    Real estate landscapes and the historic city : on how looking inside the market

    The real estate capital is one of the most resistant forms of the process through which the social surplus product was consolidated, making possible the phenomenon of cities as a gradual layering of the “traces” of a settled community. The complexity and complementarity between homogeneity of the urban fabrics and heterogeneity of the architectural shapes led to the multiplicity of functions that properties play, encouraging the expectations of the players of its enhancement process: administrations, owners, large and small investors. This paper focuses on the interpretation of the urban pattern of the historic city through the analysis of the housing markets. The research deals with the case study of the town of Syracuse, a multifaceted urban context from several points of view. The formal and functional articulation of this real estate market justifies the use of different, layered and structured analysis tools to identify sub-markets, deepening the relationship between value/price

    The European Green Deal: New Challenges for the Economic Feasibility of Energy Retrofit at District Scale

    The European Green Deal proposes an epochal change in the European society by transforming environmental and climatic problems into opportunities and making sustainable and fair the European Union economic system. Radical changes will also concern urban redevelopment and energy efficiency measures in order to reduce global greenhouse gas emissions. To achieve these objectives, rules and standards, as well as financial resources and assessment tools, are needed to support both urban planning and public decision process. This paper aims to analyze the existing European programs that are applied in some European smart cities, as they constitute a valuable source of information for the development of financial schemes and evaluation tools ad hoc for the Green Deal implementation. Moreover, the analysis of the pilot projects of the ZenN program has made possible to identify some critical issues regarding the economic feasibility of energy retrofit at a district scale, though further studies will be required to respond to the new assessment challenges launched by the Green Deal

    “Houses for One Euro” and the Territory. Some Estimation Issues for the “Geographic Debt” Reduction

    The phenomenon of the “houses for one Euro” is the epitome of the progressive and increasing abandonment of the inland territories in which many small towns are affected by continuous and unstoppable depopulation. This process, mostly affecting the southern and insular Italian regions, have been triggered by the quick industrial development started after the second post-war, led by the northern regions, that deeply and irreversibly modified the anthropography of the whole country until now. The impoverishment of a wide part of the Italian territory, is one of the many issues connected to the social-territorial justice that is the original topic by which appraisal and valuation, that is science of the economic value judgement, differs from other branches of the applied economics. With the prospect of an insight of the case of Calabria, the paper presents: as first some factual basic premises for defining the matters and the sense of the concept of land debt; as second some theoretical and methodological coordinates for reinterpreting “abandonment as a metaphor of being back”

    Facial Uplift: Plastic Surgery, Cosmetics, and the Retailing of Whiteness in the Work of Maria Cristina Mena

    This article analyzes how Mexican American author María Cristina Mena’s short magazine fiction boldly illustrates the emerging U.S. beauty industry as effectively producing whiteness for sale in the neocolonial marketplace. Her representations of Mexican women’s use of cosmetics articulate how the beauty industry both lends structure to and is structured by the idea of race; at the same time, she reminds her audience that the impact of beauty products and services is in large part determined by the political and economic context of the goods themselves. Through the techniques of role reversals, character development and dramatic irony, Mena’s stories portray the U.S. beauty industry as a dynamic trade that exports new forms of whiteness across its southern border. Far from depicting Mexican women as passive consumers in the neocolonial marketplace, however, Mena shows how beauty products and services can be appropriated as limited yet potent acts of resistance.This article was published as Schuller, Kyla.     Imagens de Otto Maria Carpeaux: esboço de biografia

    Tese (doutorado) - Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina, Centro de Filosofia e Ciências Humanas, Programa de Pós-Graduação em História, Florianópolis, 2015.Este esboço de biografia procura citar algumas imagens de Otto Maria Carpeaux: construções biográficas de naturezas múltiplas, elaboradas em contextos, por atores e sob condições igualmente díspares. Está constituído a partir de uma visão crítica da História, o que permite que ?outras imagens?, fragmentárias e não monumentais, também tenham espaço. Em diálogo com o princípio da montagem, este esboço apresenta-se em duas partes. Na primeira, Imagens possíveis, estão citadas as imagens elaboradas em vida e post mortem acerca do austríaco-brasileiro que nasceu em Viena em 1900, se exilou no Brasil em 1939 e morreu no Rio de Janeiro, em 1978. Na segunda, Montagens possíveis, apresentam-se duas possibilidades de exercício biográfico: pela leitura alegórica do documentário O velho e o Novo (Otto Maria Carpeaux), entendido como instrumento de intervenção no contexto ditatorial brasileiro e de uma reelaboração biográfica concernentes às suas experiências europeias; e pelo Caderno de imagens críticas, registro dos encontros em Carpeaux pelo meio de imagens críticas produzidas a partir da cesura do presente.Abstract : This biographical sketch attempts to quote some images of Otto Maria Carpeaux: various types of biographical constructions, carried out in different contexts by disparate authors under conditions just as distinct. It stems from a critical view of history, allowing for ?other images? fragmented and non-monumental ? to share the space.In dialogue with the montage principle, this sketch has two parts. The first, Possible Images, quotes the images produced during and after the life of the Austrian-Brazilian, who was born in Vienna in 1900, went to Brazil in exile in 1939 and died in Rio de Janeiro in 1978. The second part, Possible Montages, presents two possibilities of a biographical exercise: through the allegorical reading of documentary O Velho e o Novo (Otto Maria Carpeaux), understood as an instrument of intervention in the Brazilian dictatorship context and as a biographical retelling of the author?s European experiences; and through my Scrapbook of Critical Images, a record of the encounters in Carpeaux through critical images produced from the caesura of the present

