Acidi grassi e qualità spermatica
No full textNegli ultimi anni, l’aumento della prevalenza dell’obesità è stato correlato a un decremento del potenziale riproduttivo nell’uomo.
Sempre più evidenze scientifiche suggeriscono che la supplementazione della dieta con acidi grassi abbia un impatto sulla qualità e la funzionalità degli spermatozoi. In particolare, è stato osservato che diete ricche di SFA e povere di PUFA compromettono la qualità spermatica, mentre la supplementazione con PUFA ne determina un miglioramento. A tal proposito, utilizzando modelli animali nei quali è stato possibile indurre una condizione di obesità mediante la somministrazione di diete iperlipidiche, recenti studi hanno dimostrato che la somministrazione di MUFA è in grado di contrastare gli effetti negativi indotti da una dieta ad alto contenuto in grassi, aumentando la motilità dei gameti, riducendo lo stress ossidativo e migliorando l’efficienza del processo di respirazione mitocondriale. La somministrazione di PUFA, soprattutto quelli della serie n-3, invece, ha determinato un miglioramento ancora più marcato della qualità spermatica, associato ad un aumento della concentrazione e della motilità degli spermatozoi, ad un incremento delle attività degli enzimi mitocondriali coinvolti nel metabolismo energetico degli spermatozoi e a una riduzione del danno ossidativo.
Questi risultati contribuiscono, da un alto, a chiarire i meccanismi molecolari mediante i quali MUFA e PUFA agiscono su alterazioni metaboliche causate dalla somministrazione di una dieta ricca di grassi, che spesso caratterizza le abitudini alimentari delle popolazioni occidentali. D’altro canto, essi suggeriscono che gli acidi grassi introdotti con la dieta sono in grado di influenzare positivamente la qualità e la funzionalità degli spermatozoi, fornendo un nuovo e interessante approccio per il trattamento dell’infertilità maschile legata all’obesità
Challenging bio- and eco-coronas in marine nano-ecotoxicology
No full textIn meeting the challenges associated with the study of nano-sized objects, a major area of research is
represented by the interaction of nanoparticles (NPs) with biological systems. Owing to their
characteristics, NPs interact in a fundamentally different fashion with biological entities than
molecular species. When in contact with biological fluids, the particle surface is covered by a layer
of adsorbed proteins and other biomolecules, in dynamic equilibrium with the surrounding
environment, termed the “biomolecular corona”, which provide the as-synthesized particle with a
unique biological identity. While within the field of nanotoxicology the importance of the study of
the biomolecular corona has been largely recognized as key to untangle the complicate interactions
of NPs with cells, environmental toxicology has just begun to consider the study of coronas in facing
the upcoming issue of NP pollution of the marine ecosystems. The main aim of this PhD was to
investigate the interactions of NPs with biomolecules in the marine environment in order to
understand their ecotoxicological implications. As a proxy of the emerging issue of plastic
contamination of marine ecosystems, polystyrene nanoparticles, with positive and negative surface
charges, were employed throughout the study. Firstly, the nanoparticles interactions with the sea
urchin Paracentrotus lividus, as a model invertebrate species, were considered. The biological
identity of positive and negative polystyrene nanoparticles entails the potential to promote particlecell
association, by assisting their interaction with the highly specialized immune systems of P.
lividus. Both positive and negative particles maintained hydrodynamic sizes indicative of a narrow
size distributions, mostly encompassing protein coated monomers and dimers, acquiring a net
negative surface charge. The observed corona-derived colloidal stability over time suggests that,
irrespectively of initial surface charge, in the biological milieu polystyrene nanoparticles can acquire
the same physical-chemical characteristics, possibly being presented for bio-nano interactions in a
comparable manner. The role of an adsorbed protein in promoting the association of positivelycharged
polystyrene nanoparticles was proven to lead to toxic effects sustained by the phagocytic
immune cells of the sea urchin, confirming that biomolecular coronas dictate the biological fate of
nanoparticles in marine invertebrate species, with a mode of action comparable to what established
in “classical” nanotoxicology. The subsequent studies focused on polystyrene NPs in marine waters,
as a primary target of their release in the environment. In such abiotic, yet biomolecule rich,
environment the interaction with extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) extruded by ubiquitous
photoautotrophic planktonic species (e.g. diatoms and cyanobacteria) determine the particle fate. The formation of an “eco-corona” reverses the typical colloidal behavior of positive and negative
polystyrene NPs, as solely determined by surface charge, when in high-salinity media. Here,
positively-charged particles underwent remarkable aggregation while negative ones were stabilized
and aggregates formation was limited upon interaction with EPS, prospecting an opposite
environmental destiny in marine ecosystems. Surface charge influenced ecotoxicity, with negative
PS NPs being generally non-toxic to microalgae and cyanobacteria. Positively-charge counterparts,
however, caused loss of cell viability and oxidative stress, but such effects were significantly reduced
when an eco-corona was present, suggesting a buffering action carried out by the adsorbed EPS layer,
capable of limiting direct NP-cell interactions and their resulting noxious effects. Overall, a
multifaceted scenario for bio-nano interactions in the marine environment emerges from this study,
