    Near-Earth Asteroid and Meteorite Source Regions: The Big Picture

    International audience"Where do meteorites come from?" has been an enduring question in planetary science, placing "traceability" (e.g. sample return) at the forefront of current exploration. Towards this goal, orbits for 2 dozen recovered meteorite falls have been determined by dedicated teams over many decades. Herewith we now add the orbits for more than 1000 near-Earth asteroids (NEAs) for which we have telescopic spectral measurements [1] sufficient to make meteorite analog assessments. For hundreds of these NEAs, their meteorite analogs have a high degree of confidence to specific classes (e.g. H, L, LL chondrites) based on detailed mineralogical modeling [2] tested against the ground truth from the Hayabusa mission [3]. As independent variables, we correlate each NEA's meteorite analog with its dynamical source region derived from the models by Granvik et al. [4,5] accounting for Yarkovsky drift and resonance delivery efficiencies. When ratioed to the overall flux rate for the diffusion of main-belt asteroids into the inner solar system, distinct source region signatures emerge for all major meteorite classes. Most interestingly, a high degree of correlation is found with respect to the compositional gradient in the asteroid belt [6,7], with the most primitive classes preferring an outer belt or Jupiter Family Comet origin. We integrate all of these results together into a new "Big Picture" view of where the major classes of meteorites come from. Observational data used in this research were obtained using the NASA Infrared Telescope Facility, which is operated by the University of Hawaii under contract NNH14CK55B with the National Aeronautics and Space Administration.     Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

    We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods

    I forbindelse med utbedring av E16 gjennom Valdres utførte Kulturhistorisk museum en utgravning av tre lokaliteter langs traseen i perioden 17. august til 23. oktober. Utgravningsområdene lå mellom Synshagen og Øylo og berøres ved utbygging av av E16 Kvamskleiva som er navnet på en av flere veiparseller. Under utgravningen ble det totalt avdekket 2 261 m² fordelt på tre lokaliteter. To av dem lå i dyrket mark på Kvam (Lok 1 og 2), mens en kullgrop og en røys lå i skog ved Granvik (Lok 3). Lok 1 omfattet bebyggelsesspor samt produksjonsspor i form av smie og koksteins-/bryggesteinslag. Flertallet av fornminnene representerer trolig utkanten av et større gårdskompleks datert til overgangen senmiddelalder og nyere tid. Lok 2 besto av dyrkningsspor som også kan knyttes til gårdskomplekset i middelalderen, men radiologiske dateringer indikerer at dyrkningen i området ble påbegynt allerede i jernalderen. På Lok 3 ble det avdekket en røys og en kullgrop, datert til hhv. bronsealder og middelalder. Prosjektleder: Ole Christian Lønaa

    Simulation of thermal plant optimization and hydraulic aspects of thermal distribution loops for large campuses

    Following an introduction, the author describes Texas A&M University and its utilities system. After that, the author presents how to construct simulation models for chilled water and heating hot water distribution systems. The simulation model was used in a $2.3 million Ross Street chilled water pipe replacement project at Texas A&M University. A second project conducted at the University of Texas at San Antonio was used as an example to demonstrate how to identify and design an optimal distribution system by using a simulation model. The author found that the minor losses of these closed loop thermal distribution systems are significantly higher than potable water distribution systems. In the second part of the report, the author presents the latest development of software called the Plant Optimization Program, which can simulate cogeneration plant operation, estimate its operation cost and provide optimized operation suggestions. The author also developed detailed simulation models for a gas turbine and heat recovery steam generator and identified significant potential savings. Finally, the author also used a steam turbine as an example to present a multi-regression method on constructing simulation models by using basic statistics and optimization algorithms. This report presents a survey of the author??s working experience at the Energy Systems Laboratory (ESL) at Texas A&M University during the period of January 2002 through March 2004. The purpose of the above work was to allow the author to become familiar with the practice of engineering. The result is that the author knows how to complete a project from start to finish and understands how both technical and nontechnical aspects of a project need to be considered in order to ensure a quality deliverable and bring a project to successful completion. This report concludes that the objectives of the internship were successfully accomplished and that the requirements for the degree of Degree of Engineering have been satisfied

    Debiased albedo distribution for Near Earth Objects

    We extend the most recent orbital – absolute magnitude Near Earth Object (NEO) model (Granvik et al., 2018) to provide a statistical description of NEO geometric albedos. Our model is calibrated on NEOWISE albedo data for the NEO population and reproduces these data very well once a simple model for the NEOWISE observational biases is applied. The results are consistent with previous estimates. There are ~1000 NEOs with diameter D &gt; 1 km and the mean albedo to convert absolute magnitude into diameter is 0.147. We don't find any statistically significant evidence that the albedo distribution of NEOs depends on NEO size. Instead, we find evidence that the disruption of NEOs at small perihelion distances found in Granvik et al. (2016) occurs preferentially for dark NEOs. The interval between km-sized bodies striking the Earth should occur on average once every 750,000 years. Low and high albedo NEOs are well mixed in orbital space, but a trend remains with higher albedo objects being at smaller semimajor axes and lower albedo objects more likely found at larger semimajor axes.Validerad;2020;Nivå 2;2020-12-02 (alebob)</p