    Una máscara teatral de doble cara preservada en el museo de Lipari (Mesina): estudio y reconstrucción 3d mediante equipo portátil

    [EN] The new tools for 3D survey and modelling (as portable scanners and software packages), often in combination with diagnostics, are nowadays able to provide indispensable elements for the study of archaeological artefacts; their applications to museum’s heritage can be also useful to integrate the traditional graphic documentation and contribute to enhancement and dissemination. This paper shows the benefit of using the aforementioned tools to study the peculiar clay mask No. 11114-E, discovered in 1973 in the Greek necropolis of Lipára, inside tomb No. 1558. The specimen, now exhibited in the Classical Section of the Aeolian Museum, is considered unique both in the Aeolian Islands and in the ancient Greek world, as it is the only one merging two half faces attributable to different characters. This feature, unknown at the time of discovery, has been highlighted in 2018, thanks to a restoration intervention by which a hard concretion layer covering a large portion of the mask surface was removed, bringing to light a smiling young half-face next to an old one with Silenic features. In 2019, the mask was surveyed in situ through a portable and performing laser-scanner arm (the QuantumTM FaroArm by FARO) to produce a high-resolution 3D model useful to enhance the reading of the two halves (not evident enough, due to its state of preservation). The data processing was performed using the Geomagic Wrap software, able to align and merge multiple scans into a single model and to export results in multiple formats, easily shareable and viewable in free software or via the web. Finally, thanks to this method, the successful generation of a digital replica was performed; the resulting replica is useful for dissemination and as a support for the hypothetical reconstruction of the two prototypes taken as models by the craftsman who created the mask.Highlights:A 'mobile laboratory’ consisting of portable equipment has been set up to perform 3D metric surveys on a selection of artefacts preserved at the Museum of Lipari.By means of an ultra-precision laser-scanner arm, a 3D survey on a miniaturistic double-faced mask, belonging to the classical theatrical terracotta, has been performed.A geometrically accurate and realistic 3D final model has been created. This helped the study and reconstruction of the two characters composing the mask.[ES] Las nuevas herramientas para el levantamiento y el modelado en 3D (como son los escáneres portátiles y los paquetes de software), a menudo en combinación con equipos diagnósticos, pueden hoy en día proporcionar elementos indispensables para el estudio de objetos arqueológicos; sus aplicaciones al patrimonio del museo también pueden ser útiles para integrar la documentación gráfica tradicional y contribuir a su mejora y divulgación. Este artículo se refiere al estudio de un hallazgo peculiar procedente de la necrópolis griega de Lipára: la máscara de arcilla nº. 11114-E, descubierta en 1973 en el interior de la tumba nº. 1558 y ahora exhibida en la Sección Clásica del Museo Eólica. El espécimen se considera único, tanto en las Islas Eolias como en el mundo griego antiguo, ya que es la única que fusiona dos mitades atribuibles a diferentes personajes. Esta característica, desconocida en el momento del descubrimiento, se ha destacado en 2018, gracias a la intervención de restauración mediante la cual se ha eliminado una capa dura que cubre gran parte de la superficie de la máscara, sacando a la luz una media cara sonriente y joven, junto a una cara que muestra indicadores de vejez con rasgos selénicos. En 2019, la máscara se levantó in situ con un brazo de escáner láser portátil y funcional (FaroArm QuantumTM de FARO), con el objetivo de generar un modelo 3D de alta resolución útil que mejorara la lectura de las dos mitades (no visible debido a su estado de conservación). El procesamiento de datos se ha llevado a cabo empleando el software Geomagic Wrap capaz de alinear y fusionar múltiples escaneados en un solo modelo y exportarlo en múltiples formatos, fácilmente compartibles y visibles en software libre o vía web.
