This book is the first published analysis and interpretation of the collection of literary collages Und. Überhaupt. Stop. Collagen. 1996-2000. by Austrian writer Marlene Streeruwitz. It presents the author and body of her narrative work, analyses her programmatic poetics and investigates the collage as a technique, aesthetic principle and mode of thought, before moving on to the examination of the primary text. It thus addresses a noticeable gap in the reception of Streeruwitz’ work (as this collection has been virtually ignored, also internationally) and provides methodological and aesthetic insights relevant to the analysis of other literary collages, while also providing a comprehensive resource for the study of Streeruwitz and her oeuvre

Félelem, hatalom és politika Marlene Streeruwitz válogatott prózaműveiben
A disszertáció célja, hogy betekintést nyújtson Marlene Streeruwitz korai irodalmának legfontosabb irodalomelméleti, feminista és politikai aspektusaiba. Míg az értekezés első felében a női írás elmélete (Écriture féminine) és a tudatfolyam technika bemutatása is fontos szerepet játszik, úgy az elméleti fejezetek elsősorban az írónő két legmeghatározóbb vitairataira fókuszálnak, egészen pontosan: Sein. Und Schein. Und Ersceinen. (1997) valamint Können. Mögen. Dürfen. Sollen. Wollen. Müssen. Lassen. (1998). The goal of the dissertation is to provide an overview of the most important literary, feminist and political aspects of the early literature of Marlene Streeruwitz. Besides providing a basic overview of concepts such as Écriture féminine and stream of consciousness in the theoretical section of this work, the first part of the dissertation focuses on two of her most famous and influential theoretical writings: Sein. Und Schein. Und Erscheinen. (1997) and Können. Mögen. Dürfen. Sollen. Wollen. Müssen. Lassen. (1998). This section includes a detailed discussion of the main characteristics of Streeruwitz’ unique and rebellious approach to (feminist) writing, her thoughts on the grand narratives of world literature and last but not least, the reasons why she chose to become a feminist author in the first place. The analytical part of the dissertation concentrates on three early novels of Marlene Streeruwitz: Verführungen. 3. Folge Frauenjahre. (1996), Nachwelt. Ein Reisebericht. (1999) and Jessica, 30. Roman. Drei Kapitel. (2004). This section focuses on three of her most relevant key concepts: fear, power and political writing. The conclusive part of the dissertation summarizes the most important characteristics of the early literary work of Marlene Streeruwitz, including her thoughts on writing, women’s literature and patriarchy in general
Die Darstelung der Männlichkeit im Roman "Verführungen" (1996) von Marlene Streeruwitz
The paper deals with an interpretation of the masculinity in the novel Verführungen, written by Marlene Streeruwitz (∗1950), an Austrian author with a strong feminist position. The hegemonic masculinity represents the most dominant form of masculinity in the society, and was understood in the western countries especially as the traditional, patriarchal masculinity. This sociological concept provides the starting point of the literary analysis. The paper deals with an interpretation of the masculinity in the novel Verführungen, written by Marlene Streeruwitz (∗1950), an Austrian author with a strong feminist position.
