Greater fatigability in knee-flexors vs. knee-extensors after a standardized fatiguing protoco
No full textThe present study aimed to investigate the effects of a standardized fatiguing protocol on central and peripheral fatigue in knee-flexors and knee-extensors. Thirteen healthy men (age: 23 ± 3 years; height: 1.78 ± 0.09 m; body-mass: 73.6 ± 9.2 kg) volunteered for the present study. Maximal voluntary contraction (MVC), Electromyography (EMG) activity, voluntary activation level (VAL) as an index of central fatigue and twitch potentiation as an index of peripheral fatigue were measured before and after the fatiguing protocol. The fatiguing protocol consisted of a 0.6 duty-cycle to exhaustion (6 s isometric contraction, 4 s recovery) at 70% MVC. After the fatiguing protocol, MVC decreased in both (Effect-size (ES) = 1.14) and knee-extensors (ES = 1.14), and EMG activity increased in both knee-flexors (ES = 2.33) and knee-extensors (ES = 1.54). Decreases in VAL occurred in knee-flexors (ES = 0.92) but not in knee-extensors (ES = 0.04). Decreases in potentiation occurred in both knee-flexors (ES = 0.84) and knee-extensors (ES = 0.58). The greater central occurrence of fatigue in knee-flexors than in knee-extensors may depend on the different muscle morphology and coupled with a greater tolerance to fatigue in knee-extensors. The present data add further insight to the complicated knee-flexors-to-knee-extensors strength relationship and the mechanisms behind the different occurrence of fatigue
Elastic band exercise induces greater neuromuscular fatigue than phasic isometric contractions
No full textThis study investigated the neuromuscular fatigue following an elastic band exercise (EB) of the plantar flexors, compared to an intermittent phasic isometric exercise (ISO). Eleven young healthy males (age: 24.2 ± 3.7) took part in the study, consisting of one experimental session involving two 5-min fatiguing protocols separated by 20 min rest and performed randomly. Both exercises were performed at maximal motor output of the plantar flexor muscles, EMG being used as a feedback signal. Neuromuscular fatigue was assessed through changes in maximal voluntary contraction (MVC) and in evoked responses of soleus and gastrocnemii muscles to posterior tibial nerve stimulation (H-reflex, M-wave, V-wave). Both conditions induced significant decrease in MVC force, but to a greater extent after EB (−20.0 ± 5.1%, P < 0.001) than after ISO (−12.3 ± 4.6%, P = 0.037). While no effect was observed in M-wave amplitude after both exercises, EB resulted in greater decrease of normalized H-reflexes compared to isometric condition. Normalized V-wave significantly decreased only after EB. As a conclusion, the greater fatigability found after EB as compared to ISO was underlain by muscular as well as nervous factors. This higher impact was attributed to the dynamic nature of elastic band exercise as compared to isometric contractions

To ease the development burden many developers faced, web application frameworks were created. Such frameworks come with learning curves though, and learning one can take time away from an already busy schedule.
This thesis will attempt to introduce web developers to popular development frameworks using version three of a beginner friendly framework called CodeIgniter. The thesis explores the components of the framework as well as the model-view-controller (MVC) object oriented architectural design pattern it is based upon. To demonstrate the framework in action, a prototype application was created along with development documentation. At the end of the thesis the author shares the experience of learning CodeIgniter and the value of using an MVC web application framework when developing a modern, data intensive web application

No full textabstract: Video encoding for multimedia services over communication networks has significantly advanced in recent years with the development of the highly efficient and flexible H.264/AVC video coding standard and its SVC extension. The emerging H.265/HEVC video coding standard as well as 3D video coding further advance video coding for multimedia communications. This paper first gives an overview of these new video coding standards and then examines their implications for multimedia communications by studying the traffic characteristics of long videos encoded with the new coding standards. We review video coding advances from MPEG-2 and MPEG-4 Part 2 to H.264/AVC and its SVC and MVC extensions as well as H.265/HEVC. For single-layer (nonscalable) video, we compare H.265/HEVC and H.264/AVC in terms of video traffic and statistical multiplexing characteristics. Our study is the first to examine the H.265/HEVC traffic variability for long videos. Executives at any corporation, large or small, would probably agree that they need to know everything and anything at the drop of a hat. As software has become more prominent in the business world so has the demand for an ever faster representation of business data. While traditional desktop applications have been used for decades to record, store, and display data, they do have their limitations. One such limitation being location—that is, they reside on a desktop. Remote access services have alleviated some of the pain that comes from location but there is still a need for faster access to data. Thankfully, the internet offers itself as ideal platform for fast, reliable, data retrieval. An ERP (Enterprise Resource Planning) application manages several departments of a business. Most sophisticated applications handle accounting, marketing, ordering, invoicing, etc. plus other business operations processes. One such ERP is Evosus, a system designed for the pool industry. While Evosus is an effective ERP system, it does suffer from the same limits that any traditional desktop application has—namely fast remote access. Evosus is an application that stores all of its data in a Microsoft SQL Server Database. MSSQL Server is known for being flexible, secure, and easy to use. The use of MSSQL Server alone allows Evosus to be more flexible than many competitors. With a few simple programming commands, all of the data stored in the Evosus database can be effectively displayed in web format. Therefore, the limitations brought on by location no longer exist. Using the Microsoft product stack, a web application has been developed to display Evosus data on the web. ASP.NET MVC is used to help with the Separation of Concerns (SoC) that accompanies all web development.
