Una isla propia: sobre una novela poemática de Azorín

    No full text
La isla sin aurora is a novel in which the author during his lifetime has collected his ideas regarding the creation of art and aesthetic pleasure. The novel became for Azorin not only a literary genre but also a genre of his life. Moreover, the poetry freed from a specific mould became the essence of people and things. The real writer has put aside the particular to delve into the universal meaning of our species. Each artist makes the journey through their particular island and upon arrival realizes that the most important work of the writer is the process of self discovery and self realisation.

Abstract: This article proposes a scenic reading of the book Diario de una enfermera written by the Spanish author Isla Correyero, i.e. the paradigmatic scenes in the text are located and described, which especially refer to the experience of one’s own death and the death of the other. As a starting point to the set of poems, the hybridization of the lyric-poetic genre with autobiographical and memorialistic speech is highlighted. At the same time, possible dialogues and preliminary intertextual relations with Diario de Muerte by Enrique Lihn y Veneno de escorpión azul by Gonzalo Millán are suggested. St. Andrews University, Fundación MarViva, The Nature Conservancy and the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute provided the funding for this research. The Hannibal Bank sits within the Coiba UNESCO World Heritage Site in Pacific Panama and is also a fisheries management zone. Despite the protected status of the area and the importance of the Bank for commercial fish species such as snapper and tuna, the seamount has received no detailed survey except some collection of organisms. This study mapped the major topographic features and complexity of the Hannibal Bank seamount using acoustic remote sensing. A survey area of around 125km2 was defined using existing charts and side-scan sonar data were collected during July 2008. A bathymetric output was imported to ArcGIS where a digital bathymetric model and slope map were created. The Benthic Terrain Modeler (BTM) extension for ArcGIS was used to calculate bathymetric position index and rugosity, and used to create a map of zones representing the various seabed morphology zones. The Hannibal bank is an elongated, triangular guyot (flat topped seamount), which ranges in depth from 53m to 416m, covers an area of 76km2 and is 14.4km long and 7.1km wide. Hannibal bank is composed of steep slopes, more gentle slopes, top of the seamount, crests (elevated ridges at the top of the pinnacles), rugose areas (on crests, top of seamount and slope), gullies and pinnacles. The bank is asymmetric in nature with the Northerly side having a relatively gentle slope with gullies across the surface compared to the SouthWest side which is far steeper and more rugose. There are two pinnacles to the North and South East of the bank that range in depth from 180 to 333m. Rocky substrate makes up 22.6km2 of the bank and sediment 37.8km2 . The bank and its steeply sided, rugose areas and pinnacles provide upright structures which can disrupt and topographically enhance currents, increasing productivity. The rugose areas of Hannibal Bank should be primary targets for further research efforts as they may contain corals and their rugosity indicates that these should be some of the highest faunal diversity areas of the bank. Hannibal Bank is likely to come increasing pressure in the future through climate change and fishing and this study has produced valuable information to assist in the future mapping and management of habitats, associated species and fisheries.Peer reviewe

The Translator's Task: Recreating the Textual Atmosphere of Isla Cofre Mítico by Eugenio Fernández Granell

    No full text
In this dissertation, I introduce the Spanish painter, poet, essayist, and novelist Eugenio Fernández Granell and his seminal surrealist work, Isla cofre mítico. Granell was born in Galicia, Spain, in 1912 and can easily be described as a key figure within the surrealist movement in the second half of the twentieth century. Isla cofre mítico was Granell’s first published book, and it is the fullest published discussion about André Breton’s short work Martinique charmeuse de serpents, giving followers of Surrealism a deeper understanding of Breton’s time in Martinique. When you first pick up Granell’s book Isla cofre mítico, you are immediately struck by the cover’s fantastic, mythical creature composed of vibrant colors and amorphous features. The image is a pictorial representation of Granell’s island book that is Isla cofre mítico. The book represents the act of translation in all senses of the word. In it, Granell translates his violent experiences from the Spanish Civil War into words and images. He translates the foreign sights and sounds of the Caribbean geography and culture as he tries to make sense of the place that becomes his temporary home. He translates his experience of the world in the aftermath of the Second World War. For Granell, the aesthetic vision of André Breton is the only mode of expression capable of translating his experiences and thoughts into visual images and words. Isla cofre mítico is a visual, textual, and auditory experiment in translation for the original author and for me, the translator. In Isla cofre mítico, Granell translates the soundscapes of the island through the sounds created in and between words. He translates French passages from André Breton’s Martinique charmeuse de serpents into Spanish, as well as passages from other literary texts and historical documents. He translates images into words, and he juxtaposes words to produce sound and create meaning. How does one approach the translation of such a complex work? This dissertation presents an analysis of the complex textual environment of Granell’s text as well as my interpretive act of translation. I present a number of considerations for the translation process, including approaches to recreating complex patterns of repetition and textual musicality. I highlight the problematic role of textual ambiguity created by the author as translator from French into Spanish and my role as translator from Spanish into English. I also bring in translators who have contributed to the discussion of translation as an act of violence, and I attempt to demonstrate that Granell challenges previous notions of translation violence through his clashes of textual juxtapositions

The systematics and genetics of tomatoes on the Galápagos Islands (Solanum, Solanaceae)

Galápagos tomatoes (Solanum section Lycopersicon) have long interested scientists and plant breeders. Several morphological and physiological characters found in the endemic Galápagos tomatoes have been bred into the cultivated Solanum lycopersicum, making the native plants an invaluable resource for the development of this important global crop. Extensive fieldwork was carried out on twelve islands, old records were confirmed, new records added, but several previously recorded populations of endemic tomatoes could not be confirmed. I collected tomatoes from 12 islets and Islands. Detailed morphometric analysis on c.400 plants and extensive genetic studies on c.1,200 plants were carried out in addition to fieldwork and natural history studies. Observations and experiments were carried out on herbarium specimens, field collected and green house grown accessions. I confirmed the presence of four taxa in the Galápagos Islands – two endemic species S. cheesmaniae and S. galapagense, the latter here described as new, and two introduced species S. pimpinellifolium and S. lycopersicum. Hybrids were found involving all taxa growing in the Galápagos Islands. Of particular interest is an extensive hybrid zone between S. cheesmaniae and S. pimpinellifolium spanning 20km along the Baltra Road on Isla Santa Cruz. Hybridization raises the threat of extinction by introgression and the possibility of the evolution of a serious invasive species. Conservation recommendations are proposed. In addition, a genetic analysis was undertaken of 60 seed bank accessions of all four tomato species from the Galápagos. Again, indications of hybridization were found, raising the potential of introgression within the seed bank collections, occurring potentially during rejuvenation cycles. Furthermore, I propose a new outline for a generic invasive species threat/impact scoring system. Applying this new system I class Solanum pimpinellifolium as an alien invasive species and assess its impact on Isla Santa Cruz in the Galápagos Islands
