    No full text

Safeguarding Bee Health: Insights from a Collaborative Monitoring and Prevention Project Against Pesticide Poisonings

    No full text
In recent decades, bee poisoning due to pesticides and agrochemicals has increased, posing significant challenges to honey bee health and contributing to the so-called “Colony Collapse Disorder” (CCD). Poor knowledge about the level of exposure of bee colonies to pesticides and agrochemicals, whether from the environment or beekeeping management practices, is a major limiting factor in preventing these diseases. Collaboration among different stakeholders, such as beekeeping associations, local veterinary authorities, and researchers, is essential to create monitoring programs that can collect these data and enable the prompt implementation of surveillance and preventive actions to address potential bee colony poisoning incidents caused by these contaminants. The present study describes the results obtained through a collaborative initiative that was implemented for monitoring and preventing pesticide-induced bee poisonings in a territory of northern Italy where the exposure of honey bee colonies to different types of pesticides and agrochemicals may occur. Four sentinel apiaries were selected based on possible sources of pollution throughout the territory. Pollen samples were collected at different times during the years 2021–2022 and analyzed for pesticides using gas and liquid chromatography tandem quadrupole mass spectrometry (GC-MS/MS and LC-MS/MS) techniques. The findings showed the presence of a number of pesticides, such as pyrethroids, permethrin, cypermethrin, amitraz, and pendimethalin, at varying concentrations. Acute bee mortality was observed in a field case related to pyrethroid exposure in 2022, in an urban area. These results confirm the need for timely interventions, improved sampling methods, and continuous monitoring to safeguard bee populations. Collaboration with local beekeepers and public authorities is thus essential in addressing pesticide use and bee health challenges, fostering efficient communication and training efforts to support sustainable beekeeping

The author comes to the following conclusions: 1st It is necessary to admit amongst the cases of functional sterility that certain number of them are recognized as a cause the existence of repeated monophasic cycle. The sterility in these cases are produced by the abscende of fertile ovum, in each cycle. 2nd The fact that the woman has periodic genital h emorrhages with all the apparent aspect of true menstruation does not authorize to reject the existence of this anomaly. 3rd Its diagnosis is exclusively by histological method by gathering material during the preceding days of menstruation.Facultad de Ciencias Médica

Moretto and Romanino: religious painting in Brescia 1510-1550: identity in the shadow of La serenissima

    No full text
This thesis examines several works of religious content produced by the Brescian painters Gerolamo Romano, 11 Romanino (148487-15'59) and Alessandro Bonvicino, 11 Moretto (1498-1554), produced for patrons and locations in Brescia between 15 10 and 1550. This enquiry has drawn on little used historical material in order to integrate the discussion of the images into a wider social and historical context. The key aim of this study is to establish how Romanino and Moretto defined a Brescian identity in art. This will be argued by using two different approaches in order to examine the existence, and the manifestations, of such a local identity One approach taken in this study is to look at groups of corporate patrons and to consider the works executed for them in terms of similarities of content. Chapters 2 and 3 in turn consider the works executed by Romanino and Moretto for the Congregations of Santa Giustina of Padua, and of San Giorgio in Alga. The second approach adopted for the purposes of examination of strategies for the establishment of a Brescian visual identity employed in this study is to focus on representations of the Eucharist. It will be shown that Moretto developed a new visual motif of the 'Eucharistic Christ' in response to the growing popularity of the Forty Hours devotion in Brescia

Occurrence of Glyphosate and Other Polar Pesticides in Honey from Lombardy and Emilia-Romagna Regions in Italy: Three-Year Monitoring Results

    No full text
Intensive agricultural practices, such as pesticides use, may negatively affect bee health and hive products. Glyphosate is one of the most widely used polar pesticides applied in crops for weed control. In this study, honey samples, collected from beekeeping farms located in the Lombardy and Emilia-Romagna regions in Italy in the framework of regional monitoring plans activated from 2020 to 2022, were analyzed for the presence of residues of polar pesticides. The analytical method based on ion chromatography coupled to high-resolution mass spectrometry was applied to quantify glyphosate, glufosinate, ethephon, fosetyl aluminum, and their related metabolites. Residues of glyphosate were detected in around 28% of analyzed honey samples. Observations on the distribution of the honey-production-site locations suggest that honey samples originating from the provinces within the Lombardy region, where the agricultural sector is highly developed, were more affected by glyphosate contamination than the samples collected from the areas with low agricultural activity, where no glyphosate residues were detected over the three years of the monitoring program

