Peace between Peace(s)? : Urban Peace and the Coexistence of Antagonists in City Spaces
No full textThe plurality and subjectivity of peace means that transitions from war are contested – i.e. permeated by conflicts between previously warring antagonists who want to (re)order postwar society according to competing peace(s). But while there always will exist mutually excluding peace(s), such outliers do not foreclose middle grounds where multiple peace(s) can coexist. In this article, I argue that the postwar city can generate coexistence between peace(s) of varying divergence through the creativity, accommodation, and fragmentation of city spaces. These arguments are illustrated through examples from postwar Belfast, Mitrovica, and Mostar. I term this conceptualization urban peace.
“Follow us into basic training” - Discourse analysis on the construction of female soldiers in the German Armed Forces’ recruitment advertising
No full textAfter ending the formal exclusion of women from the German Armed Forces
(GAF) in 2000, female soldiers continued to retain an outsider status through a
marginalizing visual representation in public self-imaging by the GAF. For this
reason, the research explores whether the currently constructed image of public
self-advertising alters the previous exclusionary practice. Using theoretical
concepts of gender and discourse in combination with different categories female
soldiers are frequently placed into and the method of discourse analysis I, this
study shines light onto 17 videos of the GAF’s basic training web-series "Die
Rekrutinnen" featuring seven female recruits. The analysis suggests that the
recruits, though frequently presented as professional and equal on several
occasion, are still constructed as subordinate, focusing on perceived difference,
vulnerability and a ridiculed learning process especially in regards to weapons
training, presenting an important domain of the military. Therefore, the current
constructions of female soldiers in the material, though globally more balanced
regarding previous research, yet subtly places women into a symbolically inferior
position and thereby maintains a dominant male status of the German military
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
Get PDFThe present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

No full textThere is a global concern for climate induced migration and a concern on how to tackle climate refugees. Climate refugees is a term that is not yet defined both internationally and at a European Union level. This thesis is researching the relation between climate refugees and the European Union. By using a critical discourse analysis this thesis analyses the internal factors for the European Union not reaching a common definition for the term climate refugee. By using material from the EU official website this thesis focuses on the textual, discursive and social practices based in Fairclough’s three dimensional model. This thesis found five factors for the European Union not reaching a common definition: the view on security, the lack of responsibility, financial and national interests and a view on that climate refugees are not a European problem

Get PDF“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
Get PDFWe provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. The Impact of Creative Ambiguity - A Case Study of the Aftermath of the Kosovo-Serbia Brussels Agreement 2013
No full textCreative ambiguity as a negotiation strategy is used often in peace agreements and refers to when ambiguities are used in agreements to serve as a positive motivation to get over obstacles. While it has many positive impacts, the use of creative ambiguity also often times shifts the burden of the negotiation phase to the implementations phase, and thus can result into agreements that are not implemented as well as plummeting the relations between the parties affected. This thesis aims to understand how the use of creative ambiguity in the Brussels Agreement between Kosovo and Serbia had an impact on the heightened conflict between the countries. This thesis is a single instrumental case study that illustrates the issue of creative ambiguity through the case of the Brussels Agreement. Through analysing interferences from material mainly collected from both countries’ government websites, this study conducted that the use of creative ambiguity had a harmful impact not only on the relations between Kosovo and Serbia, but also on the implementation of the agreement
