Multimode Heterodyne Detection for Ultrafast Investigation of Quantum Materials
Ultrafast spectroscopy techniques, which employ ultrashort laser pulses, are a formidable tool to investigate the fundamental mechanisms in complex materials at their typical femtosecond timescale. Improving these methodologies is crucial to extract more information from the experiments and reveal new and deeper insights about the examined samples. In this doctoral thesis, we develop a novel experimental methodology to perform ultrafast optical pump&probe studies of samples out of equilibrium. We design and commission Time-resolved Multimode Heterodyne Detection and we employ it to investigate light-matter interactions in transparent quartz and complex materials such as the transition metal antiferromagnet TiOCl and the cuprate superconductor YBCO. We focus, in particular, in the study of coherent vibrational excitations.
The pump&probe approach consists in driving the sample under examination out of equilibrium with an intense pulse, the pump, and measure at a controlled delay the scattered light of a second pulse, the probe. The goal of the developed heterodyne technique is to maximize the amount of information which can be extracted from the experiment. Indeed, while the standard approach consists in measuring the average intensity of the probe pulse, the presented method allows for the full reconstruction of the quantum state of ultrashort pulses and in turn explores new multimode photon observables which are usually neglected in time-domain experiments. Precisely, thanks to heterodyne interferential amplification and single-pulse detection, we gain sensitivity to amplitude, phase and to the statistical distribution of the quadrature of each spectral component of the multimode probe field.
We report that we are able to discriminate the quantum limited multimode statistics of the probe pulse and disentangle the amplitude and phase responses in the ultrafast dynamics of the examined samples. We show that amplitude and phase dynamics are in general different and carry distinct information about the interaction processes
A Florentine family in crisis: the Strozzi in the fifteenth century.
PhDIn 1434 the Strozzi lineage had held a leading position in
Florentine society and government for at least one hundred and fifty
years, and was one of the largest and wealthiest of the city's
patrician lineages. The records of the catasto of 1427 and of the
scrutiny of 1433 are used to give a profile of the dominant social,
economic and political position of the Strozzi before the advent of
Medicean dominance. Their record of electoral success, and the
political and cultural leadership of influential and respected men
such as Palla di Nofri and Matteo di Simone, with other factors, put
the Strozzi amongst the greatest enemies of the victorious Medicean
regime of late 1434. The effects of political opposition and exile
on the lineage are examined both directly, through records of office-holding,
and indirectly through such indicators as marriage alliances
and household wealth. The two most prominent lines of the Strozzi
were exiled after 1434. Palla di Nofri's life and preoccupations in
his Paduan exile are examined, together with the lives of his sons;
none of these Strozzi ever returned to Florence, pursued as they were
by the enmity of the Medicean regime. The very different careers of
Filippo di Matteo and his brother Lorenzo are also examined: how they
succeeded in founding a lucrative bank in Naples, and in returning to
Florence to 'rebuild' (rifare) the position of the Strozzi lineage
there. The final decades of the century saw the Strozzi in an
economically more secure position, due substantially to the efforts
of Filippo. Except for a very small number of its members admitted
into the regime, most of the lineage is here shown to have remained
excluded from significant political office until after the fall of
the Medici regime in 1494
Quantum model for Impulsive Stimulated Raman Scattering
The interaction between ultrashort light pulses and non-absorbing materials is dominated by impulsive stimulated Raman scattering (ISRS). The description of ISRS in the context of pump&probe experiments is based on effective classical models describing the interaction between the phonon and pulsed electromagnetic fields. Here wereport a theoretical description ofISRSwhere we do not make any semi-classical approximation and we treat both photonic and phononic degrees of freedom at the quantum level. The results of the quantum model are compared with semiclassical results and validated by means of spectrally resolved pump&probe measurements on α-quartz

ITALIANO. A short filmic example from the AMC's award-winning series Mad Men in which the sensorial and emotional relationship between the spectator and a moving body, i.e., a dancing body, is explicitly put into play. The essay wants to deal with the so called naturalization of phenomenology and of the living body, trained by the cognitive sciences reading the visuality. The author shows the relationship between the so called ‘embodied Simulation’ and a symbolic and iconographic deep memory of the pictures, and he gives an in-depth attention to the polarity between projections and introjections, activity and passivity of the spectator’s body during the empathic experience of the moving pictures
Ultrafast pump-probe phase-randomized tomography
Measuring fluctuations in matter’s low-energy excitations is the key to unveiling the nature of the non-equilibrium response of materials. A promising outlook in this respect is offered by spectroscopic methods that address matter fluctuations by exploiting the statistical nature of light-matter interactions with weak few-photon probes. Here we report the first implementation of ultrafast phase randomized tomography, combining pump-probe experiments with quantum optical state tomography, to measure the ultrafast non-equilibrium dynamics in complex materials. Our approach utilizes a time-resolved multimode heterodyne detection scheme with phase-randomized coherent ultrashort laser pulses, overcoming the limitations of phase-stable configurations and enabling a robust reconstruction of the statistical distribution of phase-averaged optical observables. This methodology is validated by measuring the coherent phonon response in α-quartz. By tracking the dynamics of the shot-noise limited photon number distribution of few-photon probes with ultrafast resolution, our results set an upper limit to the non-classical features of phononic state in α-quartz and provide a pathway to access non-equilibrium quantum fluctuations in more complex quantum materials
Multiple political geographies
This chapter delves into the multifaceted realm of political geography within the context of the journal Political Geography. The author, who has held various editorial positions within the journal, navigates the intricate terrain of diversity and inclusion, exploring the challenges posed by linguistic and cultural biases inherent in academic publishing. The chapter critically examines efforts to mitigate barriers and broaden the scope of political geography, questioning the adequacy of current approaches. Through a reflective analysis, the author elucidates the complex dynamics of political geography as a subdiscipline, shedding light on both the impediments and possibilities it offers to researchers and students