"(...) any landscape is composed not only for what it is in the front of our eyes, but also for what it is hidden in our mind". Grounded in this affirmation of Meinig (2002:35), in the line of the Humanistic Geography that was developed this work. With the occupation of the plainest areas of the Joinville (SC) city, the mounts Iririú and the Boa Vista, had been in part preserved in its natural vegetation. In the first, is placed the Conservation Unit studied, called Parque Municipal Morro do Finder. The creation of the park and the different aspects and symbolisms that constitute the meaning of this landscape for the three interviewed groups, wichwere managers, visitors and local inhabitants had been analyzed. From the perceptions, of the values and feelings, the different speeches about to this protected natural landscape in urban area, had been categorized, showing relative values to this as: field of comment / contemplation, space of rest, coziness and memory, space of anoying, fear and restriction, and, finally, space of management and politics performance. Thus, by means of the analysis in the Parque Municipal Morro do Finder reaffirmed this importance in the municipal and regional context, and also the necessity of a more effective management on the basis, in a plan of adjusted handling, elaborated with the participation of all the social actors involved

Predictors of adverse cardiac events of coronary myocardial bridging diagnosed with computed tomography angiography

    No full text
Aims: Myocardial bridging (MB) is a frequent congenital anomaly of the epicardial coronary arteries commonly considered a benign condition. However, in some cases a complex interplay between anatomical, clinical and physiology factors may lead to adverse events, including sudden cardiac death. Coronary CT angiography (CCTA) emerged as the gold standard noninvasive imaging technique for the evaluation of MB. Aim of the study was to evaluate MB prevalence and anatomical features in a large population of patients who underwent CCTA for suspected CAD and to identify potential anatomical and clinical predictors of adverse cardiac events at long-term follow-up. Methods and results: Two-hundred and six patients (mean age 60.3 ± 11.8 years, 128 male) with MB diagnosed at CCTA were considered. A long MB was defined as ≥25 mm of overlying myocardium, whereas a deep MB as ≥2 mm of overlying myocardium. The study endpoint was the sum of the following adverse events: cardiac death, bridge-related acute coronary syndrome, hospitalization for angina or bridge-related ventricular arrhythmias and MB surgical treatment. Of the 206 patients enrolled in the study, 9 were lost to follow-up, whereas 197 (95.6%) had complete follow-up (mean 7.01 ± 3.0 years) and formed the analytic population. Nineteen bridge-related events occurred in 18 patients (acute coronary syndrome in 7, MB surgical treatment in 2 and hospitalization for bridge-related events in 10). Typical angina at the time of diagnosis and long MB resulted as significant independent predictors of adverse outcome. Conclusions: Typical angina and MB length ≥ 25 mm were independent predictors of cardiac events

Tocilizumab for patients with COVID-19 pneumonia. The single-arm TOCIVID-19 prospective trial

    No full text
BackgroundTocilizumab blocks pro-inflammatory activity of interleukin-6 (IL-6), involved in pathogenesis of pneumonia the most frequent cause of death in COVID-19 patients.MethodsA multicenter, single-arm, hypothesis-driven trial was planned, according to a phase 2 design, to study the effect of tocilizumab on lethality rates at 14 and 30 days (co-primary endpoints, a priori expected rates being 20 and 35%, respectively). A further prospective cohort of patients, consecutively enrolled after the first cohort was accomplished, was used as a secondary validation dataset. The two cohorts were evaluated jointly in an exploratory multivariable logistic regression model to assess prognostic variables on survival.ResultsIn the primary intention-to-treat (ITT) phase 2 population, 180/301 (59.8%) subjects received tocilizumab, and 67 deaths were observed overall. Lethality rates were equal to 18.4% (97.5% CI: 13.6-24.0, P=0.52) and 22.4% (97.5% CI: 17.2-28.3, P<0.001) at 14 and 30 days, respectively. Lethality rates were lower in the validation dataset, that included 920 patients. No signal of specific drug toxicity was reported. In the exploratory multivariable logistic regression analysis, older age and lower PaO2/FiO2 ratio negatively affected survival, while the concurrent use of steroids was associated with greater survival. A statistically significant interaction was found between tocilizumab and respiratory support, suggesting that tocilizumab might be more effective in patients not requiring mechanical respiratory support at baseline.ConclusionsTocilizumab reduced lethality rate at 30 days compared with null hypothesis, without significant toxicity. Possibly, this effect could be limited to patients not requiring mechanical respiratory support at baseline.Registration EudraCT (2020-001110-38); clinicaltrials.gov (NCT04317092)
