Cooley Oral History Project, and tape nos. 1163, 1164, and 1165. Accompanied by an article about Dr. Hashimoto and text of his convocation address of June 13, 1981In a 1990 interview with Everett L. Cooley, Joy Hashimoto (b. 1927) recalls her family. She describes being interned, 1942-1945 in the Granada Relocation Center (later called Amache) in Colorado, attending college one year at Carleton and finishing her degree at North Dakota. Bound with the interivew are a biographical sketch of Dr. Hashimoto and a copy of the convocation address he gave to the graduating class of 1981 of the College of Medicine. He relates stories heard from his father, who came to the United States in 1896 as a railroad worker and became wealthy as an investor in various western companies. He describes his early life in the Japanese section of town, going to the Stewart School and East High, and graduating from the University of Utah. Other topics include treatment of the Japanese during World War II, his years as a physician and professor at the University of Utah, living the best of both the Japanese and American cultures, and ethnic prejudice. Mr. Hashimoto (b. 1911) tells about his genealogy and the life of his parents and other family members in Japan. He details his father\u27s immigrant experiences including working for the railroad, surviving an ambush by cowboys, and arranging immigration of Japanese laborers for mining and farming companies. He reminisces about his own childhood in Salt Lake City\u27s "Japan Town," discusses prostitution and syphllis, discrimination, getting his medical degree from Harvard, and practicing in Salt Lake City. Dr Hashimoto was born in Salt Lake City, Utah in 1911. Dr Hashimoto received both his A.B. (1930) and M.A. (1937) from the University of Utah. Dr Hashimoto received his M.D. from Harvard University in 1934. Dr Hashimoto returned to the University as a Teaching Fellow in the Anatomy Department and remained, as Professor of Anatomy, as the School of Medicine\u27s longest tenured professor. Dr Hashimoto died in 1987
