Joe Wright (1952-1990) and Ben Chavis (1948-) were members of the Wilmington Ten, who were accused and convicted during the riots of 1971 of firebombing a white-owned grocery store in Wilmington, as well as shooting emergency workers who responded to the blaze. The sentences of all of the members of the Ten were commuted after several years, but they did not receive a full pardon until January 4, 2013 from outgoing Governor Beverly Perdue. Peter Greer (1944-) is a Wilmington attorney who ran for City Council in 1977. In 1984 Jesse Jackson (1941-) campaigned the first time for President of the United States

Peter Torres was born to Cuban parents in Miami, Florida, and later moved to Puerto Rico with his family. He was educated in Catholic schools and eventually attended Loyola University in New Orleans. After graduating, he joined the National Guard and later pursued a career in mortgage banking. Peter's upbringing in Puerto Rico was filled with family traditions and delicious meals cooked by his grandmother. Going grocery shopping at a nearby agrocenter was an adventure, where live animals roamed freely and livestock were sold in the butcher's shop. Peter talks about his early childhood and, growing up in Puerto Rico.Peter Torres nació de padres cubanos en Miami, Florida, y luego se mudó con su familia a Puerto Rico, donde creció rodeado de una rica herencia cultural. Recibió su educación en escuelas católicas y luego asistió a la Universidad Loyola en Nueva Orleans. Después de graduarse, se unió a la Guardia Nacional y luego emprendió una exitosa carrera en banca hipotecaria.
