The dynamic influence of the DRB1*1101 allele on the resistance of sheep to experimental Teladorsagia circumcincta infection

    No full text
Suffolk sheep carrying the DRB1*1101 (previously referred to as-DRB1*0203 or G2) allele have been reported to show increased resistance to natural Teladorsagia circumcincta infection compared to non-carriers. The objective of this study was to compare the biochemical and physiological responses of DRB1*1101 carrier and non-carrier twin lambs to an experimental infection with 3 x 10 [superscript 4] L3 Teladorsagia circumcincta. The variables studied included worm burden, faecal egg count, abomasal mast cells, IgA, IgE, IgG1 plus IgG2 and haematological parameters at 0, 3, 7, 21 and 35 days post infection (dpi), and duodenal smooth muscle contractility at 0 and 35 dpi. DRB1*1101 carrier lambs had significantly lower worm burden, higher mast cell and plasma platelet counts than the DRB1*1101 non-carriers (P < 0.05). Before infection, the non-carrier lambs exhibited significantly higher mucosal levels of all antibody isotypes measured compared to the carriers; these levels remained relatively stable over the course of infection in the non-carriers while there was a slow build up of these antibodies in the carriers up to day 21 post infection (pi). The DRB1*1101 non-carrier lambs had a significantly higher plasma lymphocyte count, and produced greater duodenal contractile force relative to the carrier lambs (P < 0.05). There was no significant difference between genotypes in the level of plasma eosinophils, monocytes, neutrophils or FEC. This evidence suggests that resistance conferred by DRB1*1101 is acquired rather than innate, depends on worm expulsion rather than fecundity and is dependent on mucosal mast cell proliferation, platelet activation, and IgA and IgE antibody responses.Teagasc (Organization).

Self-Portraiture and the Rise of "Arab" Art: Tarek Al-Ghoussein, Hassan Musa and Walid Raad.

    No full text
This dissertation offers three monographic case studies of contemporary artists from the Arab world, Tarek Al-Ghoussein (Palestine/Kuwait), Hassan Musa (Sudan/France) and Walid Raad (Lebanon/US), to challenge the prevalent reading and curatorial framing of non-EuroAmerican contemporary art through generalized notions of identity. I focus on self-portraiture, arguing that the artists use it to complicate assumptions about identity. By including Arab artists of diverse national, geographic, religious and diasporic experiences, I start with the premise that the term “Arab” embodies a broad spectrum of identities. Additionally, I outline a history of the international exhibitions and biennials that have contributed to the rise of art from the Middle East and North Africa. I highlight the role of scholars of African art in this process, for by insisting on the diversity of the term “African,” they included Arab North African artists. I position Al-Ghoussein, Musa and Raad within art historical trajectories that illustrate their engagements with western art history while also referencing their collective histories. Al-Ghoussein stages photographs that integrate the genres of self-portraiture, landscape and performance in an interrogation of Palestinian identity, both his as an exile as well as the terrorist connotations prevalent in the media. The themes that emerge-belonging, longing, land and isolation-find resonance in post-1948 Palestinian literature and art. Musa’s paintings illustrate “ArtAfricanism,” a term he coined to critique the art world’s promotion of African art that reflects a narrow conception of African identity. Identifying as “Arab, African and Western,” he produces artworks that reference the display and performance of essentialized identities. Raad references formative theories about photography and historical avant-garde artists to question notions of truth, institutional authority and authenticity. He does this in two multimedia projects about 1) the Lebanese Civil War (1975-1990) and 2) the burgeoning art industry in the Middle East and Arabian Gulf. Al-Ghoussein, Musa and Raad each uniquely approach the project of self-portraiture, tempering the representation of identity with strategies that stymie simplistic readings. By elucidating these artists’ engagements with western art history, this dissertation argues for the expansion of curatorial and scholarly approaches to artists from outside the EuroAmerican context.PhDHistory of ArtUniversity of Michigan, Horace H. TRANSFORMATIONAL LEADERSHIP, ORGANIZATIONAL COMMITMENT AND EMPLOYEE PERFORMANCEIN HASSAN USMAN KATSINA POLYTECHNIC AND UMARU MUSA YARADUA UNIVERSITY

    No full text
This study investigates the impact of transformational leadership on employee performance and organizational commitment in Hassan Usman Katsina Polytechnic and Umaru Musa Yaradua University.A quantitative approach was employed to collect data from a sample of 297 staff members as determined by the Morgan Table. Out of the 280 questionnaires returned, 250 were considered valid for analysis. The data was analysed using Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modelling (PLS-SEM), focusing on measurement and structural model evaluations. The findings reveale significant positive relationships between transformational leadership, employee performance, and organizational commitment, with high levels of significance among the variables. Transformational leadership explains 68% of the variance in employee performance and 72% in organizational commitment. The study concludes that transformational leadership significantly enhances employee outcomes and recommends the implementation of strategic leadership training programs to ensure sustainable organizational development. To further improve employee performance, particularly among staff in tertiary institutions, it is essential to adopt the principles of transformational leadership. This leadership style inspires, guides, and nurtures employees, fostering a sense of empowerment and value. As a result, employees develop a stronger sense of loyalty and commitment to the organization, which motivates them to perform their duties with greater efficiency, timeliness, and quality

Extraction and some characteristics of mango seed kernel starch for industrial applications / Saidu Hassan Musa and Balarabe Sarki Sagagi

    No full text
Starch is extensively used for various applications in many industries such as food, pharmaceutical, textile, and many more. Mango starch is a better solution to reduce the reliance on food crops starch for food security. Starch is a polymer of hexa carbon monosaccharide–D–glucose. It is highly abundant in corn seeds, potato tubers, and the roots and stems of other plants. All green plants make and store D- glucose in the form of spherical starch granules: 2–100 μm in diameter. Most commercially available starches are isolated from grains such as maize, rice, and wheat and from tubers such as cassava and potato. A novel starch from mango seed was extracted and characterized using a standard method for potential industrial applications. A high yield of 76.82 % and further characterized through Proximate analysis, with a moisture content of 4.790, ash content of 0.210, the starch protein content of 0.043, and starch lipid 0.380. FTIR, morphological structures, and some physical characteristics such as water binding capacity (WBC), solubility, and other parameters were observed for their suitability in industrial applications
