A 3D flexible neural interface based on a microfluidic interconnection cable capable of chemical delivery

    No full text
Abstract The demand for multifunctional neural interfaces has grown due to the need to provide a better understanding of biological mechanisms related to neurological diseases and neural networks. Direct intracerebral drug injection using microfluidic neural interfaces is an effective way to deliver drugs to the brain, and it expands the utility of drugs by bypassing the blood–brain barrier (BBB). In addition, uses of implantable neural interfacing devices have been challenging due to inevitable acute and chronic tissue responses around the electrodes, pointing to a critical issue still to be overcome. Although neural interfaces comprised of a collection of microneedles in an array have been used for various applications, it has been challenging to integrate microfluidic channels with them due to their characteristic three-dimensional structures, which differ from two-dimensionally fabricated shank-type neural probes. Here we present a method to provide such three-dimensional needle-type arrays with chemical delivery functionality. We fabricated a microfluidic interconnection cable (µFIC) and integrated it with a flexible penetrating microelectrode array (FPMA) that has a 3-dimensional structure comprised of silicon microneedle electrodes supported by a flexible array base. We successfully demonstrated chemical delivery through the developed device by recording neural signals acutely from in vivo brains before and after KCl injection. This suggests the potential of the developed microfluidic neural interface to contribute to neuroscience research by providing simultaneous signal recording and chemical delivery capabilities

Colloidal Single-Layer Quantum Dots with Lateral Confinement Effects on 2D Exciton

    No full text
Controlled lateral quantum confinement in single-layer transition-metal chalcogenides (TMCs) can potentially combine the unique properties of two-dimensional (2D) exciton with the size-tunability of exciton energy, creating the single-layer quantum dots (SQDs) of 2D TMC materials. However, exploring such opportunities has been challenging due to the limited ability to produce well-defined SQDs with sufficiently high quality and size control, in conjunction with the commonly observed inconsistency in the optical properties. Here, we report an effective method to synthesize high-quality and size-controlled SQDs of WSe2 via multilayer quantum dots (MQDs) precursors, which enables grasping a clear picture of the role of lateral confinement on the optical properties of the 2D exciton. From the single-particle optical spectra and polarization anisotropy of WSe2 SQDs of varying sizes in addition to their ensemble data, we reveal how the properties of 2D exciton in single-layer TMCs evolve with increasing lateral quantum confinement. © 2016 American Chemical Society110111sciescopu

Graded synthetic approach for the fabrication of nanocrystal quantum dots for enhanced carrier injection in light-emitting diodes

    No full text
A synthetic approach for fabricating compositionally graded multishell nanocrystal quantum dots (NQDs) from cubic CdSe is presented. The structural shapes with each shell formation were examined using scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) coupled with energy dispersive x-ray spectroscopy and electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS). The optical properties probed via time-resolved spectroscopy further revealed detailed carrier behavior at the core/graded shell interface. A highly luminescing stable optical device was built using our graded multishell NQDs

TemporalWiki: A Lifelong Benchmark for Training and Evaluating Ever-Evolving Language Models

    No full text
Language Models (LMs) become outdated as the world changes; they often fail to perform tasks requiring recent factual information which was absent or different during training, a phenomenon called temporal misalignment. This is especially a challenging problem because the research community still lacks a coherent dataset for assessing the adaptability of LMs to frequently-updated knowledge corpus such as Wikipedia. To this end, we introduce TEMPORALWIKI, a lifelong benchmark for ever-evolving LMs that utilizes the difference between consecutive snapshots of English Wikipedia and English Wikidata for training and evaluation, respectively. The benchmark hence allows researchers to periodically track an LM's ability to retain previous knowledge and acquire updated/new knowledge at each point in time. We also find that training an LM on the diff data through continual learning methods achieves similar or better perplexity than on the entire snapshot in our benchmark with 12 times less computational cost, which verifies that factual knowledge in LMs can be safely updated with minimal training data via continual learning. The dataset and the code is made available at this link

CORPO EM FLAMAS: SILÊNCIO, RUPTURA E VIOLÊNCIA DA PALAVRA EM A VEGETARIANA (채식주의자/CHAESIKJUIJA) DE HAN KANG

    No full text
This article aims to explore the relationship between body, silence, rupture and violence of the word in the novel The Vegetarian (Chaesik-juija/채식주의자) (2007) by the South Korean writer Han Kang. The analysis has as starting point the discussion of the rupture and the violence of the word from interviews of the writer Han Kang and the theoretical work of Jacques Derrida. The discussion of the female body will be based on Judith Butler’s theory of gender and on criticism of Sohee Kim’s Neo-Confucian philosophy in South Korea.
