Hyun Jaemyeong’s Opera Chunhyang-Jeon: Ancient Traditions and Western Perspectives
abstract: ABSTRACT
Korea’s first opera Chunhyang Jeon was composed by Jaemyeong Hyun in 1948. Until that time, most Korean vocal music was sung by a few native traditional artists. Inspired by their work, composer Hyun combined elements from the ancient Pansori (epic poetic forms presented by a solo singer with drum) and Western music techniques to create his opera. Hyun also used the more vernacular Hangeul (Korean alphabet) for his libretto rather than the Chinese usually heard in Korean theatrical presentations. It might be noted that in that same year (1948), the first Western opera: Verdi’s La Traviata was performed in Seoul.
This study concerns the bringing together of Korean traditional idioms (in Pansori) and Western musical ideas (harmony, orchestration, etc.) to create what is now known as Chunhyang-jeon Opera. In this regard, the author will present a brief split-analysis of the older style and the more modern musical attributes of the combined style of traditional Korean music and European style opera. It is hoped that this study might provide the basis for a future opera course and guide for both disciplines.
This study will also show that the Pansori and its subsequent operatic treatment has historical, social and artistic elements. Some similarities and differences of both forms were noted here with regard to cultural sensitivities.
While Chunhyang-ga (older form) and Chunhyang-jeon (Hyun’s modern adaptation) have some musical similarities, the latter was not composed based on the former. Chunhyang-ga consists mainly of compound meter (6/8, 9/8, 12/8, 24/8), which is at the heart of Korean traditional music, while Chunhyang-jeon uses simple meter (2/4, 3/4, 4/4).
Identical words are not often used in the two works, but their libretti are of much significance. Chunhyang-ga had been traditionally handed down with Chinese characters, whereas Chunhyang-jeon constituted its libretto with more modern Korean words which were easily understood by the audience.
Pansori have been sung with traditional singing techniques, which demonstrate the flow of the melodic line found in the images of the words (as interpreted and improvised by the solo performer), while in opera, vocal music is primarily from a set of melodic and harmonic techniques.Dissertation/ThesisDoctoral Dissertation Music 201
[Review of] Peter Hyun. MAN SEI! The Making of a Korean American
This book offers a history of Korea from the tum of the century through the end of World War II. But it is more than that: It is an autobiographical account of Peter Hyun, who with his family, witnessed and participated in the making of modern Korean history. Hyun, born in 1907, was one of eight children who lived and went to school under Japanese rule. In 1919 he witnessed a massive demonstration in which thousands of Koreans shouted MAN SEI! -- Long Live Korea -- and watched as Japanese police and military killed countless demonstrators, hence the title of this book. The author\u27s father, the Rev. Soon Hyun, spent his career serving the Methodist church and leading the movement for Korean independence

'Giving honour to the Spirit' : a critical analysis and evaluation of the doctrine of pneumatological union in the Trinitarian theology of Jonathan Edwards in dialogue with Karl Barth
The extent to which the 'honour' of the Spirit influenced the theology of
Jonathan Edwards is a hitherto underdeveloped theme. Against a backdrop of
Patristic thought and in dialogue with the theology of Karl Barth, evaluation is
made of pneumatological union in Edwards' Trinitarian theology as this centres
on the nature and inter-relatedness of the 'three unions' that characterize his
theology: the union of the three Persons of the Trinity, the union of the saints
with God, and the union of the divine and human natures of Christ.
Edwards' seeks to honour the Spirit as the mutual love of the Father for the Son
within his Augustinian, Lockean model of the immanent Trinity, and as 'Person'
in the economy. The challenges of doing so within the limits of this
psychological model of the Trinity are evaluated in dialogue with the
Cappadocian Fathers and Barth.
In a manner patterned after union in the Trinity, Edwards gave prominence to the
concept of the pneumatological union of the saints with God in Christ, in
fulfilment of the self-glorifying purpose of God in creation and redemption.
Edwards' experiential theology of conversion, and his elevation of subjective
sanctification by the Spirit over objective justification in Christ, for assurance, is
contrasted with Barth's greater emphases on the Christological union of God
with humanity and objective justification in Christ. Barth's more contemplative
approach is contrasted with the overly introspective spirituality of Edwards.
Edwards' view of the role of the Spirit in the hypostatic union of God with
humanity in Christ, which is reflective of the other unions, is also evaluated in
light of Patristic, Reformed-Puritan and Barthian thought on the nature of the
humanity Christ assumed, and the doctrine of the vicarious humanity of Christ. A
more emphatic incarnational emphasis may have saved Edwards' Spirit-
honouring spirituality from an anthropocentricity which is ironical given that the
glory of God is his ontic doxological concern

