Title: Influence of Spherical and Cylindrical Capsules on Pressure Transients in Hydraulic Pipelines, Author: Rajbir S. Samra, Location: ThodeThe influence of capsules on pressure transients in hydraulic pipelines has been reported in this dissertation. This experimental investigation was carried out for flow velocities of 1 to 4 ft/sec. for both cylindrical and spherical capsules. Shock waves were generated by a fast closing valve in a 1 in. diameter pipe and pressure transients were measured for a train of cylindrical capsules of diameter 0.875 in. and 0.95 in. The spherical capsules were of diameter 0.75 in. and 0.875 in. A theoretical analysis for this type of waterhammer problem using a perturbation technique has been obtained. The theoretical solution was found to be in agreement with the experimental observations for cylindrical capsules.ThesisMaster of Engineering (ME

TITLE: The representation of a woman in Jasmina Musabegović's novel Skretnice AUTHOR: Bc. Samra Kovač DEPARTMENT: Institute of Ethnology and Central European and Balkan Studies SUPERVISOR: doc. PhDr. Alenka Jensterle Doležal, CSc ABSTRACT: The topic of the thesis is the analysis of the 1986 novel Skretnice by Bosnian author Jasmina Musabegović (1941), especially with regard to the position of women and their image in the novel. From a gender perspective, we will be interested in her psychological profile in relation to the other characters, especially in the question of her intimacy and relationship with the other gender. The aim of the thesis will be to explore the position of the woman or her emancipation. Another aim will be to present the inner world of the woman and her experience of the patriarchal world. The thesis will include a literary analysis as well as a study of the historical, cultural and social aspects of the Bosnian reality. I will focus on the period of the modern realist novel, in which modernity is represented by the suggestiveness of the new Bosnian prose and its structure, and I will present the analysis in the context of Bosnian and South Slavic prose at the end of the 20th century. KEYWORDS: Bosnian literature, Jasmina Musabegović, picture of woman in literature, modern women..

NÁZEV: Obraz ženy v románu Jasminy Musabegović Skretnice AUTOR: Bc. Samra Kovač KATEDRA: Ústav etnologie a středoevropských a balkánských studií VEDOUCÍ PRÁCE: doc. PhDr. Z hlediska genderové perspektivy nás bude zajímat její psychologický profil vzhledem k jiným postavám, a především otázka její intimity a vztahu k jiném pohlaví. Cílem práce bude prozkoumat pozici ženy, respektive její emancipaci. Dalším cílem bude představit vnitřní svět ženy a její zkušenost s patriarchálním světem.

Resilience and Agency in Samra Habib's We Have Always Been Here: A Queer Muslim Memoir

The interconnection between vulnerability, resilience, and agency will be used as a critical framework for the study of Samra Habib’s We Have Always Been Here: A Queer Muslim Memoir. More specifically, this chapter will examine the mechanisms developed by the author to subvert the social norms and oppressive traditional structures that force many women in Pakistan to behave according to prescribed social and cultural norms. In doing so, this chapter attempts to highlight the agency of many women who break silence and contest their roles in society in order to overcome their position as vulnerable victims, regain their agency and finally reconstruct their own identities. Finally, this chapter questions and denounces the normative framework that denies the existence of some gender identities categorized as non-normative

Suicide ideation in different generations of immigrants

Objective: To identify whether pressures associated with acculturation are related to suicide ideation. Method: We assessed 1135 undergraduates, using suicide measures and the Vancouver Index of Acculturation. Results and Conclusions: Suicide ideation, plans, and attempts did not vary by generation level or with mainstream acculturation for any of the ethnic groups studied (European, Chinese, and Indo-Asian), nor did they vary among ethnic groups. The results indicate that individuals who identified closely with their heritage culture were at an increased risk for suicidal thoughts but not for suicide plans or attempts.Peer reviewedFinal article publishedsuicideethnic identit

The modulation of enteropathogenic E. coli infection by substrate stiffness

    No full text
Enteropathogenic Escherichia coli (EPEC) is a Gram-negative foodborne bacterium that has been associated with many severe diarrhea outbreaks worldwide, especially in children under the age of five. EPEC is a pathogen that infects intestinal epithelial cells and causes several conditions ranging from asymptomatic colonization of the intestine to morbidity and even lethality. A hallmark of an EPEC infection is the formation of “attaching and effacing” histopathological lesions at the surface of enterocytes that are characterized by the destruction of the brush border microvilli and the formation of actin-rich pedestals beneath the bacterial attachment site. Like many Gram-negative bacteria, EPEC employs the Type III Secretion System (T3SS) to inject effector proteins essential for its infectivity, including its own receptor Tir, that lead to host cell cytoskeletal remodeling and promote the formation of these actin pedestals and intimate bacteria-host cell adherence. In addition to Tir, EPEC injects several other effector proteins that lead to various pathological phenotypes such as tight junction disruption, cell cycle arrest and apoptotic cell death. EPEC infection has been extensively studied using traditional tissue culture models; however, intestinal stiffness is more than 300,000 times softer than glass. Studying EPEC using polyacrylamide gels of physical compliance can provide a deeper understanding on its infection mechanism under mechanical conditions closer to its natural environment. Since substrate stiffness has known physiological effects on mammalian cytoskeletal organization and cell signaling, we hypothesize that tissue compliance will play an important role in the regulation of EPEC infection.M.S.Includes bibliographical reference