with important ecotoxicological implications. If biological recognition of the biomolecular corona
seems the underlying mechanism to ecotoxic effects in complex biological milieus, mere physical
effects entailed by the eco-corona may be responsible for modulating the toxicity of NPs dispersed in
seawater. This fundamentally different characters of bio-nano interactions forecast an additional
dimension of complexity of nano-ecotoxicological research in the marine environment, worthy of
being considered in future studies
The anatomy of houses: Materialities of being at home
No full textThis introductory essay proposes a reflection that discusses, reframes, and presents the thematic section hosted in this volume, that investigates houses at the intersection between recent trends in the anthropology of the house, the study of material culture, and the investigation of contemporary socio-cultural transformations. In the first paragraph, we contextualize the growing contemporary interest in houses. In the second, following Carsten, we sustain the idea that houses themselves should be placed at the heart of a research agenda, we present the approach proposed in this thematic section, we clarify what are houses and what distinguishes them in relation to homes and households and how, in the history of anthropology, these “objects” have been investigated. In the third paragraph, reviewing the main approaches to the theme, we delve into the notion of société à maisons elaborated by Lévi-Strauss. The fourth paragraph places the concreteness of houses back at the centre of the analysis, where normative and material forms are mediated, reproduced, and even contested or negotiated. In the last, we present the three articles hosted in this thematic section – and the afterword discussing them – that explore how houses and their materiality modify the world and deal with its transformations.Questo saggio introduttivo propone una riflessione che discute, contestualizza e presenta la sezione tematica ospitata in questo volume, che indaga le case all’intersezione tra le recenti tendenze dell’antropologia della casa, lo studio della cultura materiale e l’indagine delle trasformazioni socio-culturali contemporanee. Nel primo paragrafo, contestualizziamo il crescente interesse contemporaneo per le case. Nel secondo, seguendo Carsten, sosteniamo l’idea che le case stesse debbano essere poste al centro di un’agenda di ricerca, presentiamo l’approccio proposto in questa sezione tematica, chiariamo cosa si intenda con “house” e cosa la distingua dai concetti di “home” e “household” e come, nella storia dell’antropologia, questi “oggetti” siano stati indagati. Nel terzo paragrafo, passando in rassegna i principali approcci al tema, approfondiamo la nozione di société à maisons elaborata da Lévi-Strauss. Il quarto paragrafo rimette al centro dell’analisi la concretezza delle case, dove le forme normative e materiali sono mediate, riprodotte e persino contestate o negoziate. O primeiro capítulo traz uma breve contextualização do cenário histórico-literário do século XIX, que evidencia os acontecimentos que geraram o intenso debate entre Classicistas e Românticos, e contempla o percurso do autor de Recanati nessa discussão. O segundo capítulo aborda o Epistolario e o Zibaldone, à luz dos gêneros literários, e evidencia a importância deles no conjunto da obra do autor de Recanati. O terceiro capítulo apresenta uma análise dos principais aspectos sobre tradução discutidos pelo autor italiano, dos quais destacam-se: a tradução como exercício para se tornar um importante escritor; a importância da retradução dos Clássicos; a questão da (in)intraduzibilidade; a fidelidade ao original e a questão da língua no que diz respeito ao estilo, ao caráter e à adaptabilidade na tradução.Abstract : This dissertation analyzes the reflections on translation by Giacomo Leopardi (1798-1837) found in Epistolario (1807-1837) and Zibaldone di Pensieri (1817-1832), within the period from 1817 to 1832 through a comparative study. The first chapter presents a brief contextualization of the 19th century historical and literary scenery, that highlight the events which generated the intense debate between Classicists and Romantics, and it thinks over the path of Recanati#s author in this discussion. The second chapter approaches Epistolario and Zibaldone, under the light of literary genres, and highlight their importance within the entire work of Recanati#s author. The third chapter presents an analysis of the main aspects on translation discussed by the Italian author, which include: the translation as an exercise to become a good writer, the importance of retranslation of the Classics, the issue of (in)translatability; fidelity and the question of the original language with regard to style, the character and adaptability in translation
Context-aware Readings with Inbooki
No full textE-books are more and more spreading among readers, who take advantage from the capability of reading them
on different devices and of storing a whole library of books in a light and portable device. What is still missing
is a technology that enables not only the adaptation to the exploited device, but also to the context in which
the books are read. The experience of the users can be more immersive if the flow of the book content can be
modified by the reading device depending on different aspects related to the moment and place of reading.
To overcome this limit, we have developed Inbooki, a system for writing and reading e-books that can take
into consideration the context in which they are read and can adapt to it, making the experience of the readers
more immersive in the story told by the book. The proposed model of the context take into consideration the
information from the device sensors, the user profile, and the user choices