A one period trinomial model is analysed assuming an exponential utility function.
Indifference pricing and hedging methods are extended to the case of Knightian uncertainty represented by the maxmin expected utility criterion by I. Gilboa & D. Schmeidler (1989, [35]).
Since the issuance of a contingent claim can change the reference belief, one must take into account how the worst case scenarios change with or without the contingent claim. In this paper, the optimal selection rule is characterized firstly, and some examples are presented
to show how to calculate indifference prices and optimal hedge ratios.
The second chapter investigates the problem of optimal hedging and pricing with Knightian uncertainty a la I. Gilboa & D. Schmeidler. We start with a simple one period model and extend it to multi-period models as Cox et al. did for the Black-Scholes model (1979, [15]).
We assume that the set of beliefs is convex and closed to utilize the min-max theorem. We also assume that for multi-period models, the set of beliefs satisfies the rectangularity defined as in Epstein & Schneider (2003, [30]) to ensure the time consistency of value functions.
In discrete time models, given the second moment of the risky asset the agent would choose his belief from risk neutral ones. So the hedging demand for the risky asset would be zero.
If the set of beliefs does not contain any risk neutral belief, he would choose the one which is closest to the set of risk neutral beliefs, which gives rise to hedging demand for the risky asset. If we admit the second moment of the risky asset vary, the problem would be more complex.
For the simplest case in which the set of beliefs consist of only risk neutral ones, the agent would choose one of the extreme beliefs according to comparision between the certainty equivalent values at future nodes. It turns out that the comparison is related to the second order derivative of the certainty equivalent value along spatial dimension. We could use the multi-period results and Taylor series expansion to derive the limitting equations, which are
formulated as a conjecture by the author. In doing this, we have to scale the set of beliefs according to the unit size of time steps. In the limiting case, it is demonstrated by an example that the process of indifference price satisfies the Black-Scholes-Barenblatt equation, which is a kind of G-equation introduced by Shige Peng (2006, [63]).
The third chapter is about the Pareto optimal allocation of Knightian uncertainty in a single period discrete model.
Maxmin expected utility by Gilboa and Schmeidler is also
adopted to deal with ambiguity of two agents. If two agents have the same belief on ambiguity in a complete market, ambiguity does not seem to be involved in their decisions. But if their beliefs are differerent, ambiguity might play some roles in their decision. If the market is not complete, the two agents could decide according to their beliefs even though they share the same belief on the common state.

Progress toward Quantitative Design Principles of Multicellular Systems
Living systems, particularly multicellular systems, often seem hopelessly complex. But recent studies have suggested that, beneath this complexity, there may be unifying quantitative principles that are only now starting to unravel. All cells interact with their environments and with other cells. Communication among cells is a primary means for cells to interact with each other. The complexity of these multicellular systems, due to the large numbers of cells and the diversity of intracellular and intercellular interactions, makes understanding multicellular systems a daunting task. To overcome this challenge, we will likely need judicious simplifications and conceptual frameworks, which can reveal design principles that are shared among diverse multicellular systems. Here we review some recent progress toward developing such frameworks.Accepted Author ManuscriptOLD BN/Hyun Youk La
