    Time-greedy employment relationships. Four studies on the time claims of post-Fordist work

    Recent case studies consistently show that employees in contemporary work structures (often referred to as post-Fordist work designs) spend longer hours at work than in more traditional workplaces. This study investigates the association of post-Fordist work with working unpaid overtime and over-employment, using a multi-firm survey in the Netherlands. We test a range of explanations of why people would agree to work overtime for no pay. We also examine how and under what conditions working overtime harms the well-being of employees. For example, are the possible negative effects of working overtime just as severe for people who enjoy their work? These research questions are examined with the Time Competition Survey. The data were collected by means of a multi-stage sample of 1114 Dutch employees within 89 function groups in 30 work organizations in the Netherlands.     Stratification research has so far almost exclusively focused on the achieved level of education and its impact on labour market careers. However, public opinion, government policies as well as research in the area of transition from school to work all suggest that the subject matters in addition to educational level. Furthermore, both the human capital and the screenings theory imply, albeit for different reasons, that the subject has an impact on labour market careers. With these reasons in mind, the authors designed three alternative measures of education, all including level as well as subject. To find out whether the new measures are indeed an alternative for the commonly used measure, they are included in a traditional status attainment model and put to the test using two different data-sets. The results do not support the hypothesis. There are no indications that subjects have an impact on labour market careers in a systematic timid interpretable way. In ons land woedt al jaren de discussie over de oorzaken van de flexibiliseringsexplosie die we sinds de eeuwwisseling op de arbeidsmarkt waarnemen. Volgens sommigen is deze de weerspiegeling van een fundamentele verandering in de spelregels van het economisch bedrijf. Globalisering, informatisering en nieuwe productieconcepten leiden tot een sterke behoefte aan flexibiliteit, waardoor het vaste contract tot een twintigste-eeuws verschijnsel is gereduceerd. Anderen beschouwen de flexibilisering als een uitdrukking van individualisering en emancipatie van werknemers, die zich ontrukken aan de knellende banden van vaste verbintenissen en collectiviteiten.     This thesis sheds light on occupational careers in the Dutch labour market. Although there have been previous studies about the careers of specific occupational groups, not many have investigated careers right across the labour market. This lacuna is due to a lack of mobility data that has existed for many years. Among other things, this situation has led to the curious fact that occupational mobility has been discussed very little or not at all in the conventional textbooks of labour economics, while from a theoretical point of view this mobility is nevertheless considered to be one of the major market clearing mechanisms.     Job (in)security and workers’ training decisions:A framing approach

    Context: In this study, we attempt to contribute to the scarce evidence about the relationship between perceived labour market insecurity and worker training investments. Drawing on existing research into framing in decision-making, we investigate whether framing the labour market as insecure increases the willingness of workers to invest in training. We also investigate whether this effect is larger when training contract terms are favourable, such as when training is done mostly in an employer's time, or when no payback clause is included. Approach: Data are gathered through a vignette-study under a sample of senior Dutch students, with experimental manipulation of frames. Respondents are given a questionnaire in which they are asked to imagine themselves working for a fictitious firm (but presented to them as real). The security/insecurity frames are elicited by randomly stressing either the positive or negative side of a series of events related to the labour market position of people working in this firm. Respondents are then asked to respond to five vignettes, each of these a randomly generated combination of training contract terms. For each vignette, respondents are asked to state whether or not they would be willing to go along with the specified training program under the conditions outlined in that vignette. Data are analysed with multilevel logistic regression. Findings: The willingness to train is not invariably greater under an insecurity frame. Instead, we find a crucial interaction: The willingness to train is greater under an insecurity frame when training-contract terms are favourable (e.g when no payback clause is included), but smaller when training-contract terms are unfavourable. Since the positive and negative effects are approximately equal in size, in a balanced design such as ours they cancel each other out, resulting in a close to zero overall effect for the frame variable. Conclusion: Our results suggest that, when workers are aware of the insecurity in their situation, this only makes them more willing to follow training when the risk of losing their investment is low.</p

    Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed.
