Hashimoto thyroiditis as a manifestation of struma ovarii

    No full text
We describe clinicopathologic features, laboratory data, and imaging and therapeutic management of a rare case of Hashimoto thyroiditis arising in struma ovarii. The patient was a 38-year-old woman with clinical symptoms of hyperthyroidism. Laboratory data showed elevated levels of total and free thyroxine, low thyrotropin level, and positive specific antithyroid antibodies without ultrasound evidence of morphologic abnormalities of the thyroid gland. Pelvic ultrasonography and magnetic resonance imaging of the abdomen showed bilateral solid ovarian masses containing cystic and fat areas diagnostic of teratoma. The performance of a I whole-body scan demonstrated a focus of intense uptake in the pelvis with minimal residual thyroid gland. The patient had a bilateral oophorectomy, and histologic examination revealed thyroid tissue in both masses with all the features of Hashimoto thyroiditis in the right ovary. Symptoms of hyperthyroidism diminished after the surgery, and the thyroid hormone levels and antithyroid antibodies were in the normal range in 1 month. The present case further confirms the rare occurrence of Hashimoto thyroiditis in struma ovarii. This diagnosis should be suggested in the differential diagnosis of patients with symptoms of thyroid disease and a normal thyroid gland. Copyrigh © 2010 by Lippincott Williams & Wilkins

RAD51- and MRE11-dependent reassembly of uncoupled CMG helicase complex at collapsed replication forks.

In higher eukaryotes, the dynamics of replisome components during fork collapse and restart are poorly understood. Here we have reconstituted replication fork collapse and restart by inducing single-strand DNA lesions that create a double-strand break in one of the replicated sister chromatids after fork passage. We found that, upon fork collapse, the active CDC45-MCM-GINS (CMG) helicase complex loses its GINS subunit. A functional replisome is restored by the reloading of GINS and polymerase ?? onto DNA in a fashion that is dependent on RAD51 and MRE11 but independent of replication origin assembly and firing. PCNA mutant alleles defective in break-induced replication (BIR) are unable to support restoration of replisome integrity. These results show that, in higher eukaryotes, replisomes are partially dismantled after fork collapse and fully re-established by a recombination-mediated process

Hashimoto thyroiditis and vestibular dysfunction .

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this review was to analyze the existing literature concerning the relationship between Hashimoto thyroiditis (HT) and vestibular dysfunction. METHODS: We used electronic databases (PubMed, EMBASE, Cochrane Library) to search and collect all published articles about the association between HT and vestibular disorders. RESULTS: Several observational and retrospective studies have postulated a relationship between thyroid autoimmunity and vestibular disorders. In most cases, an appropriate control group was lacking, and the impact of thyroid functional status could not precisely be established. In recent years, two well-designed prospective studies have provided convincing evidence that the association is not random. One article reported that patients with Ménière disease (MD) had a significantly higher prevalence of positive anti-thyroid autoantibody as compared to healthy controls. Moreover, more than half of MD patients had either positive anti-thyroid or non-organ-specific autoantibody titers, compared to less than 30% of both patients with unilateral vestibular paresis without cochlear involvement and healthy controls. Another study found that patients with benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV) had significantly higher serum thyroid-stimulating hormone and antithyroid autoantibody levels than healthy controls. Additionally, almost one-fifth of euthyroid patients with HT had signs of BPPV. CONCLUSION: The published results indicate that patients with MD or BPPV are potential candidates to also develop HT. Thus, in HT patients, the presence of even slight symptoms or signs potentially related to vestibular lesions should be carefully investigated. ABBREVIATIONS: AITD = autoimmune thyroid disease; BPPV = benign paroxysmal positional vertigo; EH = endolymphatic hydrops; HT = Hashimoto thyroiditis; L-T4 = L-thyroxine; MD = Ménière disease; PS = Pendred syndrome; Tg = thyroglobulin; TPO = thyroid peroxidase; TSH = thyroid-stimulating hormone

ADVANCED ENGLISH COMPOSITION FOR JAPANESE BUSINESSPEOPLE : EFFECTIVE LETTERS AND DR. LEON F. KENMAN

For the last few years I have endeavored to offer textbooks on effective business writing, as well as glossaries and dictionaries of English for business and finance. (Hashimoto, 1994a) On the problem of effective business writing I have summarized the teaching methodology and techniques of my Japanese colleagues and myself and compared them with those of native English teachers in Japan. (Hashimoto, 1994b) In the second paper I have exemplified different approaches undertaken by native and non-native English teachers. Yet I must continue to investigate proper texts of business communication, especially for non-native users of English. As one of the steps of my endeavor, I will publish shortly a completely revised and updated Japanese edition of Effective Letters-A Program for Self-Instruction (Reid, James M., Jr., and Wendlinger, Robert M., 1978) with an introductory remark by Dr. Leon F. Kenman on "Advanced English Composition for Japanese Businesspeople."departmental bulletin pape

F-rationality of the ring of modular invariants

Using the description of the Frobenius limit of modules over the ring of invariants under an action of a finite group on a polynomial ring over a field of characteristic p>0 developed by Symonds and the author, we give a characterization of the ring of invariants with a positive dual F-signature. Combining this result and Kemper's result on depths of the ring of invariants under an action of a permutation group, we give an example of an F-rational, but non-F-regular ring of invariants under the action of a finite group

Association between hashimoto thyroiditis and differentiated thyroid cancer: A single-center experience

    No full text
Hashimoto’s thyroiditis is the most common cause of hypothyroidism in the iodine-sufficient areas of the world. Differentiated thyroid cancer is the most common thyroid cancer subtype, accounting for more than 95% of cases, and it is considered a tumor with a good prognosis, although a certain number of patients experience a poor clinical outcome. Hashimoto’s thyroiditis has been found to coexist with differentiated thyroid cancer in surgical specimens, but the relationship between these two entities has not yet been clarified. Our study aims to analyze the relationship between these two diseases, highlighting the incidence of histological diagnosis of Hashimoto thyroiditis in differentiated thyroid cancer patients, and assess how this autoimmune disorder influences the risk of structural disease recurrence and recurrence rate

    Variations on the Author

“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

Frequency Domain Two-Stage Beamforming for Phased Array Imaging Using the Fast Hankel Transform

    No full text
The huge amount of data that needs to be transferred between probe and imaging system becomes a major issue when the data transfer capacity is limited, e.g. in handheld systems, wireless probes and miniaturized probes. The amount of data can be significantly reduced by using two-stage beamforming. The first stage consists of a fixed focus algorithm that compresses channel data to scanline data. This can be done by integrated electronics in the handle. In the second stage the scanline data is further beamformed in the imaging system to obtain images that are synthetically focused at all depths. Here we present a wave equation two-stage beamforming method for phased array imaging that is computationally efficient and outperforms PSASB, a time-of-flight alternative, in terms of lateral resolution and contrast-to-noise ratio.Accepted Author ManuscriptImPhys/Acoustical Wavefield ImagingImPhys/Quantitative Imagin
