Applications of signaling theory to contemporary human courtship

    No full text
Signaling theory, a popular approach in ethology and theoretical biology, can be employed to better understand social interaction in humans. Applied to contemporary human courtship, signaling theory can provide a framework for interpreting information transmitted at an initial encounter, signals conveyed at key relationship phases both within a romantic couple and to outside parties, and the regular communicative exchange within established relationships. This dissertation applies signaling theory to courtship in testing evolutionary hypotheses within three projects, each involving a different subject population situated at a salient courtship phase. The first project addresses the signaling value of women's faces absent any other information, which is analogous to a first meeting prior to the beginning of courtship. Testosterone-mediated facial features were positively associated with viewer perceptions of masculinity, positively associated with self-reports of sociosexual attitudes and behaviors, and negatively associated with viewer perceptions of attractiveness. The second project explores the signaling potential of engagement rings among a sample of Ohio newlyweds. Engagement ring cost was positively associated with male income and female income, and was negatively associated with female age, indicating that engagement ring cost may reflect both male and female mate value. The cost of engagement rings as a proportion of male salary was positively associated with courtship duration, suggesting that engagement ring cost may reinforce a signal of commitment already conveyed by a lengthy courtship. The third project concerns notions of spousal obligation on the Honduran island of Utila. This project used an experimental interview setting to elicit and measure audience effects. In response to key questions about characteristics sought in wives, men interviewed in the presence of their wives used more forceful rhetoric. Furthermore, men's responses more frequently emphasized women's morality whereas women's responses more frequently emphasized male resource control.Ph.D.Includes bibliographical referencesIncludes vitaby Bria Lane Dunha

An empirical examination of a three-component model of professional commitment among public accountants

    No full text
Professional commitment (PC) refers to the attachments that individuals form to their profession. While prior accounting literature has examined only one dimension of PC, research outside accounting has established that there are three distinct dimensions to PC (Hall et al. 2005). In this paper we test the validity of Meyer et al.'s (1993) three‐component model of PC among a sample of public accountants. Given that the majority of studies of accountants' PC have used the Professional Commitment Questionnaire (PCQ), we also assess whether the PCQ is a measure of a specific dimension of PC, affective PC. The results of our confirmatory factor analyses and tests of reliability and validity provide support for three separate dimensions of public accountants' PC. Our tests also indicate that the PCQ scale is a measure of affective PC. The implications of our results on interpreting prior research and for considering future research on accountants' PC are presented

From home to hospital: sustainable transfers of care in the United States

    No full text
Due to a range of factors, including but not limited to obstetric complications, a person who had planned to give birth at home may be transferred to a hospital setting. These transfers of care can be facilitated in a sustainable manner by maintaining the pregnant individual’s support personnel, avoiding unnecessary replication of tests and procedures, limiting obstetric interventions to those medically indicated and desired by the pregnant individual, and eliminating the fragmentation of care between sites and providers during the transfer. The Best Practice Guidelines for transfers of planned homebirths to hospital settings, as developed by delegates to the Home Birth Summit, provide a humanized framework for these transfers that may be all the more urgent during disruptive times and for pregnant individuals who face additional vulnerabilities.Accepted manuscrip

Assessing the role of childhood physical abuse at the hands of a caregiver in the development of sex addiction in adulthood

    No full text
The author provides a critical review of the etiology of sex addiction and its relationship to childhood physical abuse. The author selected and reviewed current literature of perceived causes of sex addiction and determined strengths and limitations of each study. The author provides a review of common themes in the literature and implications for clinicians treating sex addiction in those who have experienced childhood physical abuse with an attachment-based approach

The author restores the ancient name of Wroxeter, given as Viroconium in most sources, with the form Vrioconium [Cornovium]. The first element wrio-is an Indo-european name for “ stronghold”, attested in Thracian (Bria), Messapic (Uria), Tokharian (A ri, B, riye) ; any connection with Mycenian ri-jo-seems problematic.L’auteur restitue le nom antique de Wroxeter, le plus souvent Viroconium dans les sources, sous la forme Vrioconium [Cornovium].
